Oh Yeah... Lightning Storm that evening... It came in late, and I had gear packed and ready in case a storm started to brew. Only a 30% chance but that means its gonna storm in Nebraska.

NWS had just issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Phelps & Kearney Nebraska Counties and it was moving right in my direction. I had time to get into position and wait for the show to begin! I ALWAYS have front row tickets to this type of show!

Right along side as I would eventually get south of the storm. It had more of a easterly movement than south. It was dying but still had some nice photographic view points!!!

Hwy 30 back to Kearney... and a good view of this dying LP thunderstorm. Fantastic Structure as her last moments before she would completely weaken and fade away. There is beauty in a dying thunderstorm... just have to know when and where to be to catch it!

Oh there was a creature in the clouds that evening... This storm reminded me of the "Creature Feature" Something I grew up with when I was a kid. Saturday Night was always full of freight. There was an episode where the clouds came alive and came after whoever saw them... bla bla bla

It was one of those nights where the severe storms were just south of the city. Nighttime thunderheads shooting off just an wicked amount of cloud to cloud lightning. Every few seconds we would have another display of some crystalized forked lightning.

On the Last Stormchase of the Summer. I had to make this one count. First chase in my new truck. I couldn't have asked for a better Nebraska Stormscape Scenario!

Found and open spot just to the south of Merna Nebraska. Had the perfect view and this thunderstorm was talking!

Loaded all the gear out and started my thing. This truly would become one of my best photographic outings for storms in 2020. Glad I made the effort to go. In spite I just had major surgery 3 days before!

On the hunt for Severe Weather after about a month off of chasing. Though, always prepared and ready to go on another storm chasing adventure, once the storm models look favorable I was off to Eastern Colorado!

Tornado warning had just come over about 4:20pm MDT and we were just about to intercept. We were 4 mins late to see the tornado but we did get right under the base off the storm that produced it. Strong winds and hail accompanied this as we got to the south of this rotating supercell. Up close and personal!

We had the first batch of severe storms about 100 miles south of my location on this day.

I learned a long time ago that storms in Nebraska this early in the season are...

#1 Extremely Fast Movers

#2 Dirty & Dusty

#3 Very Rare chance to view anything photogenic.

I don't chase early spring storms. I've learned my lesson & don't want to get disappointed over something I knew wasn't going to produce what I wanted. My time will come.

However, I always keep a cam handy for event like this. It was fast. Caught a few panos of these beautiful Undulatus Asperatus clouds as they rolled over the homestead here in K-town!

*** Personal Note *** Every Year... the 1st Storm of Every Year... I get a visit from the Old Man in the Storm.... Can You See Him?

I've learned a few valuable lessons over the years of chasing severe weather. One of them is to be extremely cautious of the dirt & dust that is kicked up in the early storms of the season. I spend hundreds of $$$ on keeping my lens clean. I should say lenses since I have multiple cams. Meaning I don't get my cams out for the dirt. Yes its going to happen but not again on the first storms of the year... Please note that you can see the haze of the dirt flying in on the back side of the storm it was nasty.

It was good to see the return of the first storms of the season here in South Central Nebraska. This was the same system that produce all those tornadoes in Iowa, but this was the day before. (Someone messaged me & asked why I wasn't chasing Iowa) Real reason is its Way East... Ya I could have gone but I had some other responsibilities & want to save the $ for fuel for later chase dates... There will be more storms!

While the rest of the US has seen its share of severe weather this springtime 2023. Nebraska has a very limited amount of nice weather, let alone nicer temps as spring approaches. Just last week we had a winter squall come through with 6 inches of snow. So yes there was snow still on the ground in a few places as temps reached 70 here for the first time this year.

I need to get out & grasp a few snaps before the haboob swept over the city. (Dust Storm)

Officially my first of 2023, can't wait to see what's next!

NWS had the severe weather events for that day were to be about 200 miles to the east of south central Nebraska. Though we still had a risk of severe weather, but with the 100 Temps and lots of moisture to work with... it was bound to happen.

