Sticks are flower buds of plumbago. Petals are rolled like round- up lollipops. One of them started opening.

Macro Mondays and Superstition

Seeing ladybugs brings luck. Killing a ladybird brings bad luck: they would cause rain if they were kicked to death.

The existing Germanic name for the beetle, Freyafugle (bird of the goddess Freya), was christianised into our ladybird or ladybird during christianisation. The animal has many names, which often refer to the animal of the gods, such as celestial creature, angel or sun biscuit.

After surviving a bitter winter, my Euphorbia aka Spurge flowers are preparing to bloom. Soon they will be covered with bright chartreuse blossoms declaring that spring is finally here - Yay!

Sometimes shrubs and low-growing flowers are so covered with spider webs that one has to wonder how many spiders, or how big is the one spider, that created the sticky trap. Those thoughts crossed my mind as I walked gingerly through the web-covered wildflowers.

This Hairy False Goldenaster grew through the cobwebs, leaving a lot of web fibers attached, adding to their own hairy stems.

Downy Woodpeckers are fairly small (6 inch length; 15cm) woodpeckers that stay with us during the winter months. Males are distinguished by the red spot on his head, which is lacking in females.

The way the light has illuminated the top bud kind of reminds me of one of these human chakra diagrams where the crown chakra of enlightenment - the Sahasrara, is lit up. It is normally depicted with a lotus flower, but I think this one does a nice impression. Perhaps on some level, the fact it has thorns adds rather than detracts.....

It's a bit of a stretch I know, I was tempted to put a star burst onit but managed some self restraint, not bad for an old fool on this day.

Glansmispel, Photinia fraseri ‘Red Robin

Full of flower buds.

From May to June the Photinia blooms with umbels of white flowers. Especially with large, older shrubs, the flowering will be exuberant, which looks beautiful. The flowers also attract butterflies and bees.
