With a bright red nose, Pelican Cargo Boeing 707 G-BEVN is caught taxiing out at London - Gatwick in 1981.

 

This aircraft, a -321C, was new to Panam and then went to work for Dan-Air. Unusually, after use with Pelican it saw service with two 'legacy' carriers, namely Turkish Airlines and Aerolineas Argentinas. It was scrapped in 1994.

 

Pelican had this aircraft for three years and it seems they stopped operating as an airline later in 1981, but are still a going concern as a freight forwarding company, albeit under Icelandic ownership.

With the outbreak of World War I, Mrs. B. M. Schmitt sold the pub to Belgian Victor Berlemont, who had moved to London in 1900. The bill of sale is posted on a wall at The French still today. e was succeeded by his son Gaston Berlemont, who was born in the pub in 1914, and worked there until his retirement in 1989.

 

After the fall of France in World War II, General Charles de Gaulle escaped to London where he formed the Free French Forces. His speech rallying the French people, "À tous les Français" is said to have been written in the pub.

 

The French House was and is popular with artists and writers. Brendan Behan wrote large portions of The Quare Fellow there, and Dylan Thomas once left the manuscript of Under Milk Wood under his chair. Other regulars over the years include Francis Bacon, Daniel Farson, Lucian Freud, Augustus John, Malcolm Lowry, Michael "Atters" Attree, Calum, Rosie and John Mortimer.

 

The name was changed to "The French House" after the fire at York Minster in 1984. Contributions toward the restoration fund started arriving at the pub. Upon forwarding them, Gaston Berlemont found that the cathedral had been receiving deliveries of claret intended for him.

Approaching Shirland Road Bridge on the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

 

Sheffield is on the River Don, but the upper reaches of the river were not navigable. In medieval times, the goods from Sheffield had to be transported overland to the nearest inland port - Bawtry on the River Idle. Later, the lower reaches of the Don were made navigable, but boats could still not reach Sheffield. Proposals to link Sheffield to the navigable Don at Tinsley (and so to the Rivers Ouse and Trent, and to the Humber and the North Sea) were made as early as 1697, but these came to nothing.

 

In 1815, the Sheffield Canal Company was formed by Act of Parliament in order to construct a canal.

 

The surveyors' recommended route was to leave the River Don at Jordan's Lock, opposite where the "Holmes Cut" of the Don Navigation joins the river and follow the north side of the Don Valley to a basin "in or near Savile Street". When this was put forward the Duke of Norfolk's estate noted that it would preclude coal from their collieries at Tinsley Park and Manor reaching the canal and as the Duke was the largest financial backer of the project an alternative should be sought more favourable to their cause.

 

The alternative route was on the south side of the Don Valley, to terminate at a basin on the site of the former orchards of Sheffield Castle. This would require two series of locks, one, at Tinsley to raise the level from the river and a second, at Carbrook, to gain the necessary height for a level flow into the city centre. It was suggested that a short branch, known as "The Greenland Arm" should be built to afford access to Tinsley Park Collieries. Although the longer and more expensive option, the Duke's support meant that this route was the one for which parliamentary approval was sought.

 

The Act of Parliament was passed on 7 June 1815 with 182 subscribers, the Duke of Norfolk (2,000) and the Earl Fitzwilliam (1,000) being the largest contributors. The civil engineer William Chapman had prepared the plans, and he became the Engineer for the project, which would cost £76,000. The foundation stone of the canal basin was laid by Hugh Parker of Woodthorpe Hall on 16 June 1816 and all was ready for opening less than three years later.

 

By 1840 the city could boast a service second to none, services to Greasbrough ran in connection with the twice weekly "fly-boat", which itself ran in connection with the Hull and London steamers. Richard Preston & Company offered a "fly-boat" service to Thorne for onward transshipment, whilst the London and Sheffield Union Company offered a service "without transshipment" to the capital. Other services ran to Gainsborough (fortnightly) and Leeds (every three weeks). Only five years on and the first major change came about when William Cobby offered water transport from London to Hull and Selby with onward forwarding to Sheffield by rail.

 

In 1846 there was a move by the long titled Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Wakefield, Hull and Goole Railway to acquire the Sheffield Canal Company and provide itself with a city terminus. Before this deal could be completed the Sheffield and Lincolnshire Junction Railway came in with an offer which was accepted. The S.& L.J.R. became part of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway and on 22 July 1848 they became the owners of the canal. The canal was transferred to the River Dun Navigation Company by an Act of 28 July 1849 where it was joined by the Stainforth and Keadby Canal and the Dearne and Dove Canal. After fusion with the South Yorkshire, Doncaster and Goole Railway it became the South Yorkshire Railway and River Dun Navigation Company. The South Yorkshire Railway passed to the M.S.& L.R. and they again became the canal's owners.

 

In 1895 the Sheffield Canal was amalgamated with the River Don Navigation and the Stainforth & Keadby canal to form the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation. The following year the facilities at Sheffield were modernised and a new warehouse built straddling the basin.

 

On Sunday 5/1/2025, 4116s (Aurizon shuttle) is seen approaching Heaslip road, Direk (Adelaide) with G533 hauling a solo AQDY4269, which was removed from 6DA2 at Two Wells for forwarding to Gillman.

