Flutist on the Roof
I stand on this roof,
Gazing upon the twilight world,
The faces of passersby,
Shrouded by veils of stars and night.
I play my song of eerie trills;
The highs,
The lows,
This sickeningly sweet lullaby,
Carrying all into the comforting embrace,
Of midnight slumber.
This swooping melody,
My warm, but shuddering breath
breathes life into the frost covered flute,
Cradled in my ice cold hands.
My breath,
My life,
Heard by all,
But me.
A German street musician in Greece.

Bamboo Forest / Arashiyama – Kyoto, Japan
Alone in time and space. That's how I feel sometimes, but I don't see it as a bad thing because I need my time to be alone. If I'm somewhere for myself like this Japanese lady in the picture - and usually outside in nature - I can rearrange my thoughts, breathe deeply and fill my soul with new strength. The power and beauty of nature helps me the most and I emerge from it strengthened with new vitality.
The days in Japan opened my heart to new encounters, wonderful nature and a fascinating culture. The time during the days of Sakura - the festival of cherry blossoms - was blessed by the warmth and kindness of many people in Japan. This photo was taken in Kyoto and its beautiful surroundings with the most impressive temples and their gardens that I have seen so far.
I was on a journey to myself in a Land of smiles and friendliness. In a Land full of helpfulness and modesty. That's how I experienced Japan and its people. It was a journey that touched me really and was thoughtful, but at the same time gave me a lot of joy and happiness.
No road is long - with a friend on the side.
Happiness comes to those who give us their smile.

The bronze ram of an Athenian trireme.
The trireme was a powerful and quick battle ship with three rows of oar-men. The ship's had 170 oars (kōpai), arranged in three rows, with one man per oar. Additionally on board there were also 10-20 marines about 5-10 archers, sailors, one helmsan, one carpenter, one flutist, a bow officer, a marine detachment and a general commander.(trierarch). In total the about 200 men .
It is The distance a trireme could travel day depended much on the weather. Generally on a good day, the ship could cover a distance between 50–60 miles in 8 hours.
In 1987 it was reconstructed in a ship-builder in Piraeus, under the instructions of historians, a naval architect and the subsea archaeology. The name of the Athenian-style trireme was Olympias.
Crewed by 170 volunteer and unexoerienced oarsmen, Olympias managed to reach the speed of 9 knots!

Flutist Danica Lee preparing to perform at the Flute Festival & Art Walk in Medicine Park, OK
Picture, if you will, having breakfast on the courtyard lawn of the Suryagarh hotel I just showed you. The air is still cool. So cool you almost forget you're in a desert.
It is a peaceful morning. Then the haunting sound of flute music begins to fill the air. It sounds like it is from a distant land far away. In fact, the flutist is sitting behind a lattice work window on the highest floor of the hotel.
As breakfast arrives, the peacocks are released to roam the courtyard. They strut about, but are very well-behaved. There was never any doubt that they would be tempted to beg for crumbs.
Forget the other hotels that say they offer unforgettable ambiance. Most are referring to snobbish gold plated adornments. The mornings at this hotel in the desert re-enacted the glorious days when trading caravans came passing through selling priceless exotic goods from all over the world.

Patápio Silva
Musician, composer and flutist
Born in Itacoara, October 22, 1880
He died in Florianópolis, 24/April/1907
Located in the creative heart of the Vila, this 94-step staircase is located between Patápio Silva and Medeiros de Albuquerque streets, next to Armazém da Cidade, near Galeria Choque Cultural. It was revitalized with tiles, reminiscent of Rio de Janeiro's colorful Escadaria Selarón, during this year's Design Weekend and was christened Escadaria Patápio in honor of the musician who names the street above.
Shrouded in mystery, on top of his tree house, the flutist plays all night long, greeting the travellers who have ventured into the heart of Sri Lanka.
Probably the best concert, I have seen in Montreal this year. The cave (as I call the former Astral theatre) was full, so we waited with my friend for 30 min outside and were let in about 15 minutes before the scheduled end. Totally worth the wait. Melanie Charles, a dynamic and versatile artist with a great voice and the band were excellent. Wished it has been longer! Fortunately, the very next day, Melanie Charles had a show with slightly different band of expats Haitians. I had made sure to be early and got a good spot and even a seat!
Melanie Charles is a Brooklyn-born singer-songwriter, actress, and flutist of Haitian descent. Charles has strong ties to her Haitian culture and is one of the most important women in Haitian music today. She performs all over the world. Her second concert did not have her name as the headliner, instead it was entitled 'Haitian Revolution Through the Jazz'. Montreal has strong Haitian Community (150,000) and the place was again filled to rafters.

There is always music in Tablao, one of the halls in the massive complex of Gran Teatro. Rumba was on the menu and large ensemble was very professional. 4 Singers, 2 trumpets, sax, trombone, bongos, drummer, piano, bass and flute. That's 13 people! They can all sing and dance. In addition there were 4 pro dancers trying to lure people on the dance floor. It took a bit of alcohol to do the job, as the evening progressed. The place was filled with locals and tourist about 50/50.

Bon...
Good...
It's been almost 3 years since I published anything on these pages, I just need a big break and to offer an image other than the usual ones.
Very few images are offered on musical instruments so, hands and a transverse flute...
I'll let you be the judge.
Oh!!!
I won't publish more than usual, maybe 3 or 4 photos per year.
You have to know how to stay humble and only publish the best you can.
I even deleted a lot of old images, which no one will look at.
What is the point of having thousands of images stored on servers, which pollute our planet indirectly and sometimes unnecessarily???

From the archives. Was digging through my Ready for Flickr folder and found this. I now prefer it to the original color version I posted back in 2015. I view it as an abstract as much as it is about architecture. Press "L" for the best view.
From the original: The Basilica of Notre Dame in old Montreal sits at the edge of a lovely open square usually filled with tourists and open-air musicians, a flutist and a guitar player at different times.

La linda Belinda is an excellent flautist and vocalist. I was lucky to seen Belinda twice at the Havana Jazz Festival, She performed at "Música es Mujer" in Teatro América, and few days later, she was featured performer in Bobby Carcasses (her musical padre) showcase of his best fifty, or there about, musical friends. Flute is not a common jazz instrument in my part of the world. I can count flautists (or flutist) with fingers on one hand. In Cuba, there is definitely more of them. Not sure who the singer with her is.

This little flautist angel in gold plastic is an element of a Christmas decoration, I removed its attachment to remain in the template, however the fixing ring remains visible on the right side of the face.
The angel measures 47x36mm from head to toe, but here only 30x36mm is visible.
Image width : 50mm.
Le titre vient de la chanson de Robert Charlebois (1969) :
The title comes from the song by Robert Charlebois (1969) :
"Si j'avais les ailes d'un ange
Je partirais pour Québec
Si j'avais des lumières sur mon bike
Je partirais pour Québec
Si j'avais plus de gazoline
Je monterais toutes les belles collines
Quand la noirceur sera venue
J'allumerais des lumières pour ma vue
Et je roule, roulerais dans la nuit
En chantant ces jolies mélodies...."

We spent some days in Kyoto, Japan. Timing was perfect for Hanami, or cherry blossom viewing. A flutist played melancholic tunes while walking through the park of To-ji, the temple in the south of Kyoto. This 120 year old cherry tree is called Fujizakura, and was transplanted from Mie Prefecture in 2006.

Explored (surprisingly), thanks for looking. Vertical compositions don't play especially well on Flickr.
