Mother Nature only came to play in our area for a very short time. Was expecting a much better scenario than just 1 picture. Though I know the hype when it comes to severe storms. I'll be patient. My time is coming!

Not many chase days in the month of June 2017, as this day turned out way better than expected. You never know what you might encounter on a decent moderate risk day which was mostly on the eastern side of Nebraska and Western Iowa.
These first cells were moving from the north to the south as I encountered them just to the east of Schuyler Nebraska. I didn't have to to travel to western Iowa as all the action stayed in eastern Nebraska that day. It was mostly an HP mess for most of the ride till then.
Some decent structure out in front of this cell, so you know I what I was doing!

We had to pack up and move south via Hwy 283 South then Head due east of Hwy 89. This route takes us though Beaver City, Orleans, and eventually just north of Alma Nebraska.
Now just north of Alma Nebraska...
We didn't allow us much time to find a suitable spot for us to the base of the storm.
We had limited time when we stopped. Storm was approaching fast from the southwest. Where we stopped I wasn't considering how high the corn here in Nebraska in late August. We didn't get a choice to move. It was now or never. So we stopped & set up fast and got with I could with 4k @ ground level.
It was our best structure of severe weather 2021. Defined Meso... Eye Candy Structure.... What more could we ask for!

Unpacked and gear out close to home as a non severe thunderstorm approached from the due south of Kearney Nebraska. Just on the outskirts of the city just to the east of Kearney High school .
A few pics that didn't make it to my Flickr Photostream in 2020. So I'm adding them now.
I do so much sky photography and at that time of year when I take these, they sometimes get lost within the fold. So at the end of each year I find a few that are worthy of being posted!

When we chase, SAFETY is the number 1 thing that I stress to the individuals that chase with me. I have to practice what I preach.
We have to find a safe spot to pull off and get the pics, vids Once we make this choice to pull off when always include a EXIT plan before we stop. (Chasing for all these years, I've learned a very valuable lesson. Never stop unless you have an open an safe exit area when chasing severe weather

Now just north of Norton Kansas, storm cells were in severe warning stages and we were in the perfect position to get some excellent captures.
This cell was building and now shifting to the southeast. Incredible cc & cg lightning was illuminating the sky.
No Stacking on this image! 60 Second exposure, mother nature did all the work. I have never caught 6 CG Strikes at one time.... This was a first for me!

Check out this Incredible Nebraska Shelf Cloud. Heading south via Hwy 15. Even after some horrible road construction, and a detour from HELL, my timing was on the spot.
Now in front of this severe warned thunderstorm. Via Hwy 92 West... I had camera in hand and video to stream this event live that afternoon. This supercell was a Photographic Beast!

Final Shots of that evening as the intensity of this storm was strengthening. It had some wicked good outflow winds once it came a little closer.

I have this uncanny knack to get to the right place at the right time when it comes to storms... This one was another spot on encounter. I decided to eyeball this storm and put away the radar and other electronics and just chase use the old way.
It had been a few weeks since any good photographic storms. We had Severe Thunderstorm warnings counties south of Phelps county (Located in South Central Nebraska) that afternoon.
Raced this cell and I was now in position to capture this beauty. Just a few miles north of Elm Creek on Hwy 183. This place has the best view over the valley. Worst cell phone reception ever.. even with a 4g booster I couldn't push out a signal.

It was my last hurrah for 2017.
I had a little time to kill. So I drove under this cell to get on back side of this storm. I knew that the light was perfect for ambient light.
Might as well take advantage of it before I headed south to the cells i would end up chasing that afternoon. I couldn't have asked for a better natural lighting! Thank You Mother Nature!

I was getting pelted with quarter sized hail I was taking snaps as fast as I could. 70 mph winds prevented my holding the camera steady but I did get in a few good shots.
Inside the bear cage... I was in the wrong place at the right time. I didn't wimp out... I did stick around for about 30 seconds to get these few additional captures.

Just to the west of Odessa Nebraska...
First few shots of the day as this already severe warned storm was approaching from the northwest of my current location. Got in alignment of where I thought I had the best possible chance for pics & video. An open view with no power lines. Which is rare. Even in Nebraska.
There were actually 2 storm cells. Both were severe warned. I was on the outer boundaries of the western storm. The eastern storm was going to eventually merge with this storm & become one.
The lean or tilt in this storm meant business. Nothing to take away its energy for doing its building process. Rotation was imminent, though question was would this storm produce a tornado?