Hulls of Rotherham Bound Class37 No. 37896 along with Boothes of Rotherham bound Class 37 No 37684 sit on the back of Allely's Trailers on the 28th December 2009 in a layby on the A441 north of Redditch awaiting forwarding to their respective destination. Union Pacific's "Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad" Heritage Unit leads an empty molten sulfur train through the community of Rosedale, LA on UP's Livonia Subdivision.

 

The train began in Mulberry, FL as CSX K877. The train was interchanged to UP in New Orleans, LA for further forwarding to a location around Tyler, TX as UP Train OXRTY.

The 1970 Hemi Cuda was a huge release in the history of muscle cars, but there is only one factory-built drag-car Hemi Cuda with a VIN that was produced for the Sox & Martin team: this one. By 1970, NHRA was forwarding acid-dipped bodies to its race teams for conversion. Not as well remembered is that the rules still required enough OEM trim that many teams also received a Street Hemi E-body to complete that conversion. This car likely exists because it was rebuilt into a test and clinic car by Ronnie Sox and Buddy Martin. It served as a test bed and was then dressed up to actively compete in AHRA’s GT-1 class and Super Stock class, where team driver Herb McCandless and Ronnie Sox successfully took it to a World Championship in AHRA, also winning in several GT-1 PSS wins. Now considered the only professional-level drag-racing E-body Hemi Cuda with a factory Hemi VIN tag, this car is equipped with a 426 Hemi V-8 engine that hosts a rare Chrysler prototype independent-runner tunnel ram with twin 4500-series Holley 4-barrel race carburetors. This serious engine also has a solid-roller camshaft, 13.0:1 compression, Hooker headers, rev-limiter and cool can. The engine is backed by an A833 4-speed transmission and 4.88 Dana 60 rear end with chrome cover. Presented stunningly in the legendary red, white and blue team livery, this car has a black bucket-seat interior, Hurst shifter, cable-driven tachometer and period-installed gauging. Well-known within the Mopar hobby and restored to competition specifications, this car also has Keystone wheels, correct Firestone Drag 500 slicks and an original broadcast sheet. Gorgeous with correct decals and excellent painted-on team lettering, this Plymouth is instantly recognizable by those who remember the glory days of racing. However, only this car can lay claim to being a true Sox & Martin drag-racing vehicle whose origins were a production-line-built 1970 Hemi Cuda.

They say all good things must come to an end, sooner or later. On Thursday December 11th, the Central Oregon & Pacific would run one last train out of Weed to finish clearing all the cars out of California and forwarding them to Medford, Oregon barely 10 years after reopening of the line in November 2015.

 

With the closure of the RFP veneer mill in Weed, virtually no shippers remain on this nearly 100-mile section of the railroad. And thus before a maintenance embargo can be implemented, every railcar must be cleared out of the trackage affected. On this last run, the train would have nearly 50 cars by the time they reached the state line, making it quite possibly the biggest train over the Siskiyous since the SP or maybe even the RailAmerica years.

 

From dawn to dusk on Thursday, me and my buddy Luke would follow the train northbound as it slowly built in size. Many more people from as far north as Albany, and as far south as the bay area would show up to see the action (and it certainly lived up to the hype) even though the weather was not always ideal.

 

It is quite unfortunate that many railroaders and laborers' hard work of keeping the railroad open in recent years is all going to waste thanks to the closure and exodus of another. While there is still hope that the mill in Weed can be reopened under new ownership, only time will tell. Interchange traffic from the Rogue Valley might also still be in the cards, but only if Union Pacific cooperates. If not CORP will more than likely let the route rot like Tennessee Pass, and even pull out of the lease all together.

Luggage forwarding is quite common in Japan. People will pay for the convenience of having a company deliver your luggage from door-to-door rather than struggle with it on busy trains and buses. It's quite reasonably priced too.

 

This driver works for Yamato Transport, recognisable by its black cat logo, and one of the bigger firms offering the service.

Alkmaar, a traditional merchant cheese market as operated in the post-medieval period, re-enacted during the summer months for tourists. The shows are today surrounded by stalls selling all things traditional to the Dutch culture, including cheese.

  

Dutch cheese farmers traditionally brought their cheeses to the market square in town to sell. Teams (vemen) of official guild cheese-porters (kaasdragers), identified by differently coloured straw hats associated with their forwarding company, carried the farmers' cheese on barrows, which typically weighed about 160 kilograms. Running about 40 minutes late here, GBRf’s 66706 sweeps through Woodhouse Station on former G.C. metals as it heads to Barrow Hill to recess before forwarding its load of aggregates to Brentford Town. The train, 6V09 has originated from Tunstead Quarry in the Peak District. 9th July 13.

During my working days a large part of the business I was directly involved in was the international forwarding of hi-tech industry and through that I was a Director within the HTFN ... Hi-Tech Forwarders Network.

 

We had many conferences and this is one of the posters held in Miami, which I had framed. Although travelling to many parts of the world was most interesting it was somewhat exhausting ~ fly overseas, be met and taken to a hotel, then a conference for a few days and then business and then back on a flight and off to another city and or country .... I did that for a good number of years!
