Torrential rain, dime sized hail, were just part of what we received when the storm caught up with in Norton Kansas.
We packed up and headed east via Hwy 36 to junction 383. This would position us again in front of this storm cell. Again tons of cc & cg lightning were still accompanying this growing severe warned cell.

One my favorite things to do... Watch a ominous lighting intense storm come over the horizon. With continuous cloud to cloud lightning & a few cloud to ground strikes. This was one of those perfect photogenic Nebraska storms.

It storm chasing go time this time of year. Another phenomenal day of storm chasing was upon us in South Central Nebraska.
We had another moderate risk day, and again, the sky was again talking to me. Best of all this was going to be a local chase day.
The storm cell I was chasing most of the day had weakened and the boundary for severe weather was to my west. I had to get north and east via Hwy 36. Ended up parked just south of Phillips Nebraska.
This new cell had warnings on it as I was approaching from the east. Now with good rotation detected on this side of the storm. Building, and getting wound up, this storm meant business.
I was in the perfect position to capture another severe weather photographic treat....

36 Years ago, with a peaked curiosity, I dove feverishly into the world of storm chasing and well, the rest is history. Fast forward a few years and my current journey in storm photography & videography has unlocked a completely new life that I never imagined would exist. Oh how my adventures continue...
Mother Nature definitely orchestrated her magic on this first storm chase of the season. Warm front had positioned itself right over the state of Nebraska. Pulling in all that warm moist air from the south created the perfect conditions for severe thunderstorm development. I was on the hunt & wouldn't be denied this day.
I got to witness 3 very sculptured Supercells that afternoon. The first encounter was north of Franklin Nebraska. Was right along side this beast via Nebraska Hwy 136 & Hwy 10. Storm was cresting to the northeast & I had the perfect view...

Last Day of Fall 2016, as the Solstice was upon us. The colors of this sunset were Surreal! The clouds that evening were perfect for the sunset to crest its light. All the different shades were present, and I couldn't have asked for a better light and cloud mixture.
I started off the year with a fantastic sunset, I might as well get another incredible sunset in before the years end.

Mother Nature gave me the chance to get some of my best images for 2014.
This supercell was at first a very slow mover moving southeast about 9-10mph before it even reached northern Buffalo County. I had to work late and I was considering not to even go out. Though as most of you know, I couldn't resist.
Some of the best shot of the year for me in this set. Most of these captures were north of Odessa Nebraska US, and some in the city limits of Kearney,

In September, Nebraska’s sunsets transform into breathtaking spectacles, amplified by the dramatic presence of thunderstorms and supercells. As summer’s heat begins to wane, the Great Plains remain a hotbed for dynamic weather, with warm, moist air clashing against cooler fronts to create vibrant, fiery skies. The sun dips below the horizon, painting the vast Nebraska landscape in hues of orange, pink, and purple, often intensified by towering cumulonimbus clouds. These clouds, illuminated by the fading light, glow with an ethereal quality, their edges tinged with gold as the sun’s rays refract through the atmosphere. The open plains offer an unobstructed view, making the interplay of light and storm clouds a daily masterpiece, where the sinking sun seems to set the sky ablaze against the silhouette of distant fields.
For those in rural areas, watching a September supercell at sunset is an unforgettable experience. The air grows heavy with the scent of rain, and the distant rumble of thunder provides a soundtrack to the visual spectacle. Farmers and storm chasers alike pause to witness the sky’s drama, knowing that these storms can bring both vital rain and potential destruction to the region’s corn and soybean fields. The fleeting moments when the sun’s last rays pierce through breaks in the storm clouds create a sense of timelessness, connecting the observer to the raw, untamed spirit of the Plains. In Nebraska, September sunsets paired with thunderstorms and supercells are not just weather events—they’re a vivid reminder of nature’s ability to inspire wonder and respect in equal measure.

