I was like a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.

Anyhoo, this is a closeup of the riverbed stuff, showing the cords which tie the blocks together. There's a hoist thingy that they use to maneuver this stuff around in large panels, and the ends are fixed like this to create lift loops, as shown, and to bind the panel together as a cohesive unit, preventing sudden erosion/shifting of the riverbed.

In Lincoln, as it is mostly clay underfoot, preventing the river from shifting will not be easy, probably. But it's an interesting approach which seems to have some merit. You can see some bunching in the plastic woven fabric they use as a base in the wet area in the top left.

Do we have time to know? Or is time a ghost of what has already been, lingering in memory like a wisp in a boundless ocean of being? Is time an illusion we comfort ourselves with and knowledge an attempt to explain intelligence? Or is it really simpler than that?

Uh, whatever. As you can see in the foreground, they also use half blocks, presumably for filler.

Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it.

Used for flood control of the Mississippi River, it was constructed from 1929 to 1936. The structure consists of 350 bays that have 20 creosoted timbers per bay. It has been opened 9 times before this. This opening was on May 9, 2011. Here is a closer look at the bays with a very high Mississippi River in the background.

The end of the world has come! I'm still alive, Flickr is still up, but is anybody else OUT THERE!?! This nuclear ash has covered everything and the 'water' is nothing more than atomic sludge! Aaaaaaaggggghhhh!

Actually it snowed last night and this morning and there was a truly eerie light over the river! The pipes are part of the flood control system.

A delegation from Saudi Arabia visited with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District in Las Vegas July 28. Of particular interest to the group was the District's longtime partner in area flood risk management projects, the Clark County Regional Flood Control District. LA District Commander Col. Kirk Gibbs briefed the group on the size and scope of work performed by the District and Rick Leifield, chief of the Engineering Division, spoke about the Corps' work with the local sponsor. Steve Parrish, CCRFCD General Manager, provided an overview of the regional flood control system and led a tour of joint projects around the area.

This is the north end of the berm which we constructed to help in flood control at 2311 Reed Ave. Cheyenne, WY. This berm was created on the east side of the drive down dock. The drive down dock is located to the east of rain garden #2. The excess dirt from the rain garden's 319 project was used to create this berm.