We got north through the hail, and this storm was a brewing! Heading east now on Hwy 136 we were about 8 miles to the west of Red Cloud Nebraska and stopped just for a few mins to get these shots before the hail caught up to us again.

This was simply the best structured cell that I have caught up this season for tornadic activity. This cell did not produce a tornado, but it had rotation, hail, and torrential rain. Eye Candy for the Storm Chaser in mind....

Storm Chasing Video from that day Click Here flic.kr/p/2nhQxV5

First Moderate Risk in South

Central Nebraska & North Central Kansas.

A short jaunt down the severe weather risk area that day from Kearney Nebraska. Arrived in Alma Nebraska a tad behind schedule. The storm was already tornado warned and produced a tornado southwest of Alma. Storm was raging and I wasn't in a good place. Had to core punch this storm & headed east via Hwy 136. That's were this collection of images starts.

I was east bound on Hwy 136 that skirts the border of Nebraska / Kansas. This would take me deep into the Moderate Risk for that severe weather day. Instability was visible everywhere out in front of this storm. A Mammatus Cluster with a wall cloud was right in front of me while another supercell was producing tornadoes behind my current location.

Wicked Beautiful Supercell Structure as I got up close & personal. Especially by Franklin Nebraska where I encountered my first Tornado of 2022.

East then north out of Red Cloud Nebraska. The storms were still producing severe weather but was exiting fast out of my range. End this day with a spectacular view of the backside of the storm. A huge mammatus cloud cluster to enjoy as I was heading home!

"Stacked Plates" is storm chasers jargon for us to describe a strongly striated mesocyclone! Oh this was a B E A U T Y!

Late August 2011. This was a LP (Low Precip) Storm, and she didn't drop an ounce of rain. If anything did come down it evaporated before it hit the ground. It was so damn hot and humid and was just happy the sun was blocked out by the clouds and then this came along. Along with the severe warning it had on it a few counties north of my location as it moved south.

You can clearly see the mid-level inflow bands. Better known as striations. These were so well defined it was jaw dropping!

When the storm got close enough I couldn't really see or verify a wall cloud of any type. We had a few lowerings, but nothing significant to get me to report it. So I really can't call this a supercell. But it sure was fun one to witness!

I was seriously late the game on this storm. But I was never out of the game. I had missed a few of the other tornados that afternoon in Northern Yuma County. Coming from south to north I had to position myself correctly. Chaser Convergence was also in full swing so there were not may open areas to choose from.

For best pics of a Tornado and to be safe about it a storm such as this was moving North by Northeast... strategically, you want to be to the south east, southwest for the best light... Behind the RFD (Rear Flank Downdraft) It's all about timing, and I honestly didn't think it would produce a tornado til it was well west of my location. That was going to be the wrong guess... Though when I went due north of Wray I had a good viewing point but not in the safest location as you see.

I got lucky this day as...In my opinion, I found a perfect view, looking due south southeast. I ended up on the northwest side of the rotation. Dangerous yes...but this will eventually give me one excellent view of this tornado and all her glory.

Staying as safe as I could I wouldn't bail till it was about a mile away then I would head north again to a safer / better viewing position.

On the open plains of Nebraska...

August was a GEM month for severe storm structure. Folks... I didn't miss a beat.

Pure Eye Candy this one is. Open air supercells developing right as the dry line passed over us in South Central Nebraska.

I wasn't going to get underneath this one though it was close. I could have chased it, but I wanted to get the structure that day. Oh I got what I came for!

I had planned accordingly. Knowing that the storm was going to pass as it rapidly developed to the due east. I waited for bit under the hail core before I got into position to capture this storm.

Building Billowing Beautiful updrafts on the back side of this storm were memorizing. Perfect Supercell structure.

This Day's pressure cooker was in session. Lot's of gulf moisture to play with. With that in mind, Mother Nature had some plans for us that afternoon. Of Course, I was prepared. Knew this situation was going to give us some excellent severe weather views that afternoon. I was on the Hunt!

