GERMAN FLATTS, N.Y. -- Staff Sgt. Bryan Starkweather, a member of the New York Army National Guard’s 827th Engineer Company, uses a bulldozer to remove flood debris from Fords Creek here July 3. About 24 hours after being called up by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Soldiers of the unit, based in Horseheads, N.Y., began removing flood debris from Fulmer Creek and Fords Creek to stabilize the streams and prevent further flood damage. The Soldiers also restored Fords Creek to its pre-flood course, increased its flow, and cleared debris from a mile-long section of Fulmer Creek. Starkweather is from Wayne, N.Y. It's been over two years since flood waters ripped apart Dura Den, destroying a house and tearing a massive hole in the road. Thanks to Fife Council dragging the arse out of getting people in to fix the road (a pigeon in Glenrothes took priority, no doubt), the road and house lay in their damaged state until repairs started happening at the beginning of the month.

A lot has changed in two years and in that time, the residents of Dura Den and Kemback have got used to a lack of traffic coming down the road and understandably, they have mixed feelings about it reopening. However, if work had begun a couple of months after the flooding instead of a couple of years afterwards, then maybe opinion would be unanimously in favour of reopening? Personally, I'm looking forward to not having to go miles round every time I want to go to Dundee.

The works started around the 8th of December and in that time, half of the hole has been filled in and an access path has been constructed down to the house so that it can be demolished.

The photo to the left shows the filled in hole. Compare it with a photo taken shortly after the flooding to see how much progress has been made. The upper right-hand photo shows loads of unnecessary signage on approach to the works and the lower right-hand photo shows some tinsel that's been wrapped around the contractors sign. That sign is more festive than I am.

Ice cream was not spared by the flood either.

After the 2013 Colorado floods, all that remains of this home along the Big Thompson River is a stone fireplace. The home and the bridge leading up to it was washed away months ago. Even if the owners wanted to rebuild, there is no way to get to the property… yet. We found many homes that had been disconnected when their bridge was wiped out in the flood nine months ago. The more populate areas have had a new bridge put in to reconnect them with the world. This lone fireplace will just have to wait to keep someone warm again.

Months after the flooding at Lake Texoma, you can see high the flood waters had reached. The mud soaked waters had risen past the building risers and over half of the first floor of the Highport Marina management offices.
