June was a tough month... Not only did I have my transmission go out on the truck. Their would be NO storm chasing for about 3 weeks. Of course its June and we did have few good storms pass though and I was disappointed that we couldn't go get em all.
Back in the saddle for this last June storm. Nice for almost end of season development. Under the base this storm no tornado was going to form due to it being undercut. Nice rotation in this cell though, and it was what we came for.

What a Day to remember...
I was just out of surgery for my left knee, I wasn't supposed to be out at all. Knee was swollen to the size of a soft ball or bigger. Wrapped & in a cast but I wasn't about to let one of the best photographic storms of the season pass me by. Mrs & Friends helped me into my truck. Gear in hand I was off!
Before I was able to get on this storm. Historically, this storm wrecked havoc on 16 counties with softball and baseball sized hail. I caught up with it just to the south of Minden Nebraska as I was traveling south. I would never get in front of it but only on the back side as it proceeded to the southeast into North Central Kansas.
From my point of view, it was one of the best photographic storm of the year in South Central Nebraska. Some incredible captures from the back side of this incredibly photogenic thunderstorm. Light & Shadow played well as the Sun peaked out at the end of this day!

I've been waiting... & I've had some opportunities to chase the past few systems that came through eastern Nebraska. But I didn't. Time factors & distance would have put me back home about 4:30am. I'm getting older... my bio-clock wasn't going to let me chase those storms.
Watching all the freak'n incredible pics every year, come across my feed from other chasers across the nation. Just some phenomenal storm photography already in 2023. I finally get to get a few snaps of some weak storms out that evening. At least it is a start.
I have to be patient & wait till late April to mid May to see anything of photographic significance come into play into south central Nebraska & north central Kansas. I'm not the only one noticing that 2023 has been weary of our normal moisture flow this time of year. Its has been rather dry & the drought here continues. Especially Western & South Central Nebraska this year.
I was glad to blow the dust of the old cam & get a few snaps of this evenings storm. Non Severe as it passed through south central Nebraska this evening. It sure was photogenic. Bet the farmers were enjoying what rain we did get out of this system.

It was time to move... storm was getting nasty and I had to get north to get back in front of this storm cell.
This storm had been moving about 15 mph to the north / northeast, now she had picked up steam and was cruising about 35 mph with torrential rain and dime to quarter sized hail.
I proceed due north and I couldn't get out of the heavy rain bans, until I got back just to the south of Kearney Nebraska....
This storm cell developed into a monster with quarter sized hail and 60+mph wind speeds. This was a terrific photographic beast. A dangerous but a fruitful basket of storm chasing eye candy!

The month of July in Nebraska is mostly just outflow storms from about mid June on. Meaning extremely strong outflow winds in front of this storm. Destructive that evening with winds over 60+ mph.
Once the storm base moved closer I was able to get some incredible cloud to ground strikes that would make for some of the best lighting captures of 2018. Like clock work I expected a late night storm with some phenomenal definition.
Beautiful crystal blue lightning illuminated the night as the arcus (shelf cloud) approached from the due west. Severe warnings were in place & right in my direction. Got to my location, set up the gear and went to town... Nothing but Crystal Blue Thunderstorm Eye Candy!!!

I have this uncanny knack to get to the right place at the right time when it comes to storms... This one was another spot on encounter. I decided to eyeball this storm and put away the radar and other electronics and just chase use the old way.
It had been a few weeks since any good photographic storms. We had Severe Thunderstorm warnings counties south of Phelps county (Located in South Central Nebraska) that afternoon.
Raced this cell and I was now in position to capture this beauty. Just a few miles north of Elm Creek on Hwy 183. This place has the best view over the valley. Worst cell phone reception ever.. even with a 4g booster I couldn't push out a signal.

It storm chasing go time this time of year. Another phenomenal day of storm chasing was upon us in South Central Nebraska.
We had another moderate risk day, and again, the sky was again talking to me. Best of all this was going to be a local chase day.
Back to Hwy 6, then north.. Had to catch up to the storm. I did but it was weakening, but still a photographic treat.

