Eveleigh Treehouse responds to the history and character of the site’s former incarnation as Eveleigh Railway Workshops.

Situated on the traditional land of the Gadigal people, Eveleigh Treehouse is conceived as a site of belonging for adults and children alike, a retreat from the bustle of daily life. Built from steel and recycled hardwood, the two drop-like forms of the Treehouse are whimsical.

Our desire was to integrate the community as a key component of the construction process. The Eveleigh Treehouse required thousands of forged steel leaves, each individually hammered and shaped to ensure a non-homogenous outcome.

To realise the Treehouse, we partnered with Eveleigh Works to run a series of workshops where participants could learn basic skills in blacksmithing. Under careful instruction, they heated and hammered each steel leaf into its own unique form. Participants also engraved their initials on each leave, providing a sense of ownership to all involved.

Valley Forge as occupied by regiments of the Colonial Army under command of General Washington in 1777.

I really wish I had done a FP or something different with the angling as the horizon line for this scene is too far off, but whatever. I'm still kind of happy with this scene. The main inspiration was trying to construct one of the log cabins the men built when they first arrived at the site.

Enjoy.

The village center contains the joint household estate of the Broz family and the birth house of the statesman Josip Broz Tito, with an ethnographic and historical exhibition.

Apart from the preserved architecture of around 40 reconstructed facilities, the museum houses valuable objects, crafts and traditions typical of this region. In this traditional country setting you will learn about forging, pottery making and weaving or the manufacture of traditional wooden toys inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Earth’s newest land expands in dramatic fashion in this view looking down on land a quarter mile or more further out than the old coastline. Red hot lava breaks out of the crusted over lava delta, pouring into the sea and literally boiling the ocean water into a cloud of laze. It’s amazing to think of the huge volume of lava required to feed such a massive amount of new land, with the coastal mass expanding over a 2 mile wide section. By this point in the eruption the volume had already decreased from an estimated peak of 26,000 gallons of lava per second flying out of Fissure 8 at 18 miles per hour. The sometimes violent interaction between 2,000 degree lava and the cool Pacific waters was spectacular to behold. This view is from 3,000 feet up in our Paradise Helicopters charter.

NS 8103 forges through an intense downpour as it navigates coke empties across the Ohio River at Kenova. The bridge at Kenova is one of the signature locations of the former N&W, and catching the heritage unit here was an absolute delight. The train was combined with an empty coal drag at Portsmouth before heading into the heart of the Pocahontas.

I encountered 8103 by pure chance. As I drove Eastward on Route 823 for home, I noticed a headlight for an opposing train (as one often does on this stretch of road). I was only mildly interested until the blue and yellow of the N&W heritage unit blew by me at track speed. I made a frantic U-turn and raced it back to Kenova, beating it by only a couple of minutes

Forging strong camaraderie within their own ranks is a core tenet of G.I. Joe's warfighting philosophy. One of the preeminent facilitators of this is Gunnery Sergeant Wendell "Leatherneck" Metzger, a U.S. Marine tasked with balancing the rigorous tasks of both frontline infantry and warfare training. Having previously served as a Drill Instructor on board Parris Island, Leatherneck is no stranger to pushing recruits to their physical and mental limits to be the best at what they do, and he asserts that the same principle must also be applied to those who have already earned their titles in the armed services. For him, training never truly ends, and his method of playing as the "enemy" in training evolutions is done to keep new members of the Joe team on constant alert.

His abrasive and less-than-personable attitude with others is a universally-recognized trait in Leatherneck's character, but the man himself uses it to convey the message that you may not like the people you work with, but you must be completely willing, comfortable, and able to fight alongside them to accomplish the greater mission at hand. Rumor says that the only other Joe that Leatherneck has any sign of an actual friendship with is Petty Officer 2nd Class Brian "Wet Suit" Forrest, a Navy SEAL with the same affinity for rigorous training to build physical and mental strength. Their separate branches of origin make their rivalry inevitable and their arguments gargantuan, but their respect for each other is foundational, and they watched each other's backs to great effect during the first invasion of Cobra Island.

Day 359

Megan helped me take this yesterday at the tree farm! I have not sat down for the past couple of days, and now I need to go to bed. I will write a run-down of what I have been doing eventually though, I promise. Haha :)

Much maligned and I only photograph them in very good light, the Avanti West Coast Voyagers are now an 'endangered species'.

I personally hate to travel on these things but they have put in a prodigious amount of miles for their TOC's since their introduction in 2002.

* In December 2019, Avanti West Coast placed an order for 10 seven-car Class 807 electric units which will replace its Voyager fleet, along with 13 Class 805 bi-mode units as part of £350 million contract with Hitachi. These are planned to enter service in 2023.

Lench’s Oliver Shop at the Black Country Living Museum, an open-air museum of rebuilt historic buildings, in Dudley, West Midlands.

Originally built around 1910 by the 'odd worker' Onan Lowe, the Oliver Shop was subsequently taken over in the 1930s by TW Lench of Blackheath, the major nut and bolt manufacturer, to respond to requests for ‘specials’ from customers.

Here the oliversmiths worked at the ten hearths to forge a variety of small wrought iron items known in the Black Country as ‘oddwork’ such as pipe clamps, wall hooks and special bolts.

An underground pipe system fed a blast of air to the ten hearths each with an oliver hammer and a treadle operated forging hammer fitted with a pair of shaped tools which enabled the oliversmith to make a wide variety of fittings.

If none of the tools were suitable for making the order the smith would hand craft a new pair. Demand for oddwork declined after World War II but three oliversmiths were still working at Lench’s until 1979.

I got snow shoes so I could hike in deep snow. I wanted to see if I could actually do it. While the shoes certainly made it possible, it didn't mean it was easy. I didn't bring a sweatband for my forehead because it was 15 degrees outside. It's crazy to think I would need one. But I had to wipe my forehead every few steps and it was almost impossible for me to see or enjoy the view. Fortunately my camera could capture it and I could enjoy the view later at my leisure :)

I desperately need to figure out how to arrange a way for me to sit without soaking my bum :). I'll probably need to get some kind of snow pants.
