This trip was to visit a friend whom was already in Bangkok, Thailand. To get to Bangkok, I used United MileagePlus redemption.

Total United mileage redemption was only 90,000 miles!
After spending 3 weeks island hoping in the South Pacific, it was time to plan flights back to the U.S. After several days of researching possible cheap United MileagePlus partner redemptions, my friend and I finally found an awesome one.

We were currently in AKL Aukland, New Zealand. However we found a cheap routing departing MEL Melbourne, Australia arriving in Washington DC.
To get to MEL - we flew:

Qantas 737 Coach Class BNE Brisbane - MEL Melbourne.
