PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- Official U.S. Army Special Operations Command Parachute Demonstration Team, the Black Daggers, dropped in to Presidio's Soldier Field on Nov. 4 during the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center's 75th Anniversary Week celebrations. The team carried a special gift on their 6,000 foot jump, delivering a scroll announcing the award of the Joint Meritorious Unit Award to DLIFLC Commandant Col. Phillip J. Deppert. Students from the Presidio's military service units were on hand to witness the spectacle after spending the day participating in a Sports Day competition.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - Family members of Yutaka Munakata toured the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center building named in his honor with DLIFLC command historian Dr. Stephen Payne on Jan. 27. Munakata was one of the first four instructors at the Military Intelligence Service Language School starting in 1941 and served as an Army language instructor for almost four decades. After World War II he moved to Monterey with the school, which later became DLIFLC. Munakata Hall was built at the Presidio of Monterey as a general instruction building in 1984.

Spanish classical guitarist Francesc de Paula Soler and students and faculty from the Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures hosted a presentation of Garcia Lorca's poetry with musical accompaniment. Known as "Poet of the Guitar," Maestro Soler's wide international activity as a performer has brought critics to hail him as one of the most notable names of the guitar world.

The other day on the DC Metro I watched this man repeat his German lessons out loud. Not only did he have his setup perfect but he was doing all of this while standing up in the crowded train.
He told me that his brother lived in Germany and he wanted to be able to speak to his nephews.
A year ago when I was getting ready to present a paper in Spain, I, too, studied a language on my daily commutes. However, I only mouthed under my breath my vocabulary.
