"Our Magic" is one of the classic works in 20th century conjuring literature. It is two books in one. Nevil Maskelyne writes on the theory behind magic (one of the first treatises on this subject) and David Devant offers twelve detailed routines of magic complete with all nuances and subtleties.
David Devant (1868-1941), an English magician and film exhibitor, was a member of the Maskelyne & Cooke Company and performed regularly at the Egyptian Hall in Piccadilly, London. He is revered by magicians as an inventor and performer whose stature led to him being invited three times to participate in Royal Command Performances. He was droll, engaging and a master of grand illusion and platform magic. Among Devant’s signature routines was his “Magic Kettle,” which produced, on demand, any alcoholic beverage called for by the audience. [Source: Wikipedia]

So Ruby's my favourite Rainbow High doll from Series 1. I wish I'd ordered more from Amazon on initial release, because the first few sent were all first edition Rubys. These had much prettier face-ups with less defects and thicker hair. I ended up keeping and deboxing two, and was later dismayed to find the ones sent to New Zealand stores were all re-release Rubys.
I really wanted to display at least one "perfect" first edition Ruby still new in her box, so I resorted to Ebay. Price was 3x more than what I'd pay locally, but it's so worth it because she's absolutely gorgeous! I feel all excited and jittery every time I see her on my shelf x').
“The War of the Worlds” by H. G. Wells first appeared in 1897 as a nine-part series in the April through December issues of Pearson’s Magazine in the UK. Its first appearance in book form came from the publisher William Heinemann of London in 1898. It is one of the earliest stories that detail a conflict between mankind and an extraterrestrial race, Martians in this case. The magazine version of the story is marvelously illustrated by Warwick Goble but, unfortunately, none of these illustrations are in the book.

Readers who regard H. G. Wells as strictly a writer of science fiction are sadly mistaken. This volume collects the best of H. G. Wells’ horror tales, including chillers about monsters (“The Strange Orchid,” “The Sea Raiders,” and “In the Avu Observatory”), black magic (“Pollock and the Porroh Man”), the supernatural (“The Plattner Story”) and some that are just plain creepy (“The Apple,” “The Red Room,” and “The Story of the Late Mr. Elvesham”).

Day three of my first December Diary...
Today is my sister Lita's birthday!
She LOVES old American cars...
While I was living in London she bought a 1970 Chrysler Newport.. which she still owns.
I had spotted this Plymouth Fury on the Kings Road in Chelsea where I used to work...
so went back to take this shot for her!
The other shot on the left is Sloane Square! %-)
Better viewed large Although the old 'neg film' prints are a little fuzzy %-)

Alan Shepard, Jr. (1923 – 1998) was an American naval officer and aviator, test pilot, flag officer, one of the original NASA Mercury Seven astronauts, and businessman, who in 1961 became the second person and the first American to travel into space. This Mercury flight was designed to enter space, but not to achieve orbit. Ten years later, at age 47 and the oldest astronaut in the program, Shepard commanded the Apollo 14 mission, piloting the lander to the most accurate landing of the Apollo missions. He became the fifth and oldest person to walk on the Moon, and the only astronaut of the Mercury Seven to walk on the Moon. During the mission, he hit two golf balls on the lunar surface. "Oliver claimed by his affectionate friends." Art by George Cruikshank.
“Oliver Twist” is Dickens’ second novel and it is full of greed, corruption and dark humor. Orphan Oliver Twist starts his life in a workhouse and is sold into an apprenticeship with an undertaker. He escapes from there and travels to London where he meets the Artful Dodger, a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets, which is led by the elderly criminal Fagin.
Dickens presents an unromantic portrayal of criminals and their sordid lives, as well as exposing the cruel treatment of the many orphans in London in the mid–nineteenth century. An early example of the social novel, Dickens satirizes the hypocrisies of his time, including child labor, the recruitment of children as criminals, and the presence of street children. The novel may have been inspired by the story of Robert Blincoe, an orphan whose account of working as a child laborer in a cotton mill was widely read in the 1830s. It is likely that Dickens's own youthful experiences contributed as well. “Oliver Twist” is a good example of Dickens’ belief that the novel should do more than merely entertain.
Oliver Twist has endured as one of the most compelling child protagonists in fiction. His story has been the subject of numerous adaptations, for various media, including a highly successful musical play, “Oliver!”, and the multiple Academy Award-winning 1968 motion picture. [Source: Wikipedia]

Unlike most of Dickens’ novels, “Oliver Twist” was not issued in monthly parts. It did appear in “Bentley’s Miscellany” magazine from February 1837 through April 1839, but the three volume book edition was published complete in November 1838. The book included 24 engravings by George Cruikshank and identified the author as “Boz.” Dickens decided that he would no longer be known as “Boz,” but his decision was too late for the earliest copies, those published between November 9 and 16, 1838.

