Visited the Margaret Dow Towsley Sports Museum which showcases the history of the University of Michigan Wolverines Football Team. This was really cool - and I got to see the Little Brown Jug - the trophy for the winner of the Michigan-Minnesota Football game. Definitely will get back to this wonderful campus museum. Go Blue!

Dutch postage stamp issued in 1989 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB), founded in 1889.

The 75 cent stamp features a football player in action, combined with graphic lines illustrating the trajectory and technique of a kick, symbolizing a century of tactical and technical development in Dutch football. A striking example of late 20th-century sports-themed stamp design.

The cover of Soccer Star magazine, October 1960 which I found in a wee junk shop in Portrush. The two teams on the cover that week were Manchester City and Preston North End.

The Manchester City team , on the front cover features Bert Trautmann, hero of the 1956 Cup final and a twenty year old Denis Law in his debut season for the club. Law would score 23 goals before being transferred on to Torino for a British record fee of £.110, 000

Must find a 'blue' one to balance this one !

Selfie of me wearing my new Portsmouth Football Club 125th Anniversary Away shirt for season 2023 / 2024. This was Portsmouth's original colours 125 years ago. I have only seen 2 and a half games over the past few seasons and not at all this season yet. I have a couple of health problems that just make going to football difficult. Anyway I still love the club. Football / Soccer is the greatest team sport in the world and in the now distant past Portsmouth were a very good club and have been champions of England twice but sadly not in my life time.

These scans come from my rather large magazine collection. Instead of filling my house with old moldy magazines, I scanned them (in most cases, photographed them) and filled a storage area with moldy magazines. Now they reside on an external harddrive. I thought others might appreciate these tidbits of forgotten history.

Where these mural terraced houses now stand in Wilson Road, Birchfield, Birmingham (2011) is where Aston Villa Football Club played their first official game! In march 1875 Aston Villa played against a local rugby football team Aston Brook St.Mary's, the first half of the game was played using rugby rules ending 0-0. The second half was then played using football rules from the Association(Sheffield) code.Villa won the game 1-0 with the goal scored by Jack Hughes, the ball used for the game was hired out in the afternoon for 1/6d.

Villa played home games at both Wilson Road & Aston Lower Grounds up until 1876 when they moved to their first permanent home at Wellington Road, Perry Barr, & in 1888 ASTON VILLA FORMED THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE. In 1897 Villa moved to Aston Lower Grounds where they have remained ever since.

Germany lost 2-0 against Norway in the second round of the 1936 Berlin Olympics and that too in presence of Adolf Hitler. It was a major blow to the ego and prestige of the Nazis and immense embarrassment for the regime looking to use football as their propaganda tool.

Nazi philosophy believed...

In 1989 Tamworth F.C went to Wembley & played in the F.A Vase Trophy Final (the biggest game in non league football) against the Suffolk based team Sudbury Town. The result on the day was 1-1 & with no penalty shoot outs in those days for a first game draw the replay was held on the following Wednesday at Peterborough where Tamworth won 3-0. Oh Happy Days !!!!!!! ( I 'am the one sat in the middle of the wall outside of 'The Torch' pub, & i still have the scarf but not the hair or the beard ! & i never wore one of those flat caps ! )

A narrow miss from Tamworth as the ball beats the Newport keeper Lenny Pidgeley & deflects back off the underside of the bar. Newport fans look on, in this Tamworth v Newport County Blue Square Bet Premier Division game (2012/13 season),which was played at Tamworth's home ground 'The Lamb' Sat 6th October 2012. The game ended 2-1 to Newport

Heathfield Road,Lozels,Birmingham is where legend has it that Aston Villa Football Club were formed.

It is said that memberers of the Aston Villa Wesleyan Church Cricket Team met under a lamp post in 1874 & decided to form a football team with the aim of keeping fit during the winter. This was decided after watching a game in a nearby field. This photo was taken in Heathfield Road very near to Wilson Road where Villa played their first official game in 1875. Villa fans Thomas & Simon Hayward investigate.

Note the simple barrier around the pitch, behind which the 'egg' ring-road has not yet been built,it was still part of the Castle grounds & the river Anker runs right in front of the flats known locally as the 'Colditz' flats in Bolebridge Street where the Odeon cinema now is, & where the gas works are is where the Adi's shop is now !

Found this unusual 1939 GoldSmith sports supply catalog.

from my pompey annual, season 1984 - 1985... my dad took me to see the pompey players at fratton park, where i got this picture autographed by noel...

the photo was taken by murray sanders on january 1st 1985, in an amazing game in which pompey gave up a four goal lead at half time, to draw with fulham 4 - 4

also in the picture is paul parker, who went on to play for england, and leroy rosenior, who has the record for the shortist managerial reign in engish football history, 10 minutes!

Tamworth's last game of the 2012/13 season at their home ground 'The Lamb'.Tamworth needed a win to keep in the Conference Premier League.
