I'll be forwarding this Iona electric shoe polisher to Ash. Apparently this is what was used to make the gadget wotsisname is holding in Ghostbusters. It's a nice kit, and one of the tins of shoe polish isn't even used. Ash is considering just taking a mold of this instead of defiling it.

Monday, 9th February 1981.
Sometime in the late 1970's, while on leave from the sea, I was in contact with a young-ish Dutchman, Andre de Groot, who owned a freight forwarding/haulage business in Felixstowe, England.
In the following years I delivered several imported cars for him, nothing particularly noteworthy, usually belonging to British ex-pats who had worked abroad, and were shipping their tax free cars back to the UK.
Then, one day a Mk.1 Range Rover with a 4 door conversion (remember, the early examples were 2 doors only) turned up for delivery, I now forget to where.
Soon afterwards, another Range Rover appeared - perhaps the most unusual vehicle that I have ever driven - a new, privately owned example, with a six wheel & four door conversion, carried out by Swiss specialist Peter Monteverdi - who took the Mark 1 Range Rover - at that time only a two door - and subtly changed everything. Land Rover supplied two door Mark 1’s in alpine white, with an extra set of doors, Monteverdi unbolted and totally re-engineered the body & doors, applied metallic paint, completely stripped out the workaday interior, replacing with the best materials possible, from buttery tanned leather through to windows from St Gobain.
The car was to be delivered to the Aston Martin showroom in Knightsbridge.
I don't believe I ever knew who the actual customer was, but I suspect someone from an oil-soaked country 😉.
Anyway, I delivered it without fuss, and at the showroom, I asked a salesman if, before departing, I could mooch around for half an hour to soak up the rich vibes of the Aston Martins on display, to which he agreed.
I guessed that I would never again be in an Aston Martin showroom (my prophesy is, so far, accurate).
After a good while the salesman approached me with an apology and a £10 pound note. (worth about £40 today.)
I took the tip and the hint, however, I wished that I had made it clear to the salesman that:
a) I wasn't hanging round for a tip.
b) that I was happy just to be in close proximity to these iconic British cars &
c) that I would have stayed there until closing time, given half a chance!
It was a win-win day, as now, some 44 years later, I have re-discovered these brochures from that showroom!
I think these brochures are worth a few £'s today.

i have spoken to many people who have, like myself, felt that time is speeding up in some
sort of unexplanable way. it seems as if the years are flying by and not just metaphorically.
along with this fast forwarding, there seems to be another trend. a dire trend...
it seems like just about everyone i know is going through some major upheaval
within their lives, myself included. now i know what you're thinking, you're thinking
'whose life hasn't been full of craziness and tragedy and guilt and remorse? who hasn't
dealt with suffering and feelings of failure?'
well...everyone has. i know this. the thing about this year is just how many of us are
going through major (not minor) MAJOR *salute* changes. it seems like more people
are at the end of their metaphorical ropes than ever before. it's not talked about much
in the media, but it's happening. some call it a shift, others take just take out the 'f'.
- the only variable is the speed of
each life altering upheaval/indcident. some of us are upheaving at mach 5, while others of us are upheaving at perhaps a steady 60mph, while others of us are upheaving at a confusing 4mph walking pace...just enough to increase our heartrates, but not enough to really get us anywhere
quickly.
it's that last group of us that suffers the most though, because our upheave is long and drawn out.
when everything in your life goes wrong at once, at least there is a certain sense of calm afterwards - that sort of 'what the hell else could go wrong?' relief. when you hit rock bottom, the only way to go is up, right? the 60mph guys, well, at least they're actually going someplace at a relatively decent speed even if it's scary uncharted territory. they're speeding right up to it and will get there eventually and then can join the mach 5 guys in looking upwards.
those of us walking get shafted. mostly because it feels like we've been walking forever, and we start to favor one leg over the other, and we can hear a little crick in our knee that wasn't there before, and eventually we start to limp along the route - watching the mach 5 guys zip past us, crashing in the far distance with tiny but bright flashy blur. still we amble on. next come by the 60mphers who we look to for some kind of sign, signal, anything
maybe they know something we don't know, maybe they have a map?. because that's the hardest part of it, isn't it? not knowing where exactly the crashpoint is...
knowing that some inevitable crisis is hiding out there somewhere, just waiting for you - only it's not your job to find it. nope. your job is to plod on, limping, and eventually crawling - exhausted, spent, and drained.
your job is to live in constant fear of that moment when everything burns down to the ground.
but the thing about living in fear is that it paralyzes you. it makes you afraid of choices,
and instead of reaching your upheaval point, your crisis point, your eventual life altering point,
you just keep ambling along the same route...
and that's the real killer.
the universe is tricksy though.
it always gives you more of what you purposefully avoid.
if you don't decide, it will create an event in your life that decides for you.
this is a fact.
it is also a great kindness.
/having said all that, i read an article today about the rash of suicides in europe due to the terrible economic crisis. 'rash' is a rather pleasant way of describing it.
it's actually an epidemic. and the interesting thing about it is that more and more of these suicides aren't taking place in private. these people (mostly men) are hanging and shooting themselves in public places. outside banks, on bridges, outside churches...
it really makes one wonder at the cost of it all.
at what point do numbers take precedence over humanity?
what is it all worth in the end?
