Was quite surprised to see storms develop out in the western part of Nebraska that day. The cold front had pushed into the state by early afternoon and severe storms were forming. Severe weather watches were posted for Dawson and Custer counties. Storms were moving at 10mph and I had plenty of time to catch up to them from Kearney.
Just south of Ansley Nebraska, this particular cell was under a severe thunderstorm warning and there was good development off to the north and west. Though I was on the outer edge of the north severe cell I pulled off and got a few good captures.

Most of you know, if you follow my photostream, I'm a lightning fanatic. Since I work overnights this year, it has been extremely hard to find the time to do so.
After a long day of chasing, we made it home late afternoon. Right before midnight we had another developing cell with a good lightning display. Though when I finally got set up, the storm was weakening and and I only had time for a few captures... It was worth it... just for these few.

In September, Nebraska’s sunsets transform into breathtaking spectacles, amplified by the dramatic presence of thunderstorms and supercells. As summer’s heat begins to wane, the Great Plains remain a hotbed for dynamic weather, with warm, moist air clashing against cooler fronts to create vibrant, fiery skies. The sun dips below the horizon, painting the vast Nebraska landscape in hues of orange, pink, and purple, often intensified by towering cumulonimbus clouds. These clouds, illuminated by the fading light, glow with an ethereal quality, their edges tinged with gold as the sun’s rays refract through the atmosphere. Unpacked and gear out close to home as a non severe thunderstorm approached from the due south of Kearney Nebraska. Just on the outskirts of the city just to the east of Kearney High school .

I do so much sky photography and at that time of year when I take these, they sometimes get lost within the fold. So at the end of each year I find a few that are worthy of being posted!

We had a long drive back to home! Behind the storm that afternoon was a full lit sky of mammatus cloud. We had to wait for the sun to peek out behind the clouds but that is when the real magic happened. The sky at dusk was simply epic!
An experienced... storm chaser knows that after the storm is one of the most photogenic parts of the storm. Some of the best shots I've ever taken have been on the backside of a thunderstorm. I call them Thundersets!
Now...if your not a storm chaser and one is patient enough to wait for the base of the storm to move with the limits of the sunset light. Special things can happen, have your camera ready there is always some magic happening!
This was that experience. There is no place like Nebraska!

There were mild pulse storms that afternoon in western & central Nebraska. Some eventually became defined storms. This one rolled in from due west right at dusk's twilight.
Outflow dominate with a nice defined shelf cloud. Eventually it was severe warned as it crept ever so slowly that evening to my location.

Part of a severe weather system moving northeast out of North Central Kansas. These late afternoon Supercells developed under the perfect conditions. They were in photographic range just to the Southeast of Buffalo County. Sculptured cumulus thunderheads were way to good to pass up that afternoon.
Torrential heavy downpours, hail up to 1/2 dollar size and 3 confirmed tornadoes in Adams & Hall counties just to the east of Kearney Nebraska.

Just to the west of Odessa Nebraska...
First few shots of the day as this already severe warned storm was approaching from the northwest of my current location. Got in alignment of where I thought I had the best possible chance for pics & video. An open view with no power lines. Which is rare. Even in Nebraska.
There were actually 2 storm cells. Both were severe warned. I was on the outer boundaries of the western storm. The eastern storm was going to eventually merge with this storm & become one.
The lean or tilt in this storm meant business. Nothing to take away its energy for doing its building process. Rotation was imminent, though question was would this storm produce a tornado?

June was a tough month... Not only did I have my transmission go out on the truck. Their would be NO storm chasing for about 3 weeks. Of course its June and we did have few good storms pass though and I was disappointed that we couldn't go get em all.
Back in the saddle for this last June storm. Nice for almost end of season development. Under the base this storm no tornado was going to form due to it being undercut. Nice rotation in this cell though, and it was what we came for.

What a Day to remember...
I was just out of surgery for my left knee, I wasn't supposed to be out at all. Knee was swollen to the size of a soft ball or bigger. Wrapped & in a cast but I wasn't about to let one of the best photographic storms of the season pass me by. Mrs & Friends helped me into my truck. Gear in hand I was off!
Before I was able to get on this storm. Historically, this storm wrecked havoc on 16 counties with softball and baseball sized hail. I caught up with it just to the south of Minden Nebraska as I was traveling south. I would never get in front of it but only on the back side as it proceeded to the southeast into North Central Kansas.
From my point of view, it was one of the best photographic storm of the year in South Central Nebraska. Some incredible captures from the back side of this incredibly photogenic thunderstorm. Light & Shadow played well as the Sun peaked out at the end of this day!

Working on Spring projects with the wife. Enjoying our day together. Plans were made & I had no plans for chasing any storms even if they form.
Honestly, My time with family succeeds any other activity. I knew there were storms to the south of us this day. But again it was family time. I didn't even look on radar.
Finished our projects & went out to the front of the house and my jaw dropped!!! Literally in front of me this incredible updraft on a NON-severe warned storm. This had no warning on it, and I was dumbfounded. Asked... Wife said go get'm Tiger... Rest is History.
Storm Chasing is not always about catching a Tornado. This storm cell was already in its dying stages... Finished off this afternoon with some up close and personal shots of this dying thunderstorm!

