This thunderstorm was becoming more defined as it strengthened.

National Weather Service had a severe warning on this cell as it was slowly moving to the east northeast. As we were east of Minden Nebraska and were finally able to pull out ahead of this cell.

We paused for a few minutes to absorb the moment!

There have been storms either out of my chasing area or constraint on the timing of them. So by saying this, it was my first chase of the 2026 storm season.

Massive supercell storm clouds approach over a flat expanse of rural farmland. The contrasting colors of the sky and the field enhance the ominous atmosphere.

Now back in Kearney, just off to the west of the city. Sitting on top of the bluff to get the best view of the valley below. 2 storms lined up, one that I was chasing to the south was moving to the north northeast and the cell growing fast by Elm Creek Nebraska was building. Eventually these would merge but not stay at any severeness for the rest of the evening. Though I had front row tickets to this show... wasn't gonna miss anything!

What a Day to remember...

I was just out of surgery for my left knee, I wasn't supposed to be out at all. Knee was swollen to the size of a soft ball or bigger. Wrapped & in a cast but I wasn't about to let one of the best photographic storms of the season pass me by. Mrs & Friends helped me into my truck. Gear in hand I was off!

Before I was able to get on this storm. Historically, this storm wrecked havoc on 16 counties with softball and baseball sized hail. I caught up with it just to the south of Minden Nebraska as I was traveling south. I would never get in front of it but only on the back side as it proceeded to the southeast into North Central Kansas.

From my point of view, it was one of the best photographic storm of the year in South Central Nebraska. Some incredible captures from the back side of this incredibly photogenic thunderstorm. Light & Shadow played well as the Sun peaked out at the end of this day!

Final Shots of that evening as the intensity of this storm was strengthening. It had some wicked good outflow winds once it came a little closer.

Got quite & calm for about 10 mins then all hell broke loose. Of course you know I waited till the last minute....

We had a long drive back to home! Behind the storm that afternoon was a full lit sky of mammatus cloud. We had to wait for the sun to peek out behind the clouds but that is when the real magic happened. The sky at dusk was simply epic!

An experienced... storm chaser knows that after the storm is one of the most photogenic parts of the storm. Some of the best shots I've ever taken have been on the backside of a thunderstorm. I call them Thundersets!

Now...if your not a storm chaser and one is patient enough to wait for the base of the storm to move with the limits of the sunset light. Special things can happen, have your camera ready there is always some magic happening!

This was that experience. There is no place like Nebraska!

I've been waiting... & I've had some opportunities to chase the past few systems that came through eastern Nebraska. But I didn't. Time factors & distance would have put me back home about 4:30am. I'm getting older... my bio-clock wasn't going to let me chase those storms.

Watching all the freak'n incredible pics every year, come across my feed from other chasers across the nation. Just some phenomenal storm photography already in 2023. I finally get to get a few snaps of some weak storms out that evening. At least it is a start.

I have to be patient & wait till late April to mid May to see anything of photographic significance come into play into south central Nebraska & north central Kansas. I'm not the only one noticing that 2023 has been weary of our normal moisture flow this time of year. Its has been rather dry & the drought here continues. Especially Western & South Central Nebraska this year.

I was glad to blow the dust of the old cam & get a few snaps of this evenings storm. Non Severe as it passed through south central Nebraska this evening. It sure was photogenic. Bet the farmers were enjoying what rain we did get out of this system.

Got off work late this night... and I was already tired from the night before. Severe storms came in about 3:30am and of course I wouldn't miss it for the world. Even if I had work @ 8am. Believe me when I say I was beet and tired just off a 10 hour shift. Though I'm a trooper when it comes to my dedication for severe storm photography I make every storm count. I did with this one!

With that being said this was a non severe storm that came into town about 10:30pm that evening. Super Slow mover only about 10mph moving due east. Shooting off incredible displays of forked cloud to cloud lightning. Especially when it moved right overhead! Probably the best display of cloud to cloud lighting of the year in South Central Nebraska. Some incredible captures in the set of images.

I have this uncanny knack to get to the right place at the right time when it comes to storms... This one was another spot on encounter. I decided to eyeball this storm and put away the radar and other electronics and just chase use the old way.

It had been a few weeks since any good photographic storms. We had Severe Thunderstorm warnings counties south of Phelps county (Located in South Central Nebraska) that afternoon.

Raced this cell and I was now in position to capture this beauty. Just a few miles north of Elm Creek on Hwy 183. This place has the best view over the valley. Worst cell phone reception ever.. even with a 4g booster I couldn't push out a signal.

Wasn't looking forward to the 3 hour drive back home. What was left of the storm was a HP mess. I sat back for about 30 minutes and let the rain push east. After I got my bearings, I was headed east.

Sun was setting. I was under the perfect light conditions. Back side of the storm, via Hwy 6/34. I couldn't have asked a better photographic opportunity.

I was getting pelted with quarter sized hail I was taking snaps as fast as I could. 70 mph winds prevented my holding the camera steady but I did get in a few good shots.

