The word "flamingo" comes from the Spanish and Latin word "flamenco" which means fire, and refers to the bright color of the birds' feathers. Not all flamingos are brightly colored, however, and some of the birds are mostly gray or white. The strength of a flamingo's coloration comes from its diet. Younger birds also have less coloration.

The American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) as seen at the Homosassa Springs State Park, Florida.

Ndutu Lake in the southeastern Serengeti, Tanzania

There were no flamingos in Lake Manyara National Park because of flooding and high water levels. These are bad conditions for the growth of the algae on which they feed.

And on the day trip to Arusha National Park at the start of the trip it was impossible to reach the Momella Lakes after a heavy thunder storm so we did not see the flamingos there.

Obviously we were happy to find many flamingos when reaching the southeastern sector of the Serengeti.

The Lesser Flamingo is the smallest of all flamingo species and lives in Africa south of the Sahara and in northwestern India.

It can be found in alkaline lakes, salt pans and estuaries where it filters blue-green algae from water. Besides foraging in shallow water it also feeds while swimming in deep water

It remains a strange sight in the middle of winter: a group of flamingos to ankle height (yes, the ankles are at the height of the knees) in the cold water of the Grevelingenmeer. Tropical birds that strangely survive our winters in the Grevelingenmeer for Battenoord, a neighborhood on Goeree-Overflakkee near the villages Herkingen and Nieuwe-Tonge.

This is a challenge I wanted to do for a long time. Remove a zoo capture and put into black background, so for a first it came out okay, could have tweaked on it a lot longer but didnt want to completely miss out on Sliders Sunday.

The Chaxa Lagoon is an extraordinary natural basin in the middle of the desert. Early in the morning, the reflection of the dawn light colors the salt water with a pink hue. The basin, home to countless wild flamingos, marks the entrance to the Los Flamencos National Reserve.

Four flamingo species are distributed throughout the Americas, including the Caribbean, and two species are native to Africa, Asia, and Europe. Flamingos filter-feed on brine shrimp and blue-green algae as well as insect larvae, small insects, mollusks and crustaceans making them omnivores.