I have this uncanny knack to get to the right place at the right time when it comes to storms... This one was another spot on encounter. I decided to eyeball this storm and put away the radar and other electronics and just chase use the old way.
It had been a few weeks since any good photographic storms. We had Severe Thunderstorm warnings counties south of Phelps county (Located in South Central Nebraska) that afternoon.
Raced this cell and I was now in position to capture this beauty. Just a few miles north of Elm Creek on Hwy 183. This place has the best view over the valley. Worst cell phone reception ever.. even with a 4g booster I couldn't push out a signal.

We had to pack up and move south via Hwy 283 South then Head due east of Hwy 89. This route takes us though Beaver City, Orleans, and eventually just north of Alma Nebraska.
Now just north of Alma Nebraska...
We didn't allow us much time to find a suitable spot for us to the base of the storm. A few things to note here.
When we chase, SAFETY is the number 1 thing that I stress to the individuals that chase with me. I have to practice what I preach.
We have to find a safe spot to pull off and get the pics, vids Once we make this choice to pull off when always include a EXIT plan before we stop. (Chasing for all these years, I've learned a very valuable lesson. Never stop unless you have an open an safe exit area when chasing severe weather
We had limited time when we stopped. Storm was approaching fast from the southwest. Where we stopped I wasn't considering how high the corn here in Nebraska in late August. We didn't get a choice to move. It was now or never. So we stopped & set up fast and got with I could with 4k @ ground level.
It was our best structure of severe weather 2021. Defined Meso... Eye Candy Structure.... What more could we ask for!

A few hours after sunset the first of the storms were entering our area from the due south southwest. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said that this storm was gaining strength as if crept slowly ever so closer.
The amount of cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning was excessive. Excessive & Impressive. The video from this night says it all.
Enjoy these captures from this evening. Some of the best lightning I've caught in YEARS!

It storm chasing go time this time of year. Another phenomenal day of storm chasing was upon us in South Central Nebraska.
We had another moderate risk day, and again, the sky was again talking to me. Best of all this was going to be a local chase day.
Now on the hunt for the storms, heading east to the next set of developing storm cells. I came across this incredible rainbow just to the south of Giltner Nebraska.

Finally severe thunderstorms moved into South Central Nebraska for the first time this year. That was a looooong wait. Yes the rest of the state has seen its fair share of this but my home turf has seen very little in 2023. Rain Yes, Severe Weather No...
So I was prepared... Not much for severity except for the small hail the winds. We had a brief, and I mean brief wall cloud form to the north of the city.

Due to my severe back injury in May... I've had to stay local this year in case I have issues. They have happened recently & I sure don't want to be 500 miles from home when my back decides to flare up. Things have happen recently which I have no control over. So I'm playing it safe with my health in 2023. Chasing only local storms this year.
To answer some of your PM questions of why I'm not chasing storms out of my local area. Have had to work on keeping healthy so I can go out & do what I do best.

The 2016 storm season is upon us here in the plains of South Central Nebraska. Thought I better get the cobwebs out of the lens and take a few different perspectives.

Mother Nature only came to play in our area for a very short time. Was expecting a much better scenario than just 1 picture. Though I know the hype when it comes to severe storms. I'll be patient. My time is coming!

Not many chase days in the month of June 2017, as this day turned out way better than expected. You never know what you might encounter on a decent moderate risk day which was mostly on the eastern side of Nebraska and Western Iowa.
These first cells were moving from the north to the south as I encountered them just to the east of Schuyler Nebraska. I didn't have to to travel to western Iowa as all the action stayed in eastern Nebraska that day. It was mostly an HP mess for most of the ride till then.
Some decent structure out in front of this cell, so you know I what I was doing!

We had to pack up and move south via Hwy 283 South then Head due east of Hwy 89. This route takes us though Beaver City, Orleans, and eventually just north of Alma Nebraska.
Now just north of Alma Nebraska...
We didn't allow us much time to find a suitable spot for us to the base of the storm.
We had limited time when we stopped. Storm was approaching fast from the southwest. Where we stopped I wasn't considering how high the corn here in Nebraska in late August. We didn't get a choice to move. It was now or never. So we stopped & set up fast and got with I could with 4k @ ground level.
It was our best structure of severe weather 2021. Defined Meso... Eye Candy Structure.... What more could we ask for!

Southwest of of Overton Nebraska...
This set of images is what I live for... Those epic moments when you finally hunted/found what your looking for. It does take a lot of patience to storm chase. The waiting, the planning, the doing. But the rewards at the end are priceless. My antlers on the wall.
Now for some storm chasers... the Holy Grail of Storm chasing is a Tornado. But not for me. It is events like this that give the full definition of Storm Chasing. It really what storm chasing Eye Candy is all about! It is the "Why" or the understanding of why I do this!
One the edge of this Nebraska Supercell I felt the AWE of Mother Nature!