Inside the bear cage... I was in the wrong place at the right time. I didn't wimp out... I did stick around for about 30 seconds to get these few additional captures.

There were mild pulse storms that afternoon in western & central Nebraska. Some eventually became defined storms. This one rolled in from due west right at dusk's twilight.

Outflow dominate with a nice defined shelf cloud. Eventually it was severe warned as it crept ever so slowly that evening to my location.

Check out this Incredible Nebraska Shelf Cloud. Heading south via Hwy 15. Even after some horrible road construction, and a detour from HELL, my timing was on the spot.

Now in front of this severe warned thunderstorm. Via Hwy 92 West... I had camera in hand and video to stream this event live that afternoon. This supercell was a Photographic Beast!

In September, Nebraska’s sunsets transform into breathtaking spectacles, amplified by the dramatic presence of thunderstorms and supercells. As summer’s heat begins to wane, the Great Plains remain a hotbed for dynamic weather, with warm, moist air clashing against cooler fronts to create vibrant, fiery skies. We had another moderate risk day, and again, the sky was again talking to me. Best of all this was going to be a local chase day.

Now back in South Central Nebraska... We were about to experience the strongest outflow boundary of the year. 110-120 mph winds were accompanied by this super strong beast. Tons of cloud to cloud lightning and beautiful arcus shelf cloud structure was beautiful view as she approached from the southwest.

Now moving almost directly due east we had to jimmy south to Alma Nebraska from Hwy 89 to get back in front of this monster. Believe it or not, the calm before the storm was evident here. No wind until the shelf came over our heads and then we got hit hard. Luckily we had gear already prepped and put away as headed north as soon as this hit our location.

On the Last Stormchase of the Summer. I had to make this one count. First chase in my new truck. I couldn't have asked for a better Nebraska Stormscape Scenario!

Found and open spot just to the south of Merna Nebraska. Had the perfect view and this thunderstorm was talking!

Loaded all the gear out and started my thing. This truly would become one of my best photographic outings for storms in 2020. Glad I made the effort to go. In spite I just had major surgery 3 days before!

Nebraska gets a bad rap from folks that pass through this state due its flatness. (BTW the state is not all flat) Though It has some of the best perspectives one could ever want. It just depends on how you look at it.

I myself once hated to live here. Though my travels when I was younger I found out that Nebraska has a lot more to offer than what people think. You just have to look beyond what people say. There is a lot more here than one might think.

Perspective in this photograph... is what I want to you to view. The soul ambiance of a Pure Nebraska Sunset has its own magic. Until you experience this just once... Just as good as seeing one anywhere else on the Planet. In my words... better.

BTW there is a storm in the background.... lol Just had to put that in there...

Another good storm cell was developing to my south. It was just north of Paradise Kansas. Back end of this storm had some beautiful structure, storm chasing eye candy to end the day.

Early season storms here in Nebraska are simply surreal. The epic beauty that surpasses the sunset's ability to crest its light against the ominous position of this storm that evening.

Sunset cresting into twilight with a huge anvil (Cumulonimbus Incus) approaching from the northwest into South Central Nebraska.

I had way over colorized saturated other things to this original set of images. So I went back & took the raw images back to their original color templates & remastered them back to the original color specs of the origin image.

I only had a few of these published when I posted them back in 2017. Here is the entire set reworked!

I had a little time to kill. So I drove under this cell to get on back side of this storm. I knew that the light was perfect for ambient light.

Might as well take advantage of it before I headed south to the cells i would end up chasing that afternoon. I couldn't have asked for a better natural lighting! Thank You Mother Nature!

Myles Nelson on your Right and I am on the left! The last pic of the day...and this set!

We had a long drive back to home! Behind the storm that afternoon was a full lit sky of mammatus cloud. We had to wait for the sun to peek out behind the clouds but that is when the real magic happened. The sky at dusk was simply epic!

An experienced... storm chaser knows that after the storm is one of the most photogenic parts of the storm. Some of the best shots I've ever taken have been on the backside of a thunderstorm. I call them Thundersets!

Now...if your not a storm chaser and one is patient enough to wait for the base of the storm to move with the limits of the sunset light. Special things can happen, have your camera ready there is always some magic happening!

This was that experience. There is no place like Nebraska!

I've always been told, that rainbows are special and are rare indeed. I have to believe that this is true. You simply have have to be at the right place at the right time. I was this particular day!

Soundbound on Hwy 69. Just on the outer edge of this southward moving storm. The sun was peaking through, and there wasn't a soul in either direction. Pulled over to capture a few examples of Nebraska's Majestic Nature!

Just to the west of Odessa Nebraska...

This cell was really taking good shape. It was tightening with visible rotation. Plus with both storms now centering in on my location, I had to either get packed up and move to another location farther south or stay here just take in the show.

The road network isn't the best for making fast moves south due to the Interstate & Platte River less than 3 miles to my south. Next exit was about 4 miles to my west & that would have put be right under this storm.

