Talk about being disappointed. Lightning is by far my favorite thing to capture. If you have watched my video on this day on my Facebook Link, you would find about 30 images that I didn't have focused. Talk about wanting to shoot my self in the foot. It would have been some of my best captures to date.....

I did redeem myself though. The storm was still firing off a ton of cg lightning. Refocused my lens and captured these final shots of day.

In position to watch the storm develop to the west and southwest. I had got to one of my open spaces that had quick access to the north if I had to leave fast.

This storm cell developed into a monster with quarter sized hail and 60+mph wind speeds. This was a terrific photographic beast. A dangerous but a fruitful basket of storm chasing eye candy!

South Central Nebraska, early May 2012. No chasing this day due to work late. Afternoon Storms were predicted that afternoon & evening. Slow movers they were to be.

Off work & I was in luck. The dryline had stalled right over south central Nebraska that afternoon & the explosion of billowing thunderheads erupted. Billowing picturesque Thunderheads. Some of the most photogenic cells I caught in 2012.

2017 Storm Season in south central Nebraska really hasn't been. Until this storm.

I wasn't feeling that good that afternoon. Had a touch of the crud, and energy level was way down. I honestly had no plans to chase storms that afternoon.

The storms that afternoon were moving the from east to the west. (This is RARE in Nebraska) As these storms had been brewing and raging most of the afternoon in north central Nebraska. Most of these had died and parts had reformed or backbuilded throughout late afternoon. Seen that a few of my other chaser friends from StormViewLive.com were out and streaming and these developing cells. I simply couldn't miss this....The rest is history....

Now positioned just to the west of Eustis Nebraska. In some of these captures you can see the water tower from city of Farnam. I wasn't able to get ahead the storm, though just as good, as I got right along side this monster.

Perfect timing, perfect light, and the perfect storm... what more could I ask for!!!! You Gotta Love Nebraska!

It simply was the best structured photographic beauty that I wait for each year. It is, in my own personal opinion, this set of images are my Best Captures of 2017.

This cell was a slow mover... only about 10mph almost due south. Severe warned and producing some real eye candy. Backbuilding, it was a sight to see live.

Though sunset was upon me and I was loosing light fast. Perfect timing for this set of captures!!!

It was the reason why I got into storm photography. It has taken years of practice to capture it without a lightning trigger. Patients is the Key. But when it happens you have to be ready. It doesn't stay around for very long.

Had the equipment locked and stocked. Knew the storm was coming and wala... It took til August 2021 to do but finally some incredibly good and wicked lightning!

Moved to the south to get ahead of this monster once again! TVS Warnings and Tornado Warnings were in front and back of our location as we traveled to Trenton Nebraska. Again we didn't see any tornadoes. If they were there they were rain wrapped.

We honestly should not have been in the thick of it with no visibility but that's whats called punching the core to get to the other side of the storm.

Back in front of this we had lost our warning for the storm but within 10 mins of being there another tornado warning popped up right in front of us.

Radar had indicated the tornado just to the northwest (right side of this image) but we couldn't see it due to the intensity of the rainfall. We had just a few mins before the core of the storm passed over us. These are the images before that event!

It's June, Hot Humid... It's Prime Time Storm Season...

Though we only had a 10% chance of any type of development of storm that afternoon & evening. In fact all of the storms that day were to stay in western Nebraska and move to the north out of range of South Central Nebraska. That obviously was wrong!

I had just finished putting on the 2nd coat of stain on the new deck. Friends had stopped over to check on my progress. I had been so involved on completing the task at hand I didn't notice the lighting to the south of the city.

Let it be said I was unprepared and these 2 storms that rolled though that evening were unexpected. It was the reason I was finishing the staining of the deck. Though I did have everything charged and ready to go just in case. Wrapped up what I could and covered the new patio as best I could which would be a waste of time due to it all blew away!

This is the 2nd set of storms for that evening. I got lucky and into position just to the west of the city to watch this shelf cloud from its origin to when it came overhead.

Can I say priceless. Captured this life cycle of a shelf cloud... It was a nasty bugger of a storm also. 60+mph hour winds and some torrential rain.

Day 2 of chasing the plains of Wyoming. With a good chance of seeing what we came for. We had plans in place to be in position early to catch that's days first round of severe storms in Central Wyoming.

Moving west via Hwy 26 through Torrington, Lingle, Fort Laramie, Guernsey, then north on I-25 to Glendo where we would stop to watch the scudnado form and not produce.

Packed the gear up after this event and moved south to be ahead of part 2 of that afternoon and evenings cells that were to develop shortly after this first event.

After the jaunt south to Pine Bluff Wyoming we headed to Bushnell Nebraska. About 15 miles from Pine Bluff Wyoming to watch this next storm build and eventually move west into Nebraska. We didn't want to be under the base of this storm due to the hail core. So we backed off and awaited the storm to develop right at sunset!

Next stop was just to the west of Haigler Nebraska. Where there is no cell reception ... which means no radar data and no calls. Had to do this old school, which is fine by me. I didn't have smart phones and or instant data for storms before 1995. Though my partner in training was a little concerned we had it covered!

Beautiful Nebraska Supercell structure impending into our area in Southwest Nebraska. Just over the border from the Colorado state line. Creeping slowly about 14 knots per hour. We would be in position to encounter this tornado warned storm for the 3rd time this day.

Incredibly photographic structure from top to bottom on this cell. With all of our cameras focused on this event, can you say right place at the right time!

On the northern border of Kansas I patiently awaited the last severe cells that I could chase in 2018. I was in position for another fantastic chase day. No nader... but I had some excellent structure before she went outflow dominant east of Smith Center Kansas. It was definitely worth my time that afternoon. This supercell storm was cresting to the northeast & the ambient sunset light was giving us that Nebraska Magic. Just the perfect conditions to end this day. The final shots of light & storm were dynamically beautiful.

Reminiscing, I haven't spent this many times in this location in years past. Its been the 2016 hot spot for severe storms to cross over from northern Kansas into south central Nebraska in 2016. Again I was there to capture these severe weather moments.

Its mid August and its late season for severe storms. We are in a drought and any rain helps as we get closer to harvest time. This was a beast storm. HP all the way, and I didn't get many captures from this storm but what I did get was something special.

Now just east of Red Cloud Nebraska and I was eastbound on Hwy 136.

Paused a few moments to get the radar check and to figure out if the storm behind me was going to overtake my position before I got further to the east.

Well its be close to a month since I've actually been out chasing. July 2019 in South Central Nebraska has been hot and dry... for the most part. Another reason for my absence is my trusty storm chasing truck is on her last leg. I've had transmission problems and the wheel bearings are going out on 2 of the tires. Its 20 years old and she has taken good care of me and my storm chasing adventures over the past. I'm going to have to retire her instead of putting more money into the till for her to get fixed. I have new truck being custom built for storm chasing in 2020. She has been ordered and will be picking it up in September.

Oh yeah... we have had severe storms in the State of Nebraska, both West and East throughout the month of July. By the time they would even get to our location in the South Central Region of the state....they were just rain showers. More flooding rains to the east a about a week ago 3rd time for some of the folks in the state. I'm sure the farmers are not to happy and are waiting for harvest to start.

So with that being said...I did get out just once in July. On a night that the storms were perking and it was late. Extremely tired but you all know when it comes to lightning, I don't miss a beat! Opportunities are rare this time of year and I really never miss a storm. Especially if it is close! I couldn't resist!

Mother nature gave South Central Nebraska a few days break from the constant rain. I shouldn't complain. We are close to the end of our rainy season. Though... this is Nebraska where we can have severe weather breakout anytime...as this storm cell did.

Late night, early morning cells were moving along a boundary. We only had a 30% chance of storms. Storms there were out in the Nebraska Panhandle died and the reformed about 1:00 am just to the west and northwest of Buffalo County in South Central Nebraska.

This was a photographic beast as I just a few miles to the east of Kearney. I wanted to use the city lights to illuminate the storm as it pushed to the southeast. It simply has got to be my favorite night chase of the year. Close to home and incredible structure!

Sitting just north of Elwood Nebraska on Hwy 283. Video was running as I stepped out to get some snaps of this Nebraska thunderstorm beast.

Lightning is the main reason why I chase storms. I'm fascinated by the pulses of light it produces. So by placing myself in direct line of a nasty overnight supercell... It is what I call FUN.

This was a spectacle of light & storm. Producing Cloud to Cloud Lightning almost every 3 seconds. It was by far the best night time lightning fest of 2023! So Far....

Another Freak Picturesque Nebraska July Thunderstorm. A True Photographic Storm Monster. Wicked good striations, and the scuds on the bottom of the outflow line looked like teeth.

