Featured in iGoogle's Flowers of the Day on 5/1/09.

I wish you could smell the delicious, heady aroma of this flower. This shot was taken outdoors on a cloudy day with the flowers and leaves held with my left hand against a black foamboard as I clicked the shutter with my right hand. I rarely use a tripod and am blessed with steady hands.

The plant was brought from the northeast Mediterranean to Western Europe in the 16th century and was first cultivated in Austria in the 1500's. During the 17th and 18th centuries, like the tulip, it was to be found only in the collections of very rich flower collectors. Because of the hyacinth's pervasive perfume, the bulbs were exorbitantly expensive. Later, they were introduced into the United States and became popular for their beauty and scent. Source.

Box Love

Oooh that pattern-instant love. Also love that their insides are gold and not that unflattering purple.

I don't keep doll boxes unless they really wow me. These I will keep, quite a few of them actually. They will make such great backgrounds. If I have time, I will cut them out and stick them on a foamboard.

I do wish the fashion packs came in window boxes so we could see what's inside. But I'll debox most of it anyway, so not a huge deal for me.

Thank for looking! After trying the seamless white background with "Stones on White", I wanted to give my newly discovered technique a try with Max. Who wouldn't?

The setup shot is below in comments. 580EX II on stand with DIY diffuser hanging over backdrop, aiming down into the curve. The diffuser forces the light down. 430EX II on stand with small softbox camera right, aiming into scene. I kept it pretty close so I could keep my aperture lower. DIY 2 x foamboard relfector (aluminum foil side) at left, keeping light in the scene. Nelson, our whippet, being jealous in the middle. Backdrop is the rear side of a "solid" window drape (solid white).

I hope you enjoy. Have a happy Thursday!

John

I made this edit to decorate our new office building. I printed on barite-look paper, and stuck it on foam board. The complexity in the branches is kind of cool when printed large :)

31/52 - 52 Weeks of 2018

"A Study in the Color Yellow" - Series (3/4)

A continuation of the "Yellow" theme for 2018. Previously I have done a "monochromatic" background (yellow on yellow), a black background, and now a complementary color background (purple is the compliment of yellow on the color wheel). It's also a continuation of a study of yellow colored fruits and vegetables.

I decided to do something a bit more straightforward this time. The last two, I tried to be a bit more conceptual (with varying degrees of success), as well as a little wider composition. This time I decided to keep it simple by going for a bit more of a macro comp. Lighting was where I tried to get a bit fancy. Main flash came from mostly overhead, but angled in and down from camera left in a 30-inch octabox, roughly 1/16th power. Flash for background was behind subject, to camera right, gelled and gridded, aimed at black foamboard, roughly 1/4 - 1/2 power.

Additionally, this is a composite of several shots. I used a white card for fill, but moved it around a bit. Made edits to the main image, synced with the other images I chose, and loaded those into layer stacks. I then adjusted the position of the layers, then changed the blend mode of the top most layers to Lighten before making the rest of my edits.

Well actually I think this feather was from a goose! I though this was appropriate due to the amount of rain we've been having recently. I wish the fact that we are having such a rubbish summer this year was like water off a ducks back to me but to be honest it's starting to get on my nerves!

This is one of two photos I had entered in the PUDDLE 2016 Photo and Art Contest, the other being Duality, which won 3rd place! : ) The theme for this years' PUDDLE was Space: The Final Frontier.

I enjoyed veiwing everyone's creative entries which can be seen here: flic.kr/g/rWNaa

I had a lot of fun creating the photos and here's how I did it:

Inspiration: Byul's name, meaning Star.

Rhiannon is sitting in front of a background that I created, consisting of a black foamboard, pink/purple sheer glitter fabric, small LED Christmas lights (which I borrowed from my sister's tree), and sequined blue sheer fabric.

Photo Manipulation: Added starburst over hand and one bright-eye reflection, then adjusted brightness, color and added vignette.

All post processing was done in Corel PaintShop Pro X7.

Among the techniques used are the Retro Lab effect to adjust the overall color and add vignette, and also the Clone Brush tool with varying opacities to tone down the Christmas lights.

The stars in her hair are cut from garland and the outfit is from Bratz Girlz Really Rock Yasmin doll.

Doll: Byul Steampunk Project Rhiannon

I wasn't so satisfied with this setup, but was more or less pushed into it. They wanted the (colorful, perhaps distracting) background that you see here, and they directed me to use sunlight - mid day sun, that is. With the main contact showing up 45 minutes late and an urgency to photograph 16 people before their 1:30 meeting, I had to think fast with the five to ten minutes I had for setup. We opened up the garage door for the main light. The problem was that the white concrete cast "horror light" onto the subjects. I laid down some black foamboard to reduce that bad light, used a white reflector for fill, and a single speedlight to brighten the background a little. In hind sight, I wish I had hung a huge scrim (large sheet) in front of the large door, but I didn't have it with me, nor did I have time to set it up before they were ready to shoot.

