All Saints Flixborough

This Dutch Cargo Ship is seen on the River Humber at South Ferriby, She is nearly ending a Voyage from Rotterdam to Flixborough which is on the River Trent . Photo taken from a moving Bus Window ..

It’s been a while since I shot with my Tilt Shift lens; I’d forgotten how good a lens it is.

Dutch general cargo ship H&S Prudence approaches Flixborough Wharf on River Trent

An RMS Locotel 08 diesel with 4 trucks pounds up the very steep gradient from Flixborough on the eastern bank of the River Trent (just visible top left) up the Jurassic ridge to Scunthorpe.

I heard it before I saw it & careered along a footpath & through a field to get the shot. Unfortunately the field was rape seed & it had rained so I ended up with wet yellow trousers. I like to think it was worth it.

This line was a branch off the former North Lindsey Light Railway. The NNLR was built in 1907 northwards to Winteringham & Whitten on the Humber to open up the North Lincolnshire Liassic ironstone area for mining to supply the Scunthorpe steelworks.

It was later absorbed by the Great Central Railway and, on grouping, it passed to the London and North Eastern Railway. The passenger service finished in 1928 & after many years as a freight only line closed in 1951 to Winteringham. The branch is one of the last parts still in operation & connects with the Doncaster-Cleethorpes line at Frodingham.

I believe the branch to RMS’s Flixborough Wharf remains open to serve the port and chemical plant on the banks of the River Trent but I'm not sure how often it is used.

A beauty of a sunset taken from Flixborough Grange looking across to the wharf at Flixborough Stather on the River Trent.

We had a lovely sunset today over North Lincolnshire.

Is the end nigh? It felt like it, it was a weird feeling.

Some investment on the line between Dragonby Sidings and Flixborough Wharf on the 25th June 1996.

Class 20, numbered H.010, formerly 20107, passes the track gang near Normanby Park with a trip from Dragonby sidings to Flixborough Wharf with steel sections for transfer to shipping.

Although a lot of steel is still dealt with at the wharf, it no longer comes by rail, trips ending around 2012 from what I've read.

There are plans to serve a new 'Energy from Waste' facility at the wharf using the reinstated and upgraded branch line.

20107 is still in use with Locomotive Services.

On the 5th May 2015 the Dan Fighter (1988, 1,260 DWT) heads up the River Trent to Flixborough as the H&S Fairness (2012, 2,980 DWT) heads downstream from Flixborough to Duisburg. In the distance the Anita (2013, 2,570 DWT) heads to Ghent from Grove Wharf.

36 hours on from Teignmouth and there is some more lovely late evening light at 1945 as the ships are underway on the evening tide. There were 11 ships on the Trent on Tuesday night, by far the most I have ever seen, but surprisingly only four were seen underway. The 'classic' Dan Fighter was a welcome bonus though.

I was out getting some sunset shots and this lady on her horse came by and it looked good.

NCB’s Hunslet 7017 of 1971 is seen shunting wagons of coal at Whitehaven harbour in June 1980.

This loco had arrived from Granville Colliery in Shropshire, and is still in Industrial service today, being part of Harry Needle’s shunter hire fleet and more recently to be found at Flixborough Wharf.

Coal originally arrived at the harbour down the Howgill Inclined Plane but this was closed in the early 1970s following a landslip, and a conveyor was built along the trackbed to load wagons at the bottom before being transferred to ships for export to Ireland and the Isle of Man.
