Almost dark and almost a full Sturgeon Moon. The moon rising on the Potomac River two days before a Super Full Moon. Fort Washington is across the river. This was taken on the Mount Vernon Memorial Parkway at Fort Hunt. #NPS #MountVernonMemorialParkway #moon #SturgeonMoon

August full Moon was traditionally called the Sturgeon Moon because the giant sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this part of summer.

The photo was stacked by 2 images, and taken from Virginia side of Potomac river.

A Least Sandpiper feeding on an aquatic worm or bug. She was in a small shallow pool and I was laid out prone on the ground at the very edge of the mudflat. This image was taken during late the late summer shorebird southern migration. Please view large for best worm eating experience! :D

Thank YOU for stopping by~!

am I the fairest Least Sandpiper of all? :D We are now back to the regularly scheduled programming of birds, nature, and wildlife. I took this image of a Least Sandpiper several weeks ago as she was foraging in a small and still pool of water. The shorebird actually got quite close and I was afraid I would not be able to capture both the bird and the reflection in the frame. I was barely able to eke them both in. Please view large for best experience.

I have been very busy at work and life in general and have not had the opportunity to visit many of your photostreams as of late. I plan on catching up in the coming days.

As always, Thank You for stopping by. Enjoy the evening~!

This Least Sandpiper waded out into a small pool searching for morsels of food. I don't know why she is in this upright position, as you rarely see this sandpiper in that type of stance. Just prior to this image, the bird was in a skirmish with another Least Sandpiper, so maybe this is a defensive posture. Although the smallest of the peep species, definitely an attractive bird. Please view large for the best Least experience! :D

My goal this past weekend was to photograph shorebirds and to capture at least one species that I have not previously encountered. Mission accomplished, and I will be sharing a variety of shorebird species in the coming days. Stay tuned.

Once again, thanks to all who visit my photostream, and fave and comment on my images. Thank you!

This species is one of my favorite shorebirds. The Lesser Yellowlegs is the "giraffe" of the shorebird world with long yellow legs and neck. They are also quite elegant given their features and boat shaped body. A very active species, seemingly always in motion, searching for morsels of food. I have photographed this species before, so they are not new to me, but will not pass up an opportunity to snap a few clicks when I run across them. View large for best Yellowlegs experience!

Thank you for stopping by. Enjoy the day~!

One of my goals during the past late summer shorebird migration was to find and photography a Spotted Sandpiper. These are not rare shorebirds by any means, but one that I had yet to see or image. I found the bird in this image, as well as other shorebirds, in a small drainage pond in a suburban corporate park (of all places!). The bird was not exactly cooperative and would not make as close of an approach as I would of liked. Anyway, she came close enough for a respectable image. I decided to do some creative processing on this one in LR and PS to give the image a spot light look. Not sure how I feel about that. Please view large for best Spotted experience. :D

Thanks again to all who visit, view, fave and comment on my images. Have a great day~!

This doe was partially obscured by leaves, but then so was I as she looks around the leaves to figure out what I am.

I was staying with a friend and she had a small group of doe with some fawn that came near the house. I was trying to get some fawn shots when I crept out of the house and slowly made my way around the building. I was trying to be stealthy but as I came around the bend in the road this doe noticed me. I stayed still as she was looking at me when I captured this image.

More brickwork at the old Fort Washington in Maryland.

This iss an L-shaped tunnel outside the main fortress. The windows on the right look down on the Potomac River. Judging by the way my voice echoed, it would have been pretty noisy in here if a platoon of soldiers had opened fire on an invading force scrambling up the hill.

Inside one of the magazines at Fort Washington, an imposing fortress on a bluff above the Potomac River downstream from Washington, D.C.

The first version was built in 1809, and this one was completed in the 1840s. It was last used by the military in 1946 and is now run as a historic site by the National Park Service.

Aside from its sheer size and height above the river, the detail that stands out is how much brick was used in its construction. Most of the forts I've seen are made entirely of stone.

Definitely a CSX train (C770?), definitely on the CSX Morrisville Line, the question is why, the answer is...I don't remember.

I snuck up on this fawn in the shadows and was able to take some photos before it decided to leave.

"Grab Shot 101"

Pulled up, parked the car, heard the horns. To get to where I really wanted to take the image would have required me sprinting pretty much right in front of them. No wise, in any way. Sometimes, grab shot 101 is what you get. Deal with it, right?

Fort Washington, MD

Fort Washington State Park is a 493-acre (200 ha) Pennsylvania state park in Springfield and Whitemarsh Townships, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania in the United States. The park is noted for the springtime flowering of dogwood trees, and is popular with families for picnics and hiking. It is approximately 17 miles (27 km) north of Philadelphia, 2 miles (3.2 km) from exit 339 of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The park takes its name from the temporary fort built by George Washington’s troops in the fall of 1777, before heading to Valley Forge.

24K rolls into Morrisville Yard, with a slightly beaten and battered Jersey Central Lines H/U on the point. As a side note, I'd typically try to move some of the junk laying around, but a NS maintainer was parked right next to me, and I decided it wasn't the best choice to attempt trash removal.

Another generic crappy photo, featuring generic power, location and angle. Someday, I'll find the needed greatness, until then, here's' 20Q, nearing its final destination of Morrisville, Pa.