As I was told a long time ago, "there are no excuses; only reasons," and 'reasons' we should be able to work with to a large degree.

Thanks Lilli for taking some time ;-)

SET 2 – Naifeh’s (former Kroger), Covington, TN

Did anybody figure it out? The item from the previous image that I was so excited to see here at Naifeh’s was this wood-slat hanging feature above the cheese case… reason being, of course, is that it’s no ordinary wood-slat hanging feature; it is, in fact, a repurposed Kroger kitchenware department wood-slat hanging feature!!! I told y’all in that linked description “to keep this thing solidly in mind for when we return in the future for our Naifeh’s post-conversion tour;” well, here we are now, with a look at how Naifeh’s very very cleverly reused this décor item and gave it a brand new life and purpose.

It really speaks a lot to their smartness of conversion tactics here that instead of trashing this piece, they decided to paint the outside gray and black (although the tell-tale wood still remains visible on the inside parts, of course), add new stick-on letters, and completely relocate it to an entirely different area of the store. Great vision and resourcefulness. After all, like most everything else, they don’t really make décor pieces like this anymore, with real wood having long since been replaced with fake foamboard… not to mention that it definitely ain’t cheap to develop new décor yourself, especially something of this quality… so obviously, the Naifehs knew a good fixture when they saw one. Props to them.

81/365 -- Skinny Jeans

Today, Kim was wearing her skinny jeans. Rarely does she agree to pose for me, this is one of those rare moments.

I will be playing golf tomorrow. I haven't played in the last 3 months. I'm sure tomorrow will be interesting (meaning I will be all over looking for my ball).

Time for my beauty sleep. Catch you all tomorrow.

Softbox behind glass with all but outer-edges blocked off with a piece of black foamboard. 2nd flash below a glass table and behind with a red gel. Both speedlights were Flashpoint R2's, triggered by Godox XPro-C on top of a Canon 80D

I really like the look of cold wax paintings. This is my first attempt at emulating that look using acrylics. From imagination.

12x12 inches (30x30 cm.) light gray Sintra PVC 3mm 1/8 inch foamboard, Golden acrylics and mediums applied with palette knife and sponge.

Drop was water and milk with red food coloring. Base was just water with teal icing coloring. Dropped at 15 1/4 inchs. Used a clear plastic dish for base and a white foamboard for backdrop.

Shot with canon 20D, shutter set on bulb, apperature at F14. Flash canon 580EX dailed to 1/16. Lens canon EFS 18-55mm zoomed to 55mm.

Left end modules complete, baseplates reinforced with foamboard and will do the same for the rest of the hangar.

Two pieces of foam board and one sheet of bristol board set up on a flat surface. A lot of balancing was involved. And a little duct tape. (Can't go wrong with duct tape!) Converted to B&W and flipped the image.

Here's another from the same experimental session with the foam board. I cut a rectangular hole out of the foam board, used a remote to activate the timer on the camera while holding the foam board with one hand, and dropped the remote onto a soft blanket on the floor. Sure was a lot easier than trying to achieve the same results with Photoshop. (^_~)

Godox V1-N camera left at 1/32 power and 45 degrees to subject. Nikon SB-800 camera right at 1/64 power and approx 22 degrees to subject. No modifiers. Natural light from large window camera right. Godox X-Pro (N) trigger. Background: black foamboard; base: switched off iPadPro.

The sewing machine set is an Our Generation set that i bought from eBay. 100% worth it. There's also an American Girl set too, it's a bit more realistic.

Everything else was whipped up by me The walls are made of foamboard, with paper and contact for the wallpaper. They're put together with pins, and so I can take them apart and flat pack them. I have quite a few of them lol. In the end i hope to make this her entire bedroom, adding another wall, and I also hope to turn the woodgrain wall into traditional Japanese ricepaper windows and a door. Hachi live in an old shrine mansion.

My new project DIY 5x4 large format camera.

All camera made with foamboard ( frame ) and cardboard ( bellows , cover panels )

some needles , cloth tape.

Still in progress

Whole costs without lens about 20 pounds.

I thought i'd set up a bit of a backdrop using black foamboard and a 'stage' using a book on top of stacked up videos and dvds to take some level pics of Bailey. He's cool, a bit too cool for photos because as soon as he picked the food he wanted and put it in his cheeks he was running around like a... like a roborovski actually lol. Very fast!..