Working on Spring projects with the wife. Enjoying our day together. Plans were made & I had no plans for chasing any storms even if they form.
Honestly, My time with family succeeds any other activity. I knew there were storms to the south of us this day. But again it was family time. I didn't even look on radar.
Finished our projects & went out to the front of the house and my jaw dropped!!! Literally in front of me this incredible updraft on a NON-severe warned storm. This had no warning on it, and I was dumbfounded. Asked... Wife said go get'm Tiger... Rest is History.
Storm Chasing is not always about catching a Tornado. This storm cell was already in its dying stages... Finished off this afternoon with some up close and personal shots of this dying thunderstorm!

Soundbound on Hwy 69. Just on the outer edge of this southward moving storm. The sun was peaking through, and there wasn't a soul in either direction. Pulled over to capture a few examples of Nebraska's Majestic Nature!

Wasn't looking forward to the 3 hour drive back home. What was left of the storm was a HP mess. I sat back for about 30 minutes and let the rain push east. After I got my bearings, I was headed east.
Sun was setting. I was under the perfect light conditions. Back side of the storm, via Hwy 6/34. I couldn't have asked a better photographic opportunity.

Now back in South Central Nebraska... We were about to experience the strongest outflow boundary of the year. 110-120 mph winds were accompanied by this super strong beast. Tons of cloud to cloud lightning and beautiful arcus shelf cloud structure was beautiful view as she approached from the southwest.
Now moving almost directly due east we had to jimmy south to Alma Nebraska from Hwy 89 to get back in front of this monster. Believe it or not, the calm before the storm was evident here. No wind until the shelf came over our heads and then we got hit hard. Luckily we had gear already prepped and put away as headed north as soon as this hit our location.
Though you know me... I waited till the very last second to get these captures!

It's June, Hot Humid... It's Prime Time Storm Season...
Though we only had a 10% chance of any type of development of storm that afternoon & evening. In fact all of the storms that day were to stay in western Nebraska and move to the north out of range of South Central Nebraska. That obviously was wrong!
I had just finished putting on the 2nd coat of stain on the new deck. Friends had stopped over to check on my progress. I had been so involved on completing the task at hand I didn't notice the lighting to the south of the city.
Let it be said I was unprepared and these 2 storms that rolled though that evening were unexpected. It was the reason I was finishing the staining of the deck. Though I did have everything charged and ready to go just in case. Wrapped up what I could and covered the new patio as best I could which would be a waste of time due to it all blew away!
This is the 2nd set of storms for that evening. I got lucky and into position just to the west of the city to watch this shelf cloud from its origin to when it came overhead.
Can I say priceless. Captured this life cycle of a shelf cloud... It was a nasty bugger of a storm also. 60+mph hour winds and some torrential rain.

There were mild pulse storms that afternoon in western & central Nebraska. Some eventually became defined storms. This one rolled in from due west right at dusk's twilight.
Outflow dominate with a nice defined shelf cloud. Eventually it was severe warned as it crept ever so slowly that evening to my location.

An Epic Chase Day was upon us. Though the rest of the Nation was celebrating the Holiday. National Weather Service had us pegged for a moderate risk that afternoon & evening. Due to my injures to my back the past few months. Chasing Storms has been on the back burner... Until Now!!!
First cells of the day were in North Central Kansas. The boundary line was from North Central Kansas up to Norfolk Nebraska & a bit further north. All the action that day was going to be the east of Hastings Nebraska & South. Planned it out correctly for time & distance.
We encountered this incredible updraft structure on the back side of this storm as we were passing though Hastings Nebraska. Were were trying to catch up to it Via Hwy 6 & we eventually we did just to the east to Sutton Nebraska.
This storm was producing 2" hail so we held off a few mins to the the west of Sutton. We had perfect view of the wall cloud due southwest of the hail core. Had a nice tail but never formed.
Proceeded south to get south of revved up supercell. We got along side of it via Hwy 81 south of Geneva Nebraska. Few miles south of Strang Nebraska we got ahead of the rain core & got in sight (paralleled to this storm) of this incredible developing wall cloud under the base of this storm. It did not produce a tornado but the views from this supercell were down right spectacular.
We had to reposition ourselves a few miles south of Bruning Nebraska as this Supercell move south southeast. The video & images I caught that afternoon were worth the trip. Phenomenal Storm Captures out on the plains of South Central Nebraska on the 4th of July.
Made it home to light of some fireworks & delicious bbq. Nice end to this day with family & friends after this Epic Storm Chasing Day!