Now just north of Norton Kansas, storm cells were in severe warning stages and we were in the perfect position to get some excellent captures.
This cell was building and now shifting to the southeast. Incredible cc & cg lightning was illuminating the sky.
No Stacking on this image! 60 Second exposure, mother nature did all the work. I have never caught 6 CG Strikes at one time.... This was a first for me!

I've always been told, that rainbows are special and are rare indeed. I have to believe that this is true. You simply have have to be at the right place at the right time. I was this particular day!
Soundbound on Hwy 69. Just on the outer edge of this southward moving storm. The sun was peaking through, and there wasn't a soul in either direction. Pulled over to capture a few examples of Nebraska's Majestic Nature!

When we chase, SAFETY is the number 1 thing that I stress to the individuals that chase with me. I have to practice what I preach.
We have to find a safe spot to pull off and get the pics, vids. Once we make this choice to pull off when always include a EXIT plan before we stop. (Chasing for all these years, I've learned a very valuable lesson. Never stop unless you have an open an safe exit area when chasing severe weather

Check out this Incredible Nebraska Shelf Cloud. Heading south via Hwy 15. Even after some horrible road construction, and a detour from HELL, my timing was on the spot.
Now in front of this severe warned thunderstorm. Via Hwy 92 West... I had camera in hand and video to stream this event live that afternoon. This supercell was a Photographic Beast!

This thunderstorm was becoming more defined as it strengthened.
National Weather Service had a severe warning on this cell as it was slowly moving to the east northeast. As we were east of Minden Nebraska and were finally able to pull out ahead of this cell.
We paused for a few minutes to absorb the moment!

I was getting pelted with quarter sized hail I was taking snaps as fast as I could. 70 mph winds prevented my holding the camera steady but I did get in a few good shots.
Inside the bear cage... I was in the wrong place at the right time. I didn't wimp out... I did stick around for about 30 seconds to get these few additional captures.

A few hours after sunset the first of the storms were entering our area from the due south southwest. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said that this storm was gaining strength as if crept slowly ever so closer.
The amount of cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning was excessive. Excessive & Impressive. The video from this night says it all.
Enjoy these captures from this evening. Some of the best lightning I've caught in YEARS!

Wasn't looking forward to the 3 hour drive back home. What was left of the storm was a HP mess. I sat back for about 30 minutes and let the rain push east. After I got my bearings, I was headed east.
Sun was setting. I was under the perfect light conditions. Back side of the storm, via Hwy 6/34. I couldn't have asked a better photographic opportunity.

An Epic Chase Day was upon us. Though the rest of the Nation was celebrating the Holiday. National Weather Service had us pegged for a moderate risk that afternoon & evening. Due to my injures to my back the past few months. Chasing Storms has been on the back burner... Until Now!!!
First cells of the day were in North Central Kansas. The boundary line was from North Central Kansas up to Norfolk Nebraska & a bit further north. All the action that day was going to be the east of Hastings Nebraska & South. Planned it out correctly for time & distance.
We encountered this incredible updraft structure on the back side of this storm as we were passing though Hastings Nebraska. Were were trying to catch up to it Via Hwy 6 & we eventually we did just to the east to Sutton Nebraska.
This storm was producing 2" hail so we held off a few mins to the the west of Sutton. We had perfect view of the wall cloud due southwest of the hail core. Had a nice tail but never formed.
Proceeded south to get south of revved up supercell. We got along side of it via Hwy 81 south of Geneva Nebraska. Few miles south of Strang Nebraska we got ahead of the rain core & got in sight (paralleled to this storm) of this incredible developing wall cloud under the base of this storm. It did not produce a tornado but the views from this supercell were down right spectacular.
We had to reposition ourselves a few miles south of Bruning Nebraska as this Supercell move south southeast. The video & images I caught that afternoon were worth the trip. Phenomenal Storm Captures out on the plains of South Central Nebraska on the 4th of July.
Made it home to light of some fireworks & delicious bbq. Nice end to this day with family & friends after this Epic Storm Chasing Day!

Final Shots of that evening as the intensity of this storm was strengthening. It had some wicked good outflow winds once it came a little closer.
Got quite & calm for about 10 mins then all hell broke loose. Of course you know I waited till the last minute....

36 Years ago, with a peaked curiosity, I dove feverishly into the world of storm chasing and well, the rest is history. Fast forward a few years and my current journey in storm photography & videography has unlocked a completely new life that I never imagined would exist. Oh how my adventures continue...
Mother Nature definitely orchestrated her magic on this first storm chase of the season. Warm front had positioned itself right over the state of Nebraska. Pulling in all that warm moist air from the south created the perfect conditions for severe thunderstorm development. I was on the hunt & wouldn't be denied this day.
Supercell #3
Hwy 6 westbound to Holdrege Nebraska. Where I encountered this Monster Supercell just to the west of Holdrege Nebraska.
Nicely defined structure on this storm cell as it crested almost due east towards my location.

I had a little time to kill. So I drove under this cell to get on back side of this storm. I knew that the light was perfect for ambient light.
Might as well take advantage of it before I headed south to the cells i would end up chasing that afternoon. I couldn't have asked for a better natural lighting! Thank You Mother Nature!
