Over 100 years ago our ancestors fought for King and Country. Imagine wanting to preserve your country as a sovereign nation and not wanting to be ruled over by a tyranny. The thing about autocratic regimes is that no level of control is ever enough.
I’m not a raving royalist but there is logic fighting for one’s monarch, at least as a symbol of one’s country. The Monarch of the UK upon coronation is asked, “Will you solemnly promise and swear to govern the Peoples of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland… according to their respective laws and customs? I would say that the customs of the UK include being a sovereign nation protected by sovereign armed forces.
Of course the MPs of the UK also swear allegiance to the Crown which therefore compels all MPs to serve the interests of the UK people according to their laws and customs. Parliament is not sovereign to itself in isolation to the wishes of the British people.
I just wish the UK government would not be so keen to send the serving young people of the UK around the World to fight in needless wars of aggression meddling in the affairs of other sovereign nations and seemingly not care for them on their return. Peace everyone.

I have uploaded this photo in the hope that it may be of use to others searching for their ancestors and the role they played in the First World War.
I find this memorial, which is hung on the wall of the porch in the church, particularly moving. The date that war was declared has been written on the shield on the left but the shield on the right, for the war's end date, is empty.
I know from my research that Frank Potter, my grandfather's uncle, was killed in 1916 - and two more of his brothers were to follow. It is poignant that the Roll of Honour must have been started with much gusto and as the war dragged on, perhaps it became too painful to keep it up-to-date. By the end of the war, maybe it no longer felt worth it to inscribe the date that peace was declared.
The priest of the church did not appear to know about this memorial - I asked him about it and then found it myself as he could not help. I can imagine that at the start of the war, the families hung the Roll with pride and then, perhaps, as reality was too real, it was forgotten about. Perhaps it was forgotten about until I found it in 2012.

The SS Norwood Crew Families' Commemorative Scroll.
We know of only two that are still extant. But it seems all the families received one. Those that have turned up are in the possession of the descendants of the first officer in Canada, and the cook - in Scotland.
There is no knowledge of one in my family. My GGF Lewis Morrison was survived by his wife Elizabeth Halcrow until 1933. Thereafter by my grandfather and 6 of his 7 sisters. I now have contact with families of 5 of the surviving 6 sisters - my great aunts. But of this rather precious scroll in my family - there is no memory and no record.
Of Lewis Morrison’s children; Aggie (Agnes), Bet (Elizabeth) and Lewis continued to live in Aberdeen after their mother’s death in 1933. Bella (Isabella) lived in Edinburgh, Grace lived in Coventry, and Susie (Susan) emigrated to Ontario/Canada, and Meg (Margaret) emigrated to New York.
Davidina died in infancy and may have been unofficially fostered from Grace Halcrow (Elizabeth's youngest sister) who married David Wyllie Brown, a ship's engineer' who appears to have been absent over long periods. Davidina was born when Elizabeth Halcrow would have been 43. The forename does not have any previous use in my family, and is strikingly reminiscent of David, as in David and Grace Wyllie Brown
There are probably a hundred ways I could have done this image rescue, and some of them would have given better results.
The start point was a small scroll behind glass, that I did not have direct access to. The photo file of it in its frame and card mount and including background beyond the frame, was 3Mb.
I took a tight freehand marquee of the scroll and discarded all the stained surrounds, and placed it on a new clean white background. The file was worked up for all the principle features seen, and is now saved as 83Mb jpg.
So it goes to show that one can get something for nothing!
This commemoration scroll or print also exists in the Gordon Highlanders Museum , honouring the officers of the 4th Gordons who were killed in WW1. So - - - is this an Aberdeen Council Memorial and specific to Aberdeenshire men or has it a wider context? The fact it has no presence that I can find on the Internet, suggests it was quite local. The print was designed and published by an Edinburgh and London company - McLagan & Cumming.

FOR KING & COUNTRY
Joel Smallbone (his brother Luke had to fly home to be with his pregnant wife). Aussie's living in Nashville, Tennesee... who would've thunk it. =D He does a good impression of someone with a southern accent. They performed at Calvary Chapel Spring Valley in Las Vegas - ELECTRIFYING!!
Joel reminds me of a young Ricky Martin. ;-)

FOR KING & COUNTRY CONCERT
The "VERY BEST" concert I've EVER attended!!!! If they come to your town please check them out. The entire show was electrifying and full of energy. The light show was perfect and the thing that impressed me the most was versatility of all the musicians. They could play any of the instruments.
Here's a video from another concert they did:
