Forensic Evidence - A male Great-horned Owl strikes a pose while looking for an evening meal. Take a look at those mean talons with dried blood from a previous meal! Great-horned Owls are some of the most powerful raptors out there, and they have my vote as the most terrifying of raptors in North America (to prey). They are quite intimidating to me too. They feed on pretty much everything and have even been known to kill species such as Barred Owls, Red-tailed Hawks, Red-shouldered Hawks and Great Gray Owls in territorial skirmishes or predation.
The only two raptors known to regularly dispatch Great-horned Owls in territorial defense or irregular acts of predation are Golden Eagles and Bald Eagles, likely due to the massive size advantage.
A remarkable species that embodies power to me. Happy Easter, and hope the bunnies are able to stay safe from this guy!

Image taken by my friend Curt who is now retired. Curt was one of the best Forensic Investigators in the State of Queensland.
Pictures from the farm, July 2009--three-quarter view of the partially-shaved left frontal and prietal cranium of a blonde and blue-eyed girl. She is missing her body. You can see some hint of postmortem oxygenation (grave rust) around the corners of her eyes.

A discarded white glove lying on the seat of an old river medway dinghy caught my eye - the paintwork was particularly interesting.

Happy New Year!!
Here is the Forensic Assessment Unit inside a vacant psychiatric hospital. It had been just under 4 years since our first explore of the asylum when parts were still in use. Over the next few years we had visited the asylum a handful of times getting into new areas each time. This was the most secure area of the facility. Many of the people houses in this area were being assessed for criminal trials to determine if they were capable of standing trial. There were two floors of the FAU with half of each floor having cells equipped with a heavy outer wood door. Each cell had a camera for observational purposes. This photo was taken the morning after our sleep where we had secured hammocks from one cell door, across the hall to another. Quite a creepy place to spend the night!!
CSI investigators came across these remains of the victim in a wooded rest area in Shelburn Falls, Ma. DNA results are pending can you help identify the victim by looking at this beautiful feather?
Corridor inside the forensic building at Mayview State Hospital in Pennsylvania.
This building was responsible for housing the criminally insane, those guilty by reason of insanity, which is one of the reasons the building is very stark and mundane.
Sadly, this campus was demolished earlier this year.