Sidney Paget is best known as the creator of the popular image of Sherlock Holmes which influenced interpretations of the detective in nearly all subsequent films, plays and books. In all, Paget illustrated one Holmes novel and 37 Holmes short stories for the publisher, George Newnes.

“The Vampyre: A Tale” was first published in the New Monthly Magazine with the false attribution to Lord Byron as the author. Ownership was promptly denied by the poet who published, with Mazeppa, his own vampire fragment. “The Vampyre” originated at the same evening’s celebrated story-telling in the Villa Diodati in Geneva, which also produced Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.” A spectacular success, “The Vampyre” went through five editions in 1819 alone and sold equally well in Europe where Byron’s denial of authorship was less well known. Although by no means the first vampire story, Polidori’s tale was the genesis of the modern vampire legend. Despite the success of his story, Polidori, Byron’s physician and always a troubled man, committed suicide less than two years later.
This guy has a pretty awesome transformation sequence - great engineering. I'm not a huge fan of Bayformers (the Michael Bay movie version of The Transformers), but I really like the Transformers: Prime show. It seems to strike a nice balance between Bayformers and G1.
I'm glad Hasbro made this Voyager Class version of Optimus, because I really didn't like the design of the Deluxe Class one... Still waiting for Megatron!

Why, yes, this 279-page book is indeed a signed, first edition copy of Monica's Story. And, yes, it is signed by Monica Lewinsky.
We keep it on a shelf in our library right between our copies of My Life by Bill Clinton and Living History by Hillary Clinton. Heh.

ENJOYING - PORTRAIT OF SHARIF RASHEED WILLIAMS
batik painting on silk 20" x 30" 2017
From the artist:
Sharif Rasheed Williams was 32 in 2009. Before he was shot and killed, he was a "happy go lucky person", according to his mother Joanne Williams. he was outgoing and with a good heart and loved his children. He loved to travel and generally enjoy life. He was proud of his red Corvette and his blue razor pit bull dogs, Christian and Dior. He took his mom to a special Frankie Beverley concert for Mothers' Day. He worked hard and played hard.
In making this portrait I wanted to included the things that Sharif loved and enjoyed and try to make it fun and colorful, as it seems that is how he lived his short life. There are names of those left behind. As Joanne pointed out to me, killing one person wounds many others. The little boy in the piece is also Sharif, a sweetie with the same smile he took to adulthood. It was a challenge to pull this all together but I felt privileged to get to know, as best I could, this man in the photos. His name in the heart at the top is the tattoo his mother Joanne got after he was gone.
From Sharif's daughter Laniyah:
My dad Sharif was very outgoing, loving, and overprotective about his "pooh". He treated me like royalty, and anytime I needed him he was there in a heartbeat. Losing you had to be the worst thing that ever happened to me. Seven years definitely was not enough time with you and it left me mentally unstable. I remember getting the news. . . worst day of my life. I was just wishing it was a all a dream. Even until this day, I wish I could've just told him that I love him one last time. My last birthday spent with [him] was Dorney Park, I think. He got mad and we left early because nobody was listening. My dad treated me like the princess I am and you will forever be in my heart. I love you and I can't wait to see you again.
My father was a man who had smiles to brighten your days. He was patient and kind and the very best friend you could ever hope for. I can't tell you daddy, how many tears I've cried since the day I was told my dad had died. It seems so impossivle even though I know it's true, everything I see around me reminds me of you. I think of you most on your birthday, father's day, and my birthday. Happy some days, sad the other, but right now I can feel you in my heart and you are always on my mind. I just wish I could have said one last goodbye.
