We were on a cruise when Hurricane Dorian intensified. As a result, instead of going to Nassau, we went to Cozumel. Carnival Cruise Line extended the cruise for three days at no extra charge.
Driving home from Port Canaveral to Virginia, we actually drove into the hurricane. Because of the strong wind and rain, we stopped in Florence, SC. We were lucky enough to find a hotel.
Across from our hotel, was a staging area for utility trucks waiting to be sent to areas needing electricity restored.
This house in Florence, S.C., is at the corner of Pine and Gaillard. The structure is sound, but the details need a little work.
LAB color: Pulled in the A and B channels 10 percent. Tweaked Lightness channel slightly and sharpened in Lightness.
Given to me by the late ACL conductor and rail historian Howard S. Waddell. He told me it was found in the old C&D Florence freight depot at the corner of McQueen & Front Streets. (Although he was certainly late many times--possibly even most of the time--as a conductor, Howard is now late because he is dead, as likewise is the ACL.)
I wonder if the Rev. J. Q. Adams was a descendent of the presidents. A Google search reveals a notation in the November 1896 edition of "The Purple and Gold," a publication of the Chi Psi fraternity, that among Furman University members (class of 1879), "Rev. J. Q. Adams, of Wadesboro, N. C., has had the degree of Doctor of Divinity conferred upon him by Centre College, Kentucky." The American Baptist Yearbook of 1898 lists him as state manager for the Baptist Young People's Union, an auxiliary to the Southern Baptist Convention organized in 1895.
Although the document originated at Wadesboro, N. C., and pertained to a desk shipped from "Da," which I assume means Darlington, S. C., since it is a carbon copy I believe it might be an accounting copy sent to the auditor's office here for their records.
It's not a very attractive form, but I thought it unusual because of the hodge-podge of fonts, looks like about 10 different styles were used. The script font used in the "Arrived at" line is interesting.