It has been an excellent start to the 2016 chase Season. Bonus was, that I had the day off and no commitments except for storm chasing. I was set for an Epic Day!
I ended up with well over 700 pic from this storm chasing event, but I've skimmed it down to about 100+. Truly this will become some of my best severe weather photography to date...
I was seriously late the game on this storm. But I was never out of the game. I had now positioned myself just to the North of Wray Colorado.
Strategically, you want to be to the south east, southwest for the best light... It's all about timing, and I thought it wouldn't produce till it was well west of my location. Giving me that perfect view of the backside rotation of the storm.
In my opinion, I found a perfect view, looking due south southeast. I ended up on the northwest side of the rotation. Dangerous yes...but this will eventually give me one excellent view of this tornado and all her glory.

Not many chase days in the month of June 2017, as this day turned out way better than expected. You never know what you might encounter on a decent moderate risk day which was mostly on the eastern side of Nebraska and Western Iowa.
These first cells were moving from the north to the south as I encountered them just to the east of Schuyler Nebraska. I didn't have to to travel to western Iowa as all the action stayed in eastern Nebraska that day. It was mostly an HP mess for most of the ride till then.
Some decent structure out in front of this cell, so you know I what I was doing!

We had to pack up and move south via Hwy 283 South then Head due east of Hwy 89. This route takes us though Beaver City, Orleans, and eventually just north of Alma Nebraska.
Now just north of Alma Nebraska...
We didn't allow us much time to find a suitable spot for us to the base of the storm.
We had limited time when we stopped. Storm was approaching fast from the southwest. Where we stopped I wasn't considering how high the corn here in Nebraska in late August. We didn't get a choice to move. It was now or never. So we stopped & set up fast and got with I could with 4k @ ground level.
It was our best structure of severe weather 2021. Defined Meso... Eye Candy Structure.... What more could we ask for!

Unpacked and gear out close to home as a non severe thunderstorm approached from the due south of Kearney Nebraska. Just on the outskirts of the city just to the east of Kearney High school .
A few pics that didn't make it to my Flickr Photostream in 2020. So I'm adding them now.
I do so much sky photography and at that time of year when I take these, they sometimes get lost within the fold. So at the end of each year I find a few that are worthy of being posted!

When we chase, SAFETY is the number 1 thing that I stress to the individuals that chase with me. I have to practice what I preach.
We have to find a safe spot to pull off and get the pics, vids Once we make this choice to pull off when always include a EXIT plan before we stop. (Chasing for all these years, I've learned a very valuable lesson. Never stop unless you have an open an safe exit area when chasing severe weather

Now just north of Norton Kansas, storm cells were in severe warning stages and we were in the perfect position to get some excellent captures.
This cell was building and now shifting to the southeast. Incredible cc & cg lightning was illuminating the sky.
No Stacking on this image! 60 Second exposure, mother nature did all the work. I have never caught 6 CG Strikes at one time.... This was a first for me!

Check out this Incredible Nebraska Shelf Cloud. Heading south via Hwy 15. Even after some horrible road construction, and a detour from HELL, my timing was on the spot.
Now in front of this severe warned thunderstorm. Via Hwy 92 West... I had camera in hand and video to stream this event live that afternoon. This supercell was a Photographic Beast!

This thunderstorm was becoming more defined as it strengthened.
National Weather Service had a severe warning on this cell as it was slowly moving to the east northeast. As we were east of Minden Nebraska and were finally able to pull out ahead of this cell.
We paused for a few minutes to absorb the moment!

Final Shots of that evening as the intensity of this storm was strengthening. It had some wicked good outflow winds once it came a little closer.
Got quite & calm for about 10 mins then all hell broke loose. Of course you know I waited till the last minute....

It storm chasing go time this time of year. Another phenomenal day of storm chasing was upon us in South Central Nebraska.
We had another moderate risk day, and again, the sky was again talking to me. Best of all this was going to be a local chase day.
Now on the hunt for the storms, heading east to the next set of developing storm cells. I came across this incredible rainbow just to the south of Giltner Nebraska.

