An estimated 210,000 gallons of oil leaked from the Keystone Pipeline in Marshall County, South Dakota, according to the pipeline's operator, TransCanada. Crews shut down the pipeline and officials are investigating the cause of the leak. Equipment is staged to work on containing and fixing the leak.
As long as the fossil fuel lobby has a free hand in Washington D.C. and the state capitols the potential for renewable energy. such as solar power, will never reach its full potential.
The fossil fuel lobby's all-out push for fracking will permanently destroy our nation's landscape and poison our water FOREVER. It will be akin to a toxic nuclear effect with
out the radiation.

Surface Analysis Laboratory (SEM)

The Surface Analysis Laboratory is equipped to assist researchers in analyzing materials on a microscale in simulated environments, which helps to discover properties that can affect processing at the macroscale. The laboratory houses X-ray diffraction equipment, electron microscopes, a metallographic laboratory, and a complete analytical chemistry laboratory. The facility enables scientists to conduct wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. Thermal analysis can be performed to determine thermophysical properties of materials, such as decomposition temperatures and solidification temperatures. The laboratory also has instrumentation to determine which elements and compounds are present and their concentrations in solids, powders, and liquids to verify that alloys contain the correct balance of elements and compounds, helping keep these alloys in line with industry demands

NETL utilizes its melt lab facilities to create controlled chemistry alloys for further evaluation in our other facilities. Alloys are initially conceived and evaluated using computational thermodynamics. Once designed, the alloys are formulated from industrial purity remelt stocks. Melt operations include non-consumable vacuum arc remelting (VAR) melting up to a few pounds, consumable VAR and electro-slag remelting (ESR) melting up to 440 lbs, and vacuum induction melting (VIM) up to 50lb in this lab (up to 300# in another). Once melted, ingots are sampled for chemistry. Heats that are destined for deformation processing are given a computationally optimized homogenization heat treatment and machined prior to hot working.
Activists gather for a direct action camp designed to train the growing movement in Virginia against the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipelines. The objective is to teach participants ways to use our bodies to protect our communities, our lands, and our climate from powerful fossil fuel interests who want to carve up these beautiful mountains for profit.

The second California based Fire Drill Friday takes place in the District 15 area of Los Angeles. The area is home to the massive oil and gas fields that are quite literally poisoning and killing people. Speakers include: Gloria Arellanes, a member of the Gabrieleno/Tongva Tribe; Jocelyn Moguel, a strong young leader born and raised in Wilmington, CA.; Doctor Saba Malik, a second year family medicine resident at Harbor UCLA Medical Center; Jovan Houston, an aviation service worker at Los Angeles International Airport and rank and file leader SEIU United Service Workers West; Magali Sanchez-Hall is a long-time resident of Wilmington and an environmental justice activist working alongside environmental justice organizations.
Helping with speaker introductions are: Billie Lee; Lana Parrilla; Sam Waterston; Josh Pence; Rosanna Arquette; Diane Lane; Saffron Burrows; and Lily Tomlin .
On May 31st New Yorkers from across the city are going to be descending on the Clean Energy Standard hearing in lower Manhattan to help spark a renewable energy revolution in the Empire State. We need you there with us for our climate, our economy, and the city we love. This is the big one.

Activists with Greenpeace USA join the picket line led by United Steelworkers (USW) Local 5 union members, expanding it from land into the San Francisco Bay. Boats set up the water picket line near the Chevron facility. Nearly 500 workers from Chevronճ Richmond refinery have been on strike for over a month as they fight for a new labor contract from Chevronճ leadership.
Greenpeace USA used a mobile advertising truck to get the message to Congress to stop West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin and New York Senator Chuck Schumer's Dirty Deal that would fast track oil, gas, and coal projects. The deal could sacrifice lives and the health of communities, silence voices by gutting environmental reviews and public comment, and sabotage the chance for a livable future.
