This female Northern Flicker is a member of the woodpecker family and was taken at Lakes Regional Park, Fort Myers, Florida.

Thank you for stopping by, any comments and faves are really appreciated.

Red-shafed Northern Flicker high up in a tree at Willband Creek Park, Abbotsford, B.C. With the wind and rain, this was the best I could get for birds yesterday

Northern Flicker near the Boise River in Garden City, Idaho

The rain and wind paused and I headed outside with the 500mm. No, in full disclosure my husband carried the lens and tripod with the jobu/wimberly style lens holder. He worries that I’ll trip and drop the lens, punching another hole in the wall.

But this Northern Flicker kept turning his head and looking up; we had seen an eagle soar by leisurely several times. No other feathered creatures appeared after the Flicker flew.

So much for the sunny interlude and possible photos ;) I did carry my gear back by myself.

Thanks for looking. No comments necessary; thank you.

On the other hand, this is why I bought this camera.

These flickers were on the other side of the marsh.

Just caught movement to the side, turned around and clicked just before he flew away. Perfect focus on the tree, not quite on the Flicker.

Wikipedia: The northern flicker (Colaptes auratus) or common flicker is a medium-sized bird of the woodpecker family. It is native to most of North America, parts of Central America, Cuba, and the Cayman Islands, and is one of the few woodpecker species that migrate. Over 100 common names for the northern flicker are known, including yellowhammer (not to be confused with the Eurasian yellowhammer), clape, gaffer woodpecker, harry-wicket[citation needed], heigh-ho, wake-up, walk-up, wick-up, yarrup, and gawker bird. Many of these names derive from attempts to imitate some of its calls.

I haven't been that active with postings. I saw this photo stashed away in one of my folders. This flicker was tailing a group of blue jays foraging in my backyard.

picking away at the bugs in our cedar shakes....the day had been rainy and then between the dark clouds the sun came out to light him up~~~ luckily I was gardening with my camera close by....is there any other way????

Taken at Elgin Park, Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.

It's not often one of these will sit and pose for a cameo.

"Northern Flicker - Red-shafted

This is the first intergrade I have had visit my yard.

****Intergrade is where the bird has both Red-shafted and Yellow-shafted markings, in this case the bird has a red moustache typical of the red-shafted but also has the red nape crescent typical of the Yellow-shafted.

"The flicker of the candle’s flame caught our eyes"

Northern Flicker, one of my all time favorite woodpeckers. They don't visit too often and when they do, it's apparent that the Red Bellied and the Flicker do not see eye to eye.

A Northern Flicker stretching its wings after preening...

it was a treat to see this pair of northern flickers engaging in mating rituals. they were displaying to each other by fanning out their tails. He would change his posture and she would do a little dance from side to side. this image is part of the series of photos I took which started on this post and then moved on to a tree

It was fun to watch a couple of female Flickers work their way across the lawn. I expect they were just passing through as I haven't seen them since this day. I'm glad because the resident hawk would have loved them........

I first thought this was a Red Bellied Woodpecker as they are on this pole all the time and from there they fly down for some suet. But then I noticed the dark head and grabbed the camera thinking then that it was a juvenile Red Belly.... but when the camera focused I saw this fellow and two clicks and it was gone! Such a pretty bird and one I don't see very often. Anita and I and another photography friend are heading out early today, not sure where but North somewhere! LOL Have a great day everyone!

It's pretty funny when a giant Northern flicker lands on my suet feeder.

I apologize for the grainy image but it was taken through my kitchen window and was the only opportunity I got to photograph this lovely bird

I found a pair of Northern Flickers in a dispute either over territory or a mate.

It was an entertaining 15 minutes watching the hawk chase three Flickers through the trees. It didn't seem to want one for lunch but just remove them from the dead tree it was perched in.

Foraging on the ground which Flickers often do. Lots of Cottonwood fluff on the ground.

These are the rules that we break

These are the doubts we cling to