Alerts & Alarms were firing right after 2:00pm as I headed west from Kearney. Severe Thunderstorm warnings had been issued to my southwest by Arapahoe & Holdrege Nebraska. Coming directly from Furnas & Phelps Counties this storm was packing a heavy punch for October.

Pulled up & onto 1 of the bluffs just north of Elm Creek Nebraska. Nice view over the Platte Valley as this nasty bugger came to play! Would eventually catch 2 tornadoes this day... Which is rare. Glad I had the time to capture this event! It was a Hoot!

Another Incredible Nebraska Skyscape. Beautiful July ambient light, against a dying thunderstorm. Nope it's not severe but it's what I do when the light is right. Plus, I was super sick... A few days away from being forced into the hospital. I'm better now, and thankful.. that's a story to come!

I honestly took extra time on these captures. I was using a new filter on my new lens. So no added color or any adjustments to the image in Photoshop on this set. Now I had to bring them through Photoshop from raw... but that's it and of course the pano's are done separately.

Also... I only had one camera...for video that evening. Otherwise you would have seen this first storm cross over and you would have seen some sweet Nebraska thunderstorm views. Just to the east southeast. July Mammatus... these are just as sweet as this video... Just captures though...These have been added to this set.

It seemed the sicker I got, the better the photography I took... It was only about 10 days till I was forced into the hospital. I shouldn't have been out. But you don't get captures like this if you don't go try to catch them...

I was sick but had a blast, and what I caught was just Awesome!

Late August 2011. The storm season sometimes lasts here til mid October. Other years, were lucky to see anything severe after the 2nd week of September.

Every years is different and while I still had the chance with final August storm I grabbed my gear and stayed local as this storm was coming to me.

Non Severe, but this storm had it's moments to give, photographically speaking.

Thunderset = Cloudscapes after thunderstorm during a sunset.

Well its been a weird year for weather. No severe storms yet in 2020 to come into south central Nebraska. That alone is strange. Though after the past few years of flooding and other severe weather events. It is good to have a break from all of what mother nature has dished out to us here in the central plains of the US.

I haven't posted any new video for awhile so I thought it was time to pull out the 4k and get some practice in before our severe weather season starts... eventually. Dying thunderstorms, non severe were passing over, giving us some much needed spring moisture.

Oh the sky was talking and I couldn't resist getting this sunset. Another small set of photographic captures of this Nebraska Thunderset.

August 11, 2019 on Flickr Click Here

Darkness ascended and we had to pull off into McCook Nebraska to refill on fuel. Met up with some other storm chasers as we were all heading due east to get back in front of these strong storm cells.

The strongest positive lighting strokes I've seen this year were upon us as we moved directly south of McCook Nebraska. The supercell down in Atwood Kansas was starting to pick up steam and was heading almost due east. It was only a 30 mile jaunt to the south but by the time we would have made the haul south would have been in the thick of it and no longer in front. We decided to stop and a get a few pics just south of McCook Nebraska before we headed into south Central Nebraska.

A massive arcus or shelf cloud was pushing out in front of the boundary line and the strong positive lightning cg strikes were simply jaw dropping!

Primed and Set for a new year of Chasing Severe Weather throughout Tornado Alley. This was close to home and not a huge jaunt across several states to find those severe storms. Instead this was just really a test run for the real thing coming soon to our neck of the woods.

Time to wrap up shop for this first chase of the year. Sun was setting fast and there wasn't much light left to capture this storm. Packed up the video gear and headed back home.

I was really enjoying this last light of the day. Cresting light blues from the storm to my south with a mammatus field above my head and more storms developing off to my west... what more could I ask for! A Nebraska Thunderset... what an awesome way to end this day!

Just to the east of North Platte Nebraska. Maxwell Nebraska...

A landspout touches down over a rural landscape under a dramatic sky, where the swirling column of wind is starkly visible against intense cloud formations. The foreground features a few trees and farmland, emphasizing the stark contrast between human activity and natural phenomena.