I have this uncanny knack to get to the right place at the right time when it comes to storms... This one was another spot on encounter. I decided to eyeball this storm and put away the radar and other electronics and just chase use the old way.
It had been a few weeks since any good photographic storms. We had Severe Thunderstorm warnings counties south of Phelps county (Located in South Central Nebraska) that afternoon.
Raced this cell and I was now in position to capture this beauty. Just a few miles north of Elm Creek on Hwy 183. This place has the best view over the valley. Worst cell phone reception ever.. even with a 4g booster I couldn't push out a signal.

It was my last hurrah for 2017.
I had a little time to kill. So I drove under this cell to get on back side of this storm. I knew that the light was perfect for ambient light.
Might as well take advantage of it before I headed south to the cells i would end up chasing that afternoon. I couldn't have asked for a better natural lighting! Thank You Mother Nature!

I was getting pelted with quarter sized hail I was taking snaps as fast as I could. 70 mph winds prevented my holding the camera steady but I did get in a few good shots.
Inside the bear cage... I was in the wrong place at the right time. I didn't wimp out... I did stick around for about 30 seconds to get these few additional captures.

Just to the west of Odessa Nebraska...
First few shots of the day as this already severe warned storm was approaching from the northwest of my current location. Got in alignment of where I thought I had the best possible chance for pics & video. An open view with no power lines. Which is rare. Even in Nebraska.
There were actually 2 storm cells. Both were severe warned. I was on the outer boundaries of the western storm. The eastern storm was going to eventually merge with this storm & become one.
The lean or tilt in this storm meant business. Nothing to take away its energy for doing its building process. Rotation was imminent, though question was would this storm produce a tornado?

Lost the last light of the day... Slide back into the city limits to have the city lights paint the sky. Best way to get the low level light to work for me!
Sporadic cloud to ground lightning. More so the cloud to cloud lightning was illuminating this shelf cloud & underbelly of this storm. It was a fast mover so not many but a few gems to close out this night.

We had to pack up and move south via Hwy 283 South then Head due east of Hwy 89. This route takes us though Beaver City, Orleans, and eventually just north of Alma Nebraska.
Now just north of Alma Nebraska...
We didn't allow us much time to find a suitable spot for us to the base of the storm. A few things to note here.
When we chase, SAFETY is the number 1 thing that I stress to the individuals that chase with me. I have to practice what I preach.
We have to find a safe spot to pull off and get the pics, vids.
Once we make this choice to pull off when always include a EXIT plan before we stop. (Chasing for all these years, I've learned a very valuable lesson. Never stop unless you have an open an safe exit area when chasing severe weather
We had limited time when we stopped. Storm was approaching fast from the southwest. Where we stopped I wasn't considering how high the corn here in Nebraska in late August. We didn't get a choice to move. It was now or never. So we stopped & set up fast and got with I could with 4k @ ground level.
It was our best structure of severe weather 2021. Defined Meso... Eye Candy Structure.... What more could we ask for!

I've always been told, that rainbows are special and are rare indeed. I have to believe that this is true. You simply have have to be at the right place at the right time. I was this particular day!
Soundbound on Hwy 69. Just on the outer edge of this southward moving storm. The sun was peaking through, and there wasn't a soul in either direction. Pulled over to capture a few examples of Nebraska's Majestic Nature!

Wasn't looking forward to the 3 hour drive back home. What was left of the storm was a HP mess. I sat back for about 30 minutes and let the rain push east. After I got my bearings, I was headed east.
Sun was setting. I was under the perfect light conditions. Back side of the storm, via Hwy 6/34. I couldn't have asked a better photographic opportunity.

Now back in South Central Nebraska... We were about to experience the strongest outflow boundary of the year. 110-120 mph winds were accompanied by this super strong beast. Tons of cloud to cloud lightning and beautiful arcus shelf cloud structure was beautiful view as she approached from the southwest.
Now moving almost directly due east we had to jimmy south to Alma Nebraska from Hwy 89 to get back in front of this monster. Believe it or not, the calm before the storm was evident here. No wind until the shelf came over our heads and then we got hit hard. Luckily we had gear already prepped and put away as headed north as soon as this hit our location.
Though you know me... I waited till the very last second to get these captures!