120/365 -- Little Brother

This is the little brother. I'll introduce you to his big brother tomorrow.

Strobist info: 1x SB-800 behind subject left into two white foamboards, one front subject right and one front subject left. 1x SB-600 with snoot into background.

I don't do product but someone wanted me to shoot some photos of her tea. It wasn't until the lights came out that I finally started to feel creative.

Setup: White foamboard for the background. Jar is sitting on black plexi. Two AD-360's on either side in strip boxes for the edge lighting. They're placed behind the jar off to the sides and facing the camera but feathered. One CL-600 overhead with a 7" reflector and a 20 degree grid facing down.

a continuation of trials (and errors) of this upside down wine shot called "wine not yet sppilled" or as Sally said, "hang over"

Today a bit better results, but still.........not that good. what i changed, mostly watering down the wine 1/4 wine to 3/4 water, you will see two shades of wine in this series, the darker one was 1/2 wine and 1/2 water, no good too dark! the other version is too light, have to be in between.

I really have to go get some new plexi glass or glass pieces for bases, as the foamboards just right away look too dirty and damaged once you touch them.

sorry i have only 1 setup shot, as tere were obvious 2 different set ups but forgot to take the other one.

I was struggling with my original plan tonight, so I decided to jump in the bushes. I need to get my creativity juices flowing again.

I discovered foamboard. It's the best thing ever cause you can just pin stuff on it instead of having to glue it on (and then it's a bitch to remove). Now I just need to buy more foamboard for the floor, the back of the house and the other side wall (once my stuff finally sold that is) :B

Hanging plant from Minicler on etsy

Today I'd like to show you my miniature couch during construction : ).

I'm no furniture building expert, just an enthusiastic amateur, so don't expect perfection (isn't that boring anyway?), but a cute little piece I'm proud of.

The materials are foamboard, a light ochre /mustard beige cord fabric, wood, glue (tacky, fabric and hot glue) and paint.

Next project will be a similar and yet different couch for my mother's display - can't wait to start with that!

Pure, blatant, unapologetic camera porn. Look at it though. It's bloody gorgeous.

My new toy. No films back yet, so have yet to see if I can actually use a film camera at all.

This is the original Canonet, from 1961. It has no battery, but still manages to have an automatic shutter priority mode that works using clockwork, levers and/or a magic imp.

And it does still work. I'm not sure about indoors, it seems to come up with suggested apertures way wider than metering with the Alpha would suggest, but for outside, it's spot on, after 46 years.

The thing that amazes me about this is that is was aimed as a fairly mass market camera, and yet the manual proudly boasts that it will "keep taking pictures for a lifetime". When was the last time you saw that used to advertise a piece of consumer gadgetry?

The best batteries ever invented :)

Strobist Info:

1. Canon 600EX-RT in Lastolite 54x54 softbox to camera right at 45 degree angle to front/right of batteries. Speedlite zoomed to 35mm and fired at 1/4 or 1/8 power.

2. Canon 600EX-RT in camera hotshoe directed at white foamboard to camera left. Speedlite zoomed to 80mm and fired at 1/32 or 1/64 power.

Other info:

Batteries were placed on a piece of toughened glass painted black on the underside to remove double reflections. Behind the scene was a large sheet of black cardboard. Image was processed using DarkTable on Linux where the main alteration was to move the black point to remove some light spill on the background.

The beginning of an end

Photographed with a homemade lens made with foamboard, paper and a magnifying glass.

Apart from adjustments to the contrast and colors in Lightroom, everything else comes directly from the lens.

A simple shot to practise reflective surface.

Lighting Info:

PostProcessing:

Merged two shots to make subject in prefect focus.

I've been trying to get into RC planes recently. Long story short, my 5 yo daughter once said I should have an airplane. Can't really remember the context where that came up, but it got me thinking... I've always wanted to try it... it's about freakin' time!

A few weeks ago, as I was starting to build my first plane out of foamboard, I mentioned that she wouldn't be able to fly it. Only Daddy could. She was OK with it, but as soon as I finished mine I would have to build one for her. Which one? Dusty, of course!

I remembered the guys at FliteTest had released the FT Duster, a flying version of Dusty, so I just shrunk the plans and went from there.

And here's the result. A few pieces of foamboard, a AAA battery, a switch (scavenged...) and a tiny motor (also scavenged...). It doesn't fly... but at least it makes some wind. As agreed, she now has to paint it. Just as soon as I buy some orange paint.

This picture also served another purpose: I'm starting a blog about my adventures in the RC world! Yes! I am now a blogger! :)