We were not set up & riding parallel with this storm.. so only a few shots eh...

For folks that don't know the difference between a tornado & a landspout... Please Read Below!

*****

What is the Difference between a Landspout & a Tornado?

A landspout and a tornado are both rotating columns of air that can cause damage, but they differ in their formation, structure, and characteristics:

Formation:

Landspout: A landspout is a type of non-supercell tornado that forms from a growing thunderstorm or cumulus cloud without a mesocyclone (a rotating updraft within a supercell). It typically develops from the ground upward when converging surface winds create a vortex that is stretched by an updraft in a developing storm.

Tornado: A tornado usually forms from a supercell thunderstorm with a mesocyclone. It descends from the cloud base downward as the mesocyclone tightens and intensifies due to strong atmospheric dynamics, such as wind shear.

Structure and Appearance:

Landspout: Landspouts are often narrower, more rope-like, and less organized than tornadoes. They typically appear as a slender, tube-like vortex extending from the cloud base to the ground, sometimes resembling a waterspout over land.

Tornado: Tornadoes are generally wider, more robust, and can take various shapes (e.g., wedge, cone, or rope). They are often associated with a visible funnel cloud and a debris cloud at the surface due to stronger winds.

Intensity and Duration:

Landspout: Landspouts are usually weaker (EF0–EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita scale) and shorter-lived, lasting a few minutes. They cause localized, less severe damage compared to tornadoes.

Tornado: Tornadoes can range from weak (EF0–EF1) to extremely violent (EF4–EF5), with some lasting over an hour. They can cause widespread, catastrophic damage due to higher wind speeds.

Associated Weather:

Landspout: Occurs in less severe weather, often under developing thunderstorms or cumulus clouds with minimal wind shear. They are not typically associated with large-scale storm systems.

Tornado: Often occurs in severe thunderstorms, especially supercells, with strong wind shear and dynamic atmospheric conditions conducive to powerful, long-lived storms.

Detection:

Landspout: Landspouts are harder to detect on radar because they lack a mesocyclone and may not produce a distinct radar signature.

Tornado: Tornadoes from supercells often show a mesocyclone signature on Doppler radar, aiding in their detection and warning issuance.

In summary, while both are rotating columns of air that contact the ground, landspouts are weaker, shorter-lived, and form without a mesocyclone under less severe conditions, whereas tornadoes are typically stronger, longer-lasting, and associated with supercell thunderstorms and mesocyclones.

Part of a severe weather system moving northeast out of North Central Kansas. These late afternoon Supercells developed under the perfect conditions. They were in photographic range just to the Southeast of Buffalo County. Sculptured cumulus thunderheads were way to good to pass up that afternoon.

Torrential heavy downpours, hail up to 1/2 dollar size and 3 confirmed tornadoes in Adams & Hall counties just to the east of Kearney Nebraska.

Counting on some photographic opportunities on this day since I've missed out on the past few. I was lucky enough to have one nice storm cell just west of our location.

Caught up with the end of the storm where I knew there would be something good to get... A nice mammatus cluster on the back end of this storm as it exited to the northeast.

Now set and in position to catch this severe storm. It would one of the best so far of April 2019.

South of Phillipsburg Kansas just a few miles, I have my place to stop and its on East Thunder Road... I'm Serious...

Down in the valley with open sky and a few telephone poles on the left side of the road. Overall a great place to get some wide angle views as this storm approached!

Southwest of of Overton Nebraska...

This set of images is what I live for... Those epic moments when you finally hunted/found what your looking for. It does take a lot of patience to storm chase. The waiting, the planning, the doing. But the rewards at the end are priceless. My antlers on the wall.

Now for some storm chasers... the Holy Grail of Storm chasing is a Tornado. But not for me. It is events like this that give the full definition of Storm Chasing. It really what storm chasing Eye Candy is all about! It is the "Why" or the understanding of why I do this!