36 Years ago, with a peaked curiosity, I dove feverishly into the world of storm chasing and well, the rest is history. Fast forward a few years and my current journey in storm photography & videography has unlocked a completely new life that I never imagined would exist. Oh how my adventures continue...
Mother Nature definitely orchestrated her magic on this first storm chase of the season. Warm front had positioned itself right over the state of Nebraska. Pulling in all that warm moist air from the south created the perfect conditions for severe thunderstorm development. I was on the hunt & wouldn't be denied this day.
I got to witness 3 very sculptured Supercells this day. The first encounter was north of Franklin Nebraska. Was right along side this beast via Nebraska Hwy 136 & Hwy 10. Storm was cresting to the northeast & I had the perfect view...

Finally severe thunderstorms moved into South Central Nebraska for the first time this year. That was a looooong wait. Yes the rest of the state has seen its fair share of this but my home turf has seen very little in 2023. Rain Yes, Severe Weather No...
So I was prepared... Not much for severity except for the small hail the winds. We had a brief, and I mean brief wall cloud form to the north of the city.

Due to my severe back injury in May... I've had to stay local this year in case I have issues. They have happened recently & I sure don't want to be 500 miles from home when my back decides to flare up. Things have happen recently which I have no control over. So I'm playing it safe with my health in 2023. Chasing only local storms this year.
To answer some of your PM questions of why I'm not chasing storms out of my local area. Have had to work on keeping healthy so I can go out & do what I do best.

We had to pack up and move south via Hwy 283 South then Head due east of Hwy 89. This route takes us though Beaver City, Orleans, and eventually just north of Alma Nebraska.
Now just north of Alma Nebraska...
We didn't allow us much time to find a suitable spot for us to the base of the storm. A few things to note here.
When we chase, SAFETY is the number 1 thing that I stress to the individuals that chase with me. I have to practice what I preach.
We have to find a safe spot to pull off and get the pics, vids. Once we make this choice to pull off when always include a EXIT plan before we stop. (Chasing for all these years, I've learned a very valuable lesson. Never stop unless you have an open an safe exit area when chasing severe weather
We had limited time when we stopped. Storm was approaching fast from the southwest. Where we stopped I wasn't considering how high the corn here in Nebraska in late August. We didn't get a choice to move. It was now or never. So we stopped & set up fast and got with I could with 4k @ ground level.
It was our best structure of severe weather 2021. Defined Meso... Eye Candy Structure.... What more could we ask for!

Another good storm cell was developing to my south. It was just north of Paradise Kansas. Back end of this storm had some beautiful structure, storm chasing eye candy to end the day.

Most of you know that follow me on Flickr & Social Media... that I love good opportunities to capture lightning. It was one of the reasons why I took up storm photography 20+ years ago. I didn't have many opportunities in 2016 to capture lightning...
This year it started off with a Bang. I couldn't have asked for a better situation. Disappointed of that afternoons chase... I was redeemed by the storms ample cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning strikes. An epic night of storm photography!

Early season storms here in Nebraska are simply surreal. The epic beauty that surpasses the sunset's ability to crest its light against the ominous position of this storm that evening.
Sunset cresting into twilight with a huge anvil (Cumulonimbus Incus) approaching from the northwest into South Central Nebraska.
I had way over colorized saturated other things to this original set of images. So I went back & took the raw images back to their original color templates & remastered them back to the original color specs of the origin image.
I only had a few of these published when I posted them back in 2017. Here is the entire set reworked!

Myles Nelson on your Right and I am on the left! The last pic of the day...and this set!
We had a long drive back to home! Behind the storm that afternoon was a full lit sky of mammatus cloud. We had to wait for the sun to peek out behind the clouds but that is when the real magic happened. The sky at dusk was simply epic!
An experienced... storm chaser knows that after the storm is one of the most photogenic parts of the storm. Some of the best shots I've ever taken have been on the backside of a thunderstorm. I call them Thundersets!
Now...if your not a storm chaser and one is patient enough to wait for the base of the storm to move with the limits of the sunset light. Special things can happen, have your camera ready there is always some magic happening!
This was that experience. There is no place like Nebraska!

