According to research by the historian Sidney Perley there was a house on the lot at 27 Centre St. by January 21, 1692, which, if not much earlier in date, may possibly be the original left-hand portion of the present structure of single-room plan with narrow chimney bay. The house has been enlarged through the addition of another room to the right and has been moved (though remaining on the same lot). Principal interest, however, attaches to the early nineteenth-century owners who between 1801 and 1818 were housewrights and were probably responsible for the unusual way in which the original narrow chimney bay has been widened and the original room reduced in size during this period. The records show that John Houlton and Jonathan Walcott filed a complaint on May 28 against several accused “witches,” among them Martha Carrier of Andover, Wilmott Redd (alternate spelling Read) of Marblehead, Elizabeth How (alternate spelling Howe) of Topsfield, John Alden of Boston, and Mary Toothaker of Billerica, charging them with afflicting Mary Walcott, Abigail Williams, Ann Putnam Jr., and Mercy Lewis.
John, born circa 1667, was the son of Joseph and Sarah Houlton who lived in the house at 19 Centre Street. He was about 25 years old during the time of the witchcraft delusion.

was conveyed to Elijah Hutchinson of Middleton, housewright, by Daniel
Dutch of Ipswich, a deputy sheriff, on an execution issued on a judgment recovered by Mr. Hutchinson i n a suit against Mr. Cross, Mr. Cross released the title to the estate to Mr. Hutchinson two days later. Mr. Hutchinson removedtothisplace,andcontinuedhistradeasahousewright. Hedied Sept. 9, 1818 and, as administrator of hisestate, Joseph Hutchinson conveye the land and buildings to David Wilkins of Danvers, blacksmith, May 7, 1819. Mr. Wilkins' shop stood southerly from hishouse on land of Samuel Small.
