Fluid Fall muted colors on this scenic Autumn shot because of a heavy flow of water filtering the view, shot in North Carolina.
Basalt is very hard. It can stand the polishing force of the ocean well into mythical times, but human tools can quickly loosen its rigid character. The six-sided columns, broken into pieces, fit together like a geometrical puzzle and are often used to reinforce coastal dikes.
Isamu Noguchi uses his tools more subtle. Touching the surface, hammering away like a crazy woodpecker, then seeking deeper and finer, softening and polishing the form, he lays bare its inner beauty.
He does not force the material into a sculptural form. He seeks 'the brilliance of matter beneath the skin'. With that intention, basalt becomes almost fluid.
I was walking on a carpet of fallen leaves near a creek when I came up with the idea for this image. What if this carpet of leaves was to flow down the stream?. The biggest challenge was looking through my images trying to find a stream small enough to incorporate the leaves without loosing proportion and or definition (suitable for a closeup shot); then add a rock with water droplets flying into the air to cover a blurred area of the original image of the water flow, a few more leaves on the surface and rocks, and so on...(The camera settings listed belong to the stream image only)

How does the ocean see us?
I placed the GoPro underwater into the surf, and this is a screen shot from video. Things look different. Lines are loose and shapes distorted. There are sunlit bubbles and blurry blobs. Is this the carnival mirror version of us or is this the real us?
In the fluid world of the ocean, light doesn’t enter in a straight line. Everything is always in motion. Boundaries are blurry. Substances intermingle. All elements mutually yield to the power of the flow. This is the rich flow of existence.
And the sea sparkles like champagne!
