Flora Purim (1942- ) is a Brazilian jazz singer known primarily for her work in the jazz fusion style. Her six octave voice had, four times in the 1970's, earned her Down Beat magazine's Best Female Jazz Vocalist award and she has been a 2-time Grammy nominee for Best Female Jazz Performance. During the mid- to late '70s she was quite visible in the jazz world but, in the 80's, her work grew erratic and uneven. Not heard from very often in the early to mid-'90s, she, nevertheless, continued to be highly regarded in Brazilian jazz circles.

This photograph of Flora Purim was taken in 2006 at a public performance with her husband, famed jazz percussionist Airto Moreira, at Filoli Gardens in Woodside, California.

Airto Moreira was born in Itaiópolis, Brazil, into a family of folk healers, and raised in Curitiba and São Paulo. Showing an extraordinary talent for music at a young age, he became a professional musician at age 13, noticed first as a member of the samba jazz pioneers Sambalanço Trio and for his landmark recording with Hermeto Pascoal in Quarteto Novo in 1967. Shortly after, he followed his wife Flora Purim to the United States.

After moving to the US, Moreira began playing regularly with jazz musicians in New York, including the bassist Walter Booker. Through Booker, Moreira began playing with Joe Zawinul, who in turn introduced him to Miles Davis. At this time Davis was experimenting with electronic instruments and rock and funk rhythms, a form which would soon come to be called jazz fusion. Moreira was to participate in several of the most important projects of this emerging musical form. He stayed with Davis for about two years, touring and participating in the creation of the seminal fusion recording Bitches Brew (1970).

A mixed Album. Sometimes a Kind of new Age sometimes she sounds like Astrud Gilberto and some titles with Airto Moreira sounds like Airto :-) And that's not bad. The Line Up on this LP is like a Who's Who in Jazz With > Airto Moreira - Joe Henderson - Stanley Clarke - Dave Amaro and George Duke. All the upcoming Jazz Stars of the 1970s ! On the Sleeve > 1973. On the record > 1974. The Reason is - The Records Sleeve is made in the US, the yinyl is made in Holland. Fold Out Cover.

Butterfly Dreams, 1976

Some of the greatest names in Jazz perform each summer at Filoli's "Jazz at Filoli" concert series. Normally, there are six Sunday afternoon concerts that start in June and wrap up in September. They take place on the Garden Stage, once a tennis court for the Bourn's and Roth family.

Pictured, on stage to the right, is Flora Purim, a Brazilian jazz singer known mainly for her work in the jazz fusion style. Purim has a rare six octave voice and often drifts from lyrics to wordlessness without ever losing touch with the melody and rhythm.....she is awesome!!