We had to move to the southwest to get back in the action as several cells were developing along the frontal boundary.
We had a good lighting show as the cells were developing just to the east of us, and the storm to the west of us was shooting off tons of cc and cg lighting.
We were fortunate to be right in the middle of the cells. We didn't stay very long due to the cells were targeting the Norton Kansas areas and north.

It has been an excellent start to the 2016 chase Season. Bonus was, that I had the day off and no commitments except for storm chasing. I was set for an Epic Day!
I ended up with well over 700 pic from this storm chasing event, but I've skimmed it down to about 100+. Truly this will become some of my best photography to date...
Finally, after a 4 1/2 drive, I was in the severe risk, or moderate zone. @ Hwy 365 North Junction, a few miles north I pulled off to get these snaps of this developing cell that would turn into the Wray Tornado that afternoon.
I truly thought I had missed the game and I was feeling pretty depressed until I saw this.... This supercell already had rotation in it and I know from all the chases over the past 20 years of chasing... the last cell to develop will be the one to watch... even if there were other cells that day that were producing tornadoes.
We had all the right ingredients for this one to work her magic. I just had to position myself to get the best shots possible....

Recovered from that old drive, I honestly thought I would never see these images ever again.
Early June.... conditions this time of year are prime for night storms. Didn't have to chase... just wake up...
It was just plain luck that I got these captures at all that night.
Ever have one of those VERY LONG DAYs... I had crashed out on the couch and about 12:30 am and my son strolled in and woke me up and said... DAD storms a brewin to the west. Sure enough... Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Southern Buffalo County with an incredible cloud to ground lightning display.
We both jumped in the Truck and went out a few blocks west outside of the city lights... We only got only a few shots as the lightning was abnormally severe.. The type that has a huge crack when it strikes. Every bolt that you see had an individual unique sound a few seconds after it has stuck.
Incredible strong positive lightning strikes.

Early August storm cells are usually non severe and with little to no precip. Though the dry air creates some of the best photographic scenarios you could ask for if you love clouds... especially storms in Nebraska.
I had the afternoon off and was ready for that afternoons chase. Camera in hand, and storms moving into northern Buffalo County from the northwest...I was ready to catch some incredible storm captures.
August has always been my month to capture some of my best pics. This set of captures was just the first of many to come!

Now just west of Orleans Nebraska. Meso on this storm was getting well defined. Definite rotation and we were under it. Pulled ahead of the storm about 5 to 6 miles to get this next set of jaw dropping images.

Once a year a pull out a few sets from years past to start of the new year. In 2024 this year I have went back & revamped one of my favorite severe storms photo shoots of 2018
Back then I over colorized & over saturated the images. Pixelated & not my best work... Images were what I wanted but not the final product. If you want to see those to compare to these remastered images... here is your Flickr Link to that set of images...
But these are Gems of Gems.. I've even added about 50+ images in this set that I wasn't able to work on back in 2018. I even made a video with the old images to kick off the 2023 season... You can watch this right here on Flickr... Click Here ** Please remember I used the old images in this video **

A wide expanse of green and purple clouds stretches across the sky above a vast field. The vibrant colors are reflected city lights painting the thunderous sky. A dramatic weather event, coming in from the due west.

3nd Chase of 2017...
Another early April moderate risk day in South Central Nebraska. Which would turn out to a bust. Storm really didn't fire till after sunset.
Waiting for the instability to fire the storms. Was in the right place, just mother nature had other plans. This particular cell was just building and didn't produce anything but some scenic cloudscapes....
Some nice Nebraska Storm Eye Candy to tide me over till the storms that evening.