The finial decision was easy. I was already set up & was going to stay the course til it forced me to leave.

We had to pack up and move south via Hwy 283 South then Head due east of Hwy 89. This route takes us though Beaver City, Orleans, and eventually just north of Alma Nebraska.

Now just north of Alma Nebraska...

We didn't allow us much time to find a suitable spot for us to the base of the storm.

We had limited time when we stopped. Storm was approaching fast from the southwest. Where we stopped I wasn't considering how high the corn here in Nebraska in late August. We didn't get a choice to move. It was now or never. So we stopped & set up fast and got with I could with 4k @ ground level.

It was our best structure of severe weather 2021. Defined Meso... Eye Candy Structure.... What more could we ask for!

September was still hot & humid within the wide open plains of Nebraska. The drought this time of year is normal. The heat is not. Was lucky to get this lone storm that afternoon.

The winding down of the storm season is right on time. We did have a few night storms with some good lighting. But my time is limited this time of year. Was only able to get this event.

A photogenic storm was what I need & what was received that afternoon. It was the last storm that I chased for 2022.

June was a tough month... Not only did I have my transmission go out on the truck. Their would be NO storm chasing for about 3 weeks. Of course its June and we did have few good storms pass though and I was disappointed that we couldn't go get em all.

Back in the saddle for this last June storm. Nice for almost end of season development. Under the base this storm no tornado was going to form due to it being undercut. Nice rotation in this cell though, and it was what we came for.

Talk about being disappointed. Lightning is by far my favorite thing to capture. If you have watched my video on this day on my Facebook Link, you would find about 30 images that I didn't have focused. Talk about wanting to shoot my self in the foot. It would have been some of my best captures to date.....

I did redeem myself though. The storm was still firing off a ton of cg lightning. Refocused my lens and captured these final shots of day.

It was a day to remember!

36 Years ago, with a peaked curiosity, I dove feverishly into the world of storm chasing and well, the rest is history. Fast forward a few years and my current journey in storm photography & videography has unlocked a completely new life that I never imagined would exist. Oh how my adventures continue...

Mother Nature definitely orchestrated her magic on this first storm chase of the season. Warm front had positioned itself right over the state of Nebraska. Pulling in all that warm moist air from the south created the perfect conditions for severe thunderstorm development. I was on the hunt & wouldn't be denied this day.

Supercell #3

Hwy 6 westbound to Holdrege Nebraska. Where I encountered this Monster Supercell just to the west of Holdrege Nebraska.

Nicely defined structure on this storm cell as it crested almost due east towards my location.

Late June 2026

Still waiting for a good storm. Either in North Central Kansas or South Central Nebraska. Really wanting another powerful storm. Nothing of significance was in the near future...

Meantime this came though before midnight that evening. Just a few snaps because the cloud to ground lightning was shooting off every few minutes instead of every few seconds. Patience it s a virtue.

Another Incredible Nebraska Skyscape. Beautiful July ambient light, against a dying thunderstorm. Nope it's not severe but it's what I do when the light is right. Plus, I was super sick... A few days away from being forced into the hospital. I'm better now, and thankful.. that's a story to come!

I honestly took extra time on these captures. I was using a new filter on my new lens. So no added color or any adjustments to the image in Photoshop on this set. Now I had to bring them through Photoshop from raw... but that's it and of course the pano's are done separately.

Also... I only had one camera...for video that evening. Otherwise you would have seen this first storm cross over and you would have seen some sweet Nebraska thunderstorm views. Just to the east southeast. July Mammatus... these are just as sweet as this video... Just captures though...These have been added to this set.

It seemed the sicker I got, the better the photography I took... It was only about 10 days till I was forced into the hospital. I shouldn't have been out. But you don't get captures like this if you don't go try to catch them...

I was sick but had a blast, and what I caught was just Awesome!

Almost a month without a good photographic storm. This day I would stay local. This storm season was coming to an end and I didn't want to miss any opportunity for full photographic effect. These cells wouldn't disappoint.

We had severe warnings on this cell. I got right underneath the base as their was some rotation but nothing ever developed on this as I followed it for several miles as it tracked north, northeast.

I have this uncanny knack to get to the right place at the right time when it comes to storms... This one was another spot on encounter. I decided to eyeball this storm and put away the radar and other electronics and just chase use the old way.

It had been a few weeks since any good photographic storms. We had Severe Thunderstorm warnings counties south of Phelps county (Located in South Central Nebraska) that afternoon.

Raced this cell and I was now in position to capture this beauty. Just a few miles north of Elm Creek on Hwy 183. This place has the best view over the valley. Worst cell phone reception ever.. even with a 4g booster I couldn't push out a signal.

A few hours after sunset the first of the storms were entering our area from the due south southwest. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said that this storm was gaining strength as if crept slowly ever so closer.

The amount of cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning was excessive. Excessive & Impressive. The video from this night says it all.

Enjoy these captures from this evening. Some of the best lightning I've caught in YEARS!
