There's something so special about the glow of a mother-to-be! It's such a special time in life! And you know what? It's pretty amazing for the fathers as well. I remember gently pressing my head against the stomach and speaking to my unborn kids on a daily basis, so that they would know the sound of my voice long before birth. There's nothing better than experiencing parenthood, but being able to create lasting moments for other soon-to-be parents is a close second...

This is an image from my When A Man Loves A Woman book project.

The family unit has always been an important aspect of life for me personally. When I decided to take on this book project, I knew immediately there was no better place to begin than with my amazing Father-In-Law, Charles Penn.

Always leading by example of how a man should love a woman, this portrait captures Charles Penn in action, after 51 years of marriage to his wife Anita.

To all the fathers out there with daughters, show your daughter by example what to look for in a man, and when she's married, lead by example and set the mark for your son-in-law on how he should love your daughter.

It's such a privilege to meet new and interesting people through my line of work. I sincerely never get tired of it! The Ortiz family are from beautiful Puerto Rico, and though they are still learning English and I had to use Google Translate on my smart phone to communicate during the photoshoot, I quickly became aware that both Joey and Rosaeda have such huge hearts and a deep love for their little family unit.

Rosaeda is pregnant and expecting their second child together in August, and it's a little boy! They have such a beautiful little girl together and I'm certain the next addition will be devilishly handsome!

So grateful for the opportunity to have met them, to create portraits for them, and like all of my portrait customers, they too will remain great friends over the years to come!

A portrait photographer's life is grand!

"40 Days for Life" is a featured 2 part program on the Focus on the Family network, according to its website. FotF is, of course, an anti-Gay group that's been accused of a lack of intellectual integrity...something of which "40" has also been accused by it's opponents in Bryant Texas. This is guilt by association, of course, but it's "40" that proudly announced on its own website that the program being broadcast by a very well known hate group.

I confess that I don't understand the "life begins at the moment of conception" claim. Life began a very long time ago, and is continued in many species, but not all, with the process of conception. The claim that "life begins at the moment of conception" isn't supported by my Bible, either. The ancients had no idea that the human ovum existed (confirmed in the 1840s, if memory serves), so they had a very different idea of conception. They seem to have believed that life began at the moment of ejaculation, and conception was when the womb accepted the "seed" and began to form it.

If it formed a male, the womb was working perfectly. If it "formed" only females, it was terribly defective, and the woman might have been cursed, a victim of witchcraft, or was being punished by God for her sins...or her husband's sins.

Last weekend we went up to Chico to visit with Max and his family, who were also there visiting.

Although it rained most of the day, we had a great time visiting our favorite places and reminicing about the years we spent in Chico. After Max left, we took the boys to Bidwell Park to play at Caper Acres; a fun little playground for the kids to play before we headed back home.

This was a random shot where I just stuck the camera close to the grass and "blindly" took a shot. I really liked the way it turned out, so I thought I'd share.

I don't tweak shots very often, but this portrait of my oldest daughter seemed like an excellent shot for trying the Soft Focus feature within Picasa.

Romney! Giuliani! What's this I hear about you being gay-loving baby-killing stem-cell squashers?

45 MPH SPEED LIMIT sign: shot up, cut up, tricked out, "seated" and lit.

Detail from one of my shot-up roadsign photographic sculptures

So a representative of the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum www.memphisrocknsoul.org dropped off a retired/surplus chair from Hard Rock Cafe on my front porch. I had accepted a call for artists for the museum's "Musical Chair" art auction.

My "shot sign" art (see my set) had nothing to do with music, but I welcomed the challenge. I removed the seat from the chair and then spraypainted the frame/back a metallic silver with an overlay of white, which I sanded down to a chalky screen (borrowed from affected shabby chic). Then I took a fragment from a 45 MPH sign (only the number was left) that I had also shot up with .000 buckshot (12 ga.)

I misted the sign with black spraypaint, cut a couple of larger holes in the sign, spray-mounted a facsimilie of a Dusty Springfield single label (Son of a Preacher Man) over one of the large holes, then.....hell, I'm getting tired of writing all the specs. Here's the fun part abou the 35mm slide film mounted underneath the sign:

.45 Rounds pre-Millenialist (R.P.M.) portrays a hero's journey in photographs: Satan has foul plans for the Memphis in May International Festival, and we're not sure if the Illuminati are for us or against us, and whether all the Left Behind novels are just a smokescreen. At the darkest hour, one of Elvis' "helpers" dons his spangled cape and steps into the fray with the spirit of Dusty Springfield watching over him. But will they be helped, or hurt, by the mysterious Pyramid People?

The piece came with a card bearing the following DISCLAIMER:

This is an old one that I had on my blog but not on Flickr. It's such a hilarious picture. My parents were visiting me in Boston, and we came upon a Focus on the Family event with a protest outside. So here are some of the protesters (against the anti-gay Focus on the Family thing) making out. And here's my mom posing with them. You don't have to be young to be a cool liberal!