These are truly My Best Lightning Captures to date!
An epic night of sunset light and storm light @ twilight. Its almost every storm chasers dreams... or at least, in my own opinion, to get along side of a storm like this, as its firing away some incredible CC & CG every few seconds. What more could you ask for...
I was that Lucky Gut that evening. Just mother nature and I. Close to home after a few long storm chasing jaunts is just fine by me. She was producing and I was capturing every incredible second of this storm.. No Forking Bolt went away that evening without me getting a snap of its presence.. lol

The 2016 storm season is upon us here in the plains of South Central Nebraska. Thought I better get the cobwebs out of the lens and take a few different perspectives.
Nice set of thunderheads off to our southeast. Nice Towers forming over northern Kansas and moving into southeast Nebraska. No chasing this day. Had to work, but this was good for an after work viewing of the storms.

It has been a slow start to severe weather season here in Nebraska 2014. June starts with Thunderstorms... Severe....
Were just north of Kearney that evening & they were moving directly on a eastern path. Northern Buffalo County in South Central Nebraska was the target area that evening.
Winds were ferocious, but it was warm & humid evening as the storm was raging just a miles due north of my location. Lightning was illuminating the night with frequent flashes within this storm.
Lower level lower wind clouds (scud clouds) were frequent. Was hard to watch the base of this storm with all of them blanketing the bottom of this storm.

2023 sure has had a strange weather pattern. Almost a whole month late to our severe weather season here in south central Nebraska. Little would I know that coming weeks I will find what I've been seeking...
This was the first severe storm with a warning to come into play. In actuality there were 2 storms. This first storm was really defined & had some good visual rotation. The storm behind it with the intense hail core would steal all of this first storm's energy....
Supercell in play... what an epic view this storm had to offer!!!

On the hunt for Severe Weather after about a month off of chasing. Though, always prepared and ready to go on another storm chasing adventure, once the storm models look favorable I was off to Eastern Colorado!
This cell was in regeneration mode and was about to produce another tornado just to the west of Wray Colorado. We had to catch up and get back in front of the base. Though the base had now expanded and was building. We got back into position as we proceeded north of Wray but the storm was violent and severe enough for us to make us turn around and head east. But before we did we witnessed some incredible outflow.
This shelf cloud was mean and nasty. Just the way I like it! It was really showing her teeth!

Check out this Incredible Nebraska Shelf Cloud. Heading south via Hwy 15. Even after some horrible road construction, and a detour from HELL, my timing was on the spot.
Now in front of this severe warned thunderstorm. Via Hwy 92 West... I had camera in hand and video to stream this event live that afternoon. This supercell was a Photographic Beast!

Back in Kearney. Underneath of what remained of this supercell in North Central Nebraska. It was dying fast. Though we had a few cells (non severe) forming close to my location as this storm was on the out.
Beautiful Nebraska Stormscapes to end this chase day!

Primed and Set for a new year of Chasing Severe Weather throughout Tornado Alley. This was close to home and not a huge jaunt across several states to find those severe storms. Instead this was just really a test run for the real thing coming soon to our neck of the woods.
Time to wrap up shop for this first chase of the year. Sun was setting fast and there wasn't much light left to capture this storm. Packed up the video gear and headed back home.
I was really enjoying this last light of the day. Cresting light blues from the storm to my south with a mammatus field above my head and more storms developing off to my west... what more could I ask for! A Nebraska Thunderset... what an awesome way to end this day!

We had a few storms that I missed that first week of June, so just to get out and get some captures was my mission on this day.
Some really good development just to the southwest of Kearney caught my eye... I was surprised to see a small pileus cap on this developing cell. It was a precedence on what was to become.

Hail core was right on top of my location. Big stones this time with over quarter sized hail. Already broke my windshield this day in 2 places... didn't want a 3rd. Had to pack up my gear and headed south to Benkelman Nebraska.
This severe warned storm cell was moving almost due south. I had positioned myself again in front of the advancing outflow.
There is something special about the landscape in southwest Nebraska. More wheat fields than corn. It was surreal. Especially with this incredible structure on this storm.
I really enjoyed the photographic opportunities this day....Some of my best storm chasing photography for 2016! Enjoy!
