FISHING ADVENTURES magazine was the only vintage men's adventure magazine that focused on fishing-themed stories. Only one issue was published, in the summer of 1955. One of the stories in it (which featured fishing GGA artwork by Rafael DeSoto) said: "Trout fishing and girls – the two most interesting things on earth." Alas, not enough readers agreed to keep the mag going after its premiere issue.

Distinguished by its iconic hump-headed profile and striking pink hue, the Australian Snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) is a treasured species amongst the angling community and an esteemed culinary delight in Australia's coastal regions.
Native to the Southern Pacific Ocean, this species is abundant in the warmer waters around Australia and New Zealand. Despite its name, the Australian Snapper is not a true snapper but is, in fact, part of the Sparidae family, which includes species such as bream.
Snapper are demersal fish, primarily inhabiting rocky reefs, gravel beds, and seagrass meadows. Juvenile snapper often seek shelter in estuaries and inshore waters, while adults favor depths between 10 and 200 meters, though they are known to venture into deeper waters.
A fascinating aspect of the Australian Snapper is its growth and lifespan. With an impressive life expectancy of up to 40 years, snapper undergo a slow growth process, gradually developing their iconic hump head as they mature. The largest recorded Snapper in Australia was an impressive 130cm in length, but more commonly, adult Snapper range between 40-70cm.
Snapper are carnivorous, feeding on a wide variety of prey including crustaceans, mollusks, and smaller fish. Their broad diet and aggressive feeding habits make them a compelling target for anglers. Popular baits include pilchards, squid, and prawns, but Snapper are known to take a variety of baitfish and soft plastics.
For those targeting Snapper, the thrill is not only in the catch but also in the fight. Known for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs, Snapper are a formidable opponent, testing both angler's gear and skill.
Beyond the sporting realm, the Australian Snapper is highly prized for its culinary value. With firm, sweet-tasting flesh, Snapper is versatile in the kitchen and features prominently in Australian seafood cuisine. Whether it's grilled, fried, or used in a traditional fish pie, Snapper is a favorite amongst seafood lovers.
Despite being a robust species, careful management is required to ensure sustainable populations of Australian Snapper. Fishery regulations, including size and bag limits, have been implemented in many regions to maintain healthy stocks. Anglers can contribute to these conservation efforts by practicing responsible fishing techniques and respecting local fishing regulations.
In conclusion, the Australian Snapper embodies much of what makes fishing such a cherished pastime in Australia. The challenge of the catch, the beauty of the species, and the reward of a delicious meal post-fishing, all contribute to the Snapper's esteemed status. As we continue to appreciate this iconic species, let us also remember our role in ensuring its continued survival for generations of anglers to come.
