Construction crews have begun to clear trees and shrubs along the upper reach of the Napa Creek March 7, 2012, in Napa, Calif., in preparations for creek widening to occur as part of the Napa Creek project. The $14.8 million project, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, is a joint effort of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, the city of Napa, and the Napa Flood Control and Water Conservation District to reduce the flood risk for the city. Many of the trees taken from this site will be used later in the project, when they are anchored to the bottom of the creek bed, providing shade and suitable habitat for fish. This is where I live, Northmoor Green (Moorland), Somerset on the Somerset Levels, we are battling to save the last 14 properties at the higher end of the village. On Friday 7th February at 2.00am we were told to leave the village as the pumps at Moorland were failing and the village would be flooded. We did leave and managed to get our 4x4 out through 3ft of water but others refused to leave and we have returned with the 14 properties in this higher end of the village battling with the help of the EA to remain in our houses.

Provincial workers perform flood mitigation work including bank protection measures and rip rap development along the Cottonwood River that is currently flooding - May 13, 2011.
When we sandbag the shoulder of SR 167 to protect against Green River flooding, we don't just go out there and throw these bags on the ground. We line them all up and then wrap them like an enclosed taco in specialized plastic then sew up the top so no moisture gets in.
You see the bottom of the taco here and one bag on top.
These bags may have to remain in place for up to five years or until the Green River flood concern has passed. It's important that the bag, the material inside and the plastic can last that long exposed to wind, rain, snow and ice. ^tjh

De nieuwe kering met brug en kazemat is ontworpen door UN studio, de coupure kan bij extreem hoog water afgesloten worden door betonnen balken. Daarnaast maakt de dijk onderdeel uit van Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie.

It is difficult to depict accurately the sheer height of the bridge across the gorge on the way to Lahic in Azerbaijan. This hanging bridge reminded me of the one in Sipatan in Bohol, Philippines, which I had seen back in May 2013. But unlike the bamboo bridge in Siptan, this one is more sturdy and secured with cables. It still sways dangerously in the wind though. Before this road existed (the road we are driving on, that is), Lahic was almost completely isolated. It’s a one hour drive from a nearby town of Ismailli now, but without the road, this is a journey that could have taken days in the harsh and mountainous terrain. In fact some of the villages near Lahic are still isolated, aod one village in particular is only accessible across a narrow, rickety rope bridge spanning the gorge. The rope has now given way to aluminium and steel and solid steel cables. (Sheki, Azerbaijan, Sept. 2017)

Depoldering of Overdiep Polder, farms are relocated and built on mounds. This makes it possible for the river to overflow the polder in case of heigh waters. The dikes have been excavated.

You are probably wondering why I have a picture of a pick up here.
This WSDOT pick up truck weighs one and a half tons. This car weighs as much as ONE sandbag filled with sand placed next to the road on SR 167. Those bags are really heavy and can stop just about anything.^tjh

Redi-Rock modular wall system is an ingenious, space saving solution for the retention of earth. This big block system has the appearance of natural stone and is versatile enough to achieve height with compromising strength.
It is seen here at McPhillips (Contractors) site for the Southwater Development in Telford.
The Southwater development will transform an area of Telford town centre, running from the shopping centre to the International Centre, with the aim of creating a major regional leisure and business attraction. It will include office space, a new learning and media centre, two new hotels, bars, restaurants, cafes and shops, a leisure hub with space for a leisure pool and multi screen cinema. There will also be hundreds of homes including apartments and town houses, a community medical facility and a new Meeting Point House.
The works will prepare the area for the £250m redevelopment investment and will focus on earthworks and groundworks for the future development and construction of new Council offices, creation of new public realm space and installation of new utility services infrastructure to serve the future needs of the area

Werner Loehlein, USACE Pittsburgh District’s Water Management chief, gives an interview to Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), April 29, for its upcoming segment about the 50th anniversary of Kinzua Dam. The segment is expected to air in late 2015 or early 2016.
Authorized by the Flood Control Acts of 1936 and 1938, Kinzua Dam and Allegheny Reservoir are one of 16 flood control projects in the Pittsburgh District. The project provides complete protection for Warren, Pa., from Allegheny River flooding, and in conjunction with other projects in the District, substantially reduced flooding in the Allegheny and upper Ohio River Valleys.
The project’s flood control capabilities were dramatically demonstrated during the June 1972 floods resulting from Tropical Storm Agnes when an estimated $247 million in flood damages were prevented. Since its completion in 1965, Kinzua has prevented flood damages estimated to be in excess of $1.2 billion.
The reservoir also provides water to be released during dry periods. These releases have the effect of reducing pollution and improving the quality and quantity of water for domestic, industrial and recreation uses. Flow regulation also helps to maintain navigable depths for commercial traffic on the Allegheny and upper Ohio Rivers.
Another benefit of the Kinzua project is hydroelectric power. A power plant is operated by the First Energy Corporation. Its peak capacity is 400,000 kilowatts per hour. The Big Bend Visitor Center contains displays which illustrate the hydroelectric process. (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers photo by Carol E. Davis)
