The Dutch built the Fort St. Jago (1652) at Elmina, Ghana, to control the landward approach to their main base at St. George's Castle.
ELMINA, GHANA - October 10, 2015: Fisherman return to Elmina after an early morning catch. The coastline is dominated by St. George's Castle, the oldest European settlement south of the Sahara and former capital of the Portuguese Gold Coast. Fort St. Jago provides additional security from the town's highest vantage point.
High up in the St Jago Hill overlooking the whole of Elmina, the fort was supposed to be converted to a hotel, but ten years on, it does not look like this hotel is ever going to be built.
