(Falco tinnunculus). Mrs Kestrel hatched 5 eggs near a disused Old Mill not far from my home. They have now fledged but she was still feeding them for a while as they spent most of the day on the roof of the mill practising their flying skills. This fledgling is one that managed to make off with her latest offering.
This is part of a series showing a recent fledgling practising in a field skills that will be needed as a fish hunter.
I see many new hummers that appear to have longer feathers.

Have a great week!
(Columba palumbus). I spotted two baby wood pigeons just out of their nest this morning. They are still not the prettiest of babies but I'm sure their Mum loves them!

Tawny Frogmouth youngsters. We left the nest about 4 days ago :) Thankfully the sky was a little bluer this morning. Hope they can put all the fires out soon.
Falco tinnunculus
The chicks fledge gradually when they are around four weeks old. They explore increasing distances from the nest, but return to it to roost for another couple of weeks. Adults continue to feed the young for a month after fledging, during which time they will learn to catch their own food.
Unusually for birds of prey, there is no aggression between the chicks, which tend to fly, perch and roost together even for some time after fledging.
In the autumn, kestrels readjust their territories to make best use of winter food supply.
Waited hours to see the little owlets and then they all came at once for a split second. Taken at a local site.

It's that time of year when the first broods have begun to move out of their nests. I love these usually fearless little guys, and this Northern Parula was definitely curious about us!

A fledgling is a young bird that has grown enough to acquire its initial flight feathers and is preparing to leave the nest and care for itself.
Young birds that have already left the nest but do not yet have all their adult plumage and are still fed by the parent birds for several days are also referred to as fledglings.
Swallows are handsome aerialists with deep-blue iridescent backs and clean white fronts, Tree Swallows are a familiar sight in summer fields and wetlands across northern North America.
They chase after flying insects with acrobatic twists and turns, their steely blue-green feathers flashing in the sunlight. Tree Swallows nest in tree cavities; they also readily take up residence in nest boxes. This habit has allowed scientists to study their breeding biology in detail, and makes them a great addition to many a homeowner’s yard or field.