Another Classic Outflow Dominate Nebraska Thunderstorm! 2011 Month of July has simply been over the top for storm photography. This was one of my best sets for the year.

Just to note...

My old Nikon D50 had some major issues.

Internal Lens was dirty.

It had been knocked over by the wind several times.

Had some permanent internal flares.

Tons of noise in the original captures. A few are little blurry due to the 45-50+ mph outflow winds. I couldn't keep the camera steady. Every pic here was worth it though!

It took long time to rework these images....

An Epic Chase Day was upon us. Though the rest of the Nation was celebrating the Holiday. National Weather Service had us pegged for a moderate risk that afternoon & evening. Due to my injures to my back the past few months. Chasing Storms has been on the back burner... Until Now!!!

First cells of the day were in North Central Kansas. The boundary line was from North Central Kansas up to Norfolk Nebraska & a bit further north. All the action that day was going to be the east of Hastings Nebraska & South. Planned it out correctly for time & distance.

We encountered this incredible updraft structure on the back side of this storm as we were passing though Hastings Nebraska. Were were trying to catch up to it Via Hwy 6 & we eventually we did just to the east to Sutton Nebraska.

This storm was producing 2" hail so we held off a few mins to the the west of Sutton. We had perfect view of the wall cloud due southwest of the hail core. Had a nice tail but never formed.

Proceeded south to get south of revved up supercell. We got along side of it via Hwy 81 south of Geneva Nebraska. Few miles south of Strang Nebraska we got ahead of the rain core & got in sight (paralleled to this storm) of this incredible developing wall cloud under the base of this storm. It did not produce a tornado but the views from this supercell were down right spectacular.

We had to reposition ourselves a few miles south of Bruning Nebraska as this Supercell move south southeast. The video & images I caught that afternoon were worth the trip. Phenomenal Storm Captures out on the plains of South Central Nebraska on the 4th of July.

Made it home to light of some fireworks & delicious bbq. Nice end to this day with family & friends after this Epic Storm Chasing Day!

Late July 2023...

This month of storms was just down right jaw dropping. Why not continue since we didn't have any storms in May or June! Overtime for July is the way I like it!

90% of the time of year in South Central Nebraska is Hot & Humid. It is normally the beginning of our dry season. But not in 2023.

In the path of the Jet Stream that day that forced some severe thunderstorm development over south central Nebraska. We were not excepting anything super severe but a tornado or 2 is always possible this time of year.

Gear Primed & excited about the views I'm going to get for this event that day. I knew they were going to be photogenic.

I always hunt for tornadoes, but when your storm chasing & you have done this as long as I have. One figures out...

Storm Chasing is not Always about catching a Tornado. It is the elements of the day is what I'm trying for. This day had a successful storm chasing story. There is so much more than just that one objective. So much to see & so little time to do it in. I can successfully say that I documented this storm perfectly!

Started the day around Oconto Nebraska. Severe storm cells were approaching from the northwest that afternoon. @ that time they had the best potential for what I was looking for.

Though mother nature was fickle that afternoon as this storm started to weaken. The southern most cell had plenty to work with dry air out in front of it. So got south. Now just north of Overton Nebraska & I knew I was in for a good show.

This storm sure did try to produce a tornado but in the end it came down to an Outflow Dominate Storm... No nader but the views that afternoon were EPIC!

Sun was finally peaking out... clouds were clearing. Giving us this just Jaw Dropping Nebraska Thunderset... (Thunderstorm @ Sunset)

This supercell storm was cresting to the northeast & the ambient sunset light was giving us that Nebraska Magic. Just the perfect conditions to end this day. The final shots of light & storm were dynamically beautiful.

Right on the Nebraska / Kansas Border

NWS had the severe weather events for that day were to be about 200 miles to the east of south central Nebraska. Though we still had a risk of severe weather, but with the 100 Temps and lots of moisture to work with... it was bound to happen.

Finally, after waiting for a extremely slow train crossing Hwy 136 west, we were able to get south of Red Cloud Nebraska. Met up with some other chasers and we all were going to go follow the leading severe warned cells in central Kansas. Low and behold the cell just south of Red Clouds had just went into a warning. Can you say right place.... Right Time!

This was simply the best structured cell that I have caught up this season for tornadic activity. This cell did not produce a tornado, but it had rotation, hail, and torrential rain. Eye Candy for the Storm Chaser in mind....
