Travel is one of the greatest joys in my life and it is something still very difficult to manage from Australia at present. My daughter's cheesy souvenir collection is an easier snapshot than my 1000s of photos to look back on.
Like many people, I mourned the loss of a big overseas adventure in 2020 and the practicalities of life mean it will be a few years before I can attempt it again. A reminder to appreciate any opportunity you have while you still have it!
The cigar box guitar is a simple chordophone that uses an empty cigar box as a resonator. The earliest had one or two strings; modern models typically have three or more. Generally, the strings are connected to the end of a broomstick or a 1×2 inch wood slat and to the cigar box resonator.

Last week's remnant from the pantry. The curds always remind me of stylised clouds or dense tree-tops. Very tasty baked with browned lardons and pasta with cheese sauce.
In this wooded area, there is lots of ponds and streams, and thus lots of water throughout the parkland. Many mallards and geese frequent the watering holes throughout this park. A person walking told me there was a family of Wood Ducks this summer.
This is a first time seeing a Wood Duck in the wild for me. It was not the usual bright and colourful patterns of the male, so it needed to be identified. This male was in the eclipse stage, or late summer plumage. The bright eye and bill is visible, as well as the white stripes on the head, and some blue on the feathers. I found it interesting to learn that they have strong claws, and can perch on trees. That is certainly evident here as this duck is perched on a fallen tree limb, at a steep angle, above the water. After this image was taken, he started to slowly walk down the fairly steep slope, back toward the water.

In good light, males have a glossy green head cut with white stripes, a chestnut breast and buffy sides. In low or harsh light, they'll look dark overall with paler sides. Females are gray-brown with white-speckled breast. In eclipse plumage (late summer), males lose their pale sides and bold stripes, but retain their bright eye and bill. Juveniles are very similar to females.
The Wood Duck is one of the most stunningly pretty of all waterfowl. Males are iridescent chestnut and green, with ornate patterns on nearly every feather; the elegant females have a distinctive profile and delicate white pattern around the eye. These birds live in wooded swamps, where they nest in holes in trees or in nest boxes put up around lake margins. They are one of the few duck species equipped with strong claws that can grip bark and perch on branches.
Wood Ducks can be found throughout the year in the U.S., with some individuals breeding in Canada, and some wintering in Mexico.

I have to thank Mother Nature for her assistance today - The windshield has been made translucent by the rain. You can see through but not!

UMBRELLA SKY
Gesehen in Mainz, Rotekopfgasse