Got off work late this night... and I was already tired from the night before. Severe storms came in about 3:30am and of course I wouldn't miss it for the world. Even if I had work @ 8am. Believe me when I say I was beet and tired just off a 10 hour shift. Though I'm a trooper when it comes to my dedication for severe storm photography I make every storm count. I did with this one!
With that being said this was a non severe storm that came into town about 10:30pm that evening. Super Slow mover only about 10mph moving due east. Shooting off incredible displays of forked cloud to cloud lightning. Especially when it moved right overhead! Probably the best display of cloud to cloud lighting of the year in South Central Nebraska. Some incredible captures in the set of images.

Talk about being disappointed. Lightning is by far my favorite thing to capture. If you have watched my video on this day on my Facebook Link, you would find about 30 images that I didn't have focused. Talk about wanting to shoot my self in the foot. It would have been some of my best captures to date.....
I did redeem myself though. The storm was still firing off a ton of cg lightning. Refocused my lens and captured these final shots of day.
It was a day to remember!

Just to the west of Odessa Nebraska...
This cell was really taking good shape. It was tightening with visible rotation. Plus with both storms now centering in on my location, I had to either get packed up and move to another location farther south or stay here just take in the show.
The road network isn't the best for making fast moves south due to the Interstate & Platte River less than 3 miles to my south. Next exit was about 4 miles to my west & that would have put be right under this storm.
The finial decision was easy. I was already set up & was going to stay the course til it forced me to leave.

36 Years ago, with a peaked curiosity, I dove feverishly into the world of storm chasing and well, the rest is history. Hwy 6 westbound to Holdrege Nebraska. Where I encountered this Monster Supercell just to the west of Holdrege Nebraska.
Nicely defined structure on this storm cell as it crested almost due east towards my location.

Southwest of of Overton Nebraska...
This set of images is what I live for... Those epic moments when you finally hunted/found what your looking for. It does take a lot of patience to storm chase. The waiting, the planning, the doing. But the rewards at the end are priceless. My antlers on the wall.
Now for some storm chasers... the Holy Grail of Storm chasing is a Tornado. But not for me. It is events like this that give the full definition of Storm Chasing. It really what storm chasing Eye Candy is all about! It is the "Why" or the understanding of why I do this!
One the edge of this Nebraska Supercell I felt the AWE of Mother Nature!

Another Incredible Nebraska Skyscape. Beautiful July ambient light, against a dying thunderstorm. Nope it's not severe but it's what I do when the light is right. Plus, I was super sick... A few days away from being forced into the hospital. I'm better now, and thankful.. that's a story to come!
I honestly took extra time on these captures. I was using a new filter on my new lens. So no added color or any adjustments to the image in Photoshop on this set. Now I had to bring them through Photoshop from raw... but that's it and of course the pano's are done separately.
Also... I only had one camera...for video that evening. Otherwise you would have seen this first storm cross over and you would have seen some sweet Nebraska thunderstorm views. Just to the east southeast. July Mammatus... these are just as sweet as this video... Just captures though...These have been added to this set.
It seemed the sicker I got, the better the photography I took... It was only about 10 days till I was forced into the hospital. I shouldn't have been out. But you don't get captures like this if you don't go try to catch them...
I was sick but had a blast, and what I caught was just Awesome!

The day wasn't over. Went home downloaded all the images video & charging all the equipment...
Late evening... about 10:30pm ish I had alerts set up for counties to my north just in case we had storms develop. Oh they did...
Weather Alert alarms were blasting warnings. Grabbed my gear and caught this crystal clear nighttime supercell off to the northeast of Kearney.
All those storms from earlier that afternoon made the sky crystal clear & perfect. Cloud to cloud âš¡ was just popping out of these thunderheads. It was the perfect opportunity to do what I do best!

Almost a month without a good photographic storm. This day I would stay local. This storm season was coming to an end and I didn't want to miss any opportunity for full photographic effect. These cells wouldn't disappoint.
We had severe warnings on this cell. I got right underneath the base as their was some rotation but nothing ever developed on this as I followed it for several miles as it tracked north, northeast.

I've always been told, that rainbows are special and are rare indeed. I have to believe that this is true. You simply have have to be at the right place at the right time. I was this particular day!
Soundbound on Hwy 69. Just on the outer edge of this southward moving storm. The sun was peaking through, and there wasn't a soul in either direction. Pulled over to capture a few examples of Nebraska's Majestic Nature!
