A female Holly blue showing her upper wing markings. The dark edges to the front wings are much narrower on the Male.

Visiting one of my backyard butterfly (buddleia) bushes.

I have to confess that, having spotted the flash of colour from some way off, my first thought was - "what an enormous, brightly coloured butterfly". It was only on a closer approach that I realised I was observing two crimson rose butterflies mating! Photographed in Nilaveli, near Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. This beautiful boy took his first flight to my ground orchid when he was released. Note the little dots on the lower wings, those are pheromone pouches. Only the boys have those.