One the edge of this Nebraska Supercell I felt the AWE of Mother Nature!

Surreal!

Epic

Awesome!

Early season storms here in Nebraska are simply surreal. The epic beauty that surpasses the sunset's ability to crest its light against the ominous position of this storm that evening.

Sunset cresting into twilight with a huge anvil (Cumulonimbus Incus) approaching from the northwest into South Central Nebraska.

I had way over colorized saturated other things to this original set of images. So I went back & took the raw images back to their original color templates & remastered them back to the original color specs of the origin image.

I only had a few of these published when I posted them back in 2017. Here is the entire set reworked!

Mid August of 2016, and we had our share of storms, there were some good ones. But I had fallen ill and this would be last that I would get a chance to photograph, at least for that month of 2016.

Strong thunderstorms were developing from the southwest and moving almost due north northeast. Utilizing the city lights to paint the sky, I was able to capture all of the cloud to cloud lightning illuminating the interior of the storm.

A wicked bad day of severe weather in South Central Nebraska. For more information on that day... NWS Official Report.

A tornadic supercell with an Ef1 or Ef2 tornado struck the city of Kearney late afternoon. The aftermath wasn't pretty. I sure wanted to be out chasing but I was scheduled for work, and missed the entire historic event.

Power was out, but I did have the camera batteries charged. Geared up, with camera in hand after I got home from work. I took a few minutes during clean up that night to capture these incredible cloudscapes that were on the back side of the storms.

These were the final rays, the last light of the day. These clouds were truly some spectacular stormscape captures to end that day of severe weather!

Just to the west of Odessa Nebraska...

First few shots of the day as this already severe warned storm was approaching from the northwest of my current location. Got in alignment of where I thought I had the best possible chance for pics & video. An open view with no power lines. Which is rare. Even in Nebraska.

There were actually 2 storm cells. Both were severe warned. I was on the outer boundaries of the western storm. The eastern storm was going to eventually merge with this storm & become one.

The lean or tilt in this storm meant business. Nothing to take away its energy for doing its building process. Rotation was imminent, though question was would this storm produce a tornado?

This was taken just to the south of Overton Nebraska. This severe storm cell was aggressive. When I approached it was already tornado warned and it would be the start to one of the most photogenic days of 2011 for my storm photography.

What your viewing here is a classic example of what we call in storm chasing the RFD (Rear Flank Downdraft)

The rear flank downdraft or RFD is a region of dry air wrapping around the back of a mesocyclone in a supercell thunderstorm. These areas of descending air are thought to be essential in the production of many supercellular tornadoes.

Hot, Humid and Thunder Approaches. Nice thunderstorm cell just to the north of Broken Bow was sliding south into South Central Nebraska.

Gear packed and ready rumble, I slid north via Hwy 10, which was under construction. I didn't remember this when I left that afternoon and it would eventually push me out to the country roads of Northern Buffalo County Nebraska.

Severe warned and producing 3 inch hail. Severe winds were also a factor. It was a good photogenic storm to capture.

Had to get south, as this storm just popped a tor warning. I had the perfect view, and in the perfect position. Hwy 61 southbound was my best route to intercept.

I got far enough ahead of this storm. Pulled off to the side to capture this developing wall cloud. I thought I was going to be lucky enough to catch another tornado this day, but it wasn't to be. It would eventually become rain wrapped and if it did produce a tornado, I couldn't see it.

Its was a dry summer... Though hot and humid, storms were few and far between at the end of July 2016 in South Central Nebraska.

Now don't get me wrong... Nebraska had its fair share of severe weather this time of the year. Though all of it was either west or east of Central Nebraska. Or simply out of my chasing range.

Any storms that came within our vicinity would die and then rebuild east of my location. I work overnights so chasing the night storms this year were not in my or mother natures plans.

So when I had any opportunity to catch that perfect light, like this particular evening , I couldn't have asked for a better scenario of light and storm. I was just happy to get these captures!!!

A magical evening of Light and Storm....