It's June, Hot Humid... It's Prime Time Storm Season...
Though we only had a 10% chance of any type of development of storm that afternoon & evening. In fact all of the storms that day were to stay in western Nebraska and move to the north out of range of South Central Nebraska. That obviously was wrong!
I had just finished putting on the 2nd coat of stain on the new deck. Friends had stopped over to check on my progress. I had been so involved on completing the task at hand I didn't notice the lighting to the south of the city.
Let it be said I was unprepared and these 2 storms that rolled though that evening were unexpected. It was the reason I was finishing the staining of the deck. Though I did have everything charged and ready to go just in case. Wrapped up what I could and covered the new patio as best I could which would be a waste of time due to it all blew away!
This is the 2nd set of storms for that evening. I got lucky and into position just to the west of the city to watch this shelf cloud from its origin to when it came overhead.
Can I say priceless. Captured this life cycle of a shelf cloud... It was a nasty bugger of a storm also. 60+mph hour winds and some torrential rain.

There were mild pulse storms that afternoon in western & central Nebraska. Some eventually became defined storms. This one rolled in from due west right at dusk's twilight.
Outflow dominate with a nice defined shelf cloud. Eventually it was severe warned as it crept ever so slowly that evening to my location.

An Epic Chase Day was upon us. Though the rest of the Nation was celebrating the Holiday. National Weather Service had us pegged for a moderate risk that afternoon & evening. Due to my injures to my back the past few months. Chasing Storms has been on the back burner... Until Now!!!
First cells of the day were in North Central Kansas. The boundary line was from North Central Kansas up to Norfolk Nebraska & a bit further north. All the action that day was going to be the east of Hastings Nebraska & South. Planned it out correctly for time & distance.
We encountered this incredible updraft structure on the back side of this storm as we were passing though Hastings Nebraska. Were were trying to catch up to it Via Hwy 6 & we eventually we did just to the east to Sutton Nebraska.
This storm was producing 2" hail so we held off a few mins to the the west of Sutton. We had perfect view of the wall cloud due southwest of the hail core. Had a nice tail but never formed.
Proceeded south to get south of revved up supercell. We got along side of it via Hwy 81 south of Geneva Nebraska. Few miles south of Strang Nebraska we got ahead of the rain core & got in sight (paralleled to this storm) of this incredible developing wall cloud under the base of this storm. It did not produce a tornado but the views from this supercell were down right spectacular.
We had to reposition ourselves a few miles south of Bruning Nebraska as this Supercell move south southeast. The video & images I caught that afternoon were worth the trip. Phenomenal Storm Captures out on the plains of South Central Nebraska on the 4th of July.
Made it home to light of some fireworks & delicious bbq. Nice end to this day with family & friends after this Epic Storm Chasing Day!

This thunderstorm was becoming more defined as it strengthened.
National Weather Service had a severe warning on this cell as it was slowly moving to the east northeast. As we were east of Minden Nebraska and were finally able to pull out ahead of this cell.
We paused for a few minutes to absorb the moment!

Finally severe thunderstorms moved into South Central Nebraska for the first time this year. That was a looooong wait. Yes the rest of the state has seen its fair share of this but my home turf has seen very little in 2023. Rain Yes, Severe Weather No...
So I was prepared... Not much for severity except for the small hail the winds. We had a brief, and I mean brief wall cloud form to the north of the city.

Due to my severe back injury in May... I've had to stay local this year in case I have issues. They have happened recently & I sure don't want to be 500 miles from home when my back decides to flare up. Things have happen recently which I have no control over. So I'm playing it safe with my health in 2023. Chasing only local storms this year.
To answer some of your PM questions of why I'm not chasing storms out of my local area. Have had to work on keeping healthy so I can go out & do what I do best.

Another good storm cell was developing to my south. It was just north of Paradise Kansas. Back end of this storm had some beautiful structure, storm chasing eye candy to end the day.

3nd Chase of 2017...
Most of you know that follow me on Flickr & Social Media... that I love good opportunities to capture lightning. It was one of the reasons why I took up storm photography 20+ years ago. I didn't have many opportunities in 2016 to capture lightning...
This year it started off with a Bang. I couldn't have asked for a better situation. Disappointed of that afternoons chase... I was redeemed by the storms ample cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning strikes. An epic night of storm photography!
