"On every side water-spouts, with spiral rings of vapor, spurted from the ground like the jets of a fountain."
The original French edition of “In Search of the Castaways” was published by Hetzel in 1867-1868 as “Les Enfants du Capitaine Grant” (The Children of Captain Grant). It included 170 engravings by Edouard Riou which are also present in this 1873 English-language edition.
The book tells the story of the quest for Captain Grant of the “Britannia.” After finding a bottle the captain had cast into the ocean after the “Britannia” is shipwrecked, Lord and Lady Glenarvan of Scotland contact Mary and Robert, the young daughter and son of Captain Grant, through an announcement in a newspaper. The government refuses to launch a rescue expedition, but Lord and Lady Glenarvan, moved by the children's condition, decide to do it themselves. The main difficulty is that the coordinates of the wreckage are mostly erased, and only the latitude (37 degrees) is known; thus, the expedition would have to circumnavigate the 37th parallel south. The bottle was retrieved from a shark's stomach, so it is impossible to trace its origin by the currents. Remaining clues consist of a few words in three languages. They are re-interpreted several times throughout the novel to make various destinations seem likely.
Lord Glenarvan makes it his quest to find Grant; together with his wife, Grant's children and the crew of his yacht, the Duncan, they set off for South America. An unexpected passenger in the form of French geographer Jacques Paganel (he missed his steamer to India by accidentally boarding on the Duncan) joins the search. They explore Patagonia, Tristan da Cunha Island, Amsterdam Island, and Australia (a pretext to describe the flora, fauna, and geography of numerous places to the targeted audience). They face many challenges on their journey– avalanche, hurricane, flood, tornado, erupting volcano, wolves, head-hunters, cannibals, you name it. It’s one of Verne’s most exciting adventure stories.

Suspected of having kidnapped an Indian girl and murdered her mother, this man was traced to a tiswin camp, where he was found carousing with other drinkers. Though a member of their own corps, his brother scouts, after disarming and binding him, brought him back to the post, where he was lodged in the guard house.

This 1908 whodunit is the author’s first. Rachel is a middle-aged spinster who has had custody of her orphaned niece and nephew since they were children. Halsey and Gertrude are now 20 and 24, respectively, and they talk Rachel into renting a house in the country for the summer. The house they choose belonged to a bank defaulter who had hidden stolen securities in the walls.
The first night Rachel is there, there is a mysterious trespasser and something falls down the stairs in the middle of the night. After Halsey and Gertrude arrive on the second night, there is a murder, and Halsey and the friend he’s brought to stay disappear. Halsey returns a few days later, without his friend and without an explanation, but by then other strange goings-on have occurred to the dismay of the residents.

The novelist Ernest Hemingway once remarked that “all modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn,” and other writers such as poet T. S. Eliot and African American novelist Ralph Ellison have added their acclaim. Mark Twain, the pen name of Samuel Clemens, worked for eight years on the story of an outcast white boy, Huck, and his adult friend Jim, a runaway slave, who together flee Missouri on a raft down the Mississippi River in the 1840s. The book has been controversial since the day it was published, opinions ranging from “the book is a masterpiece” to the book is “trash and suitable only for the slums.” The free-spirited and not always truthful Huck narrates the colorful stories in the book in his own coarse and ungrammatical voice. He shows a lack of respect for religion and adult authority and repeatedly uses the “n” word. Some readers view the book as satire and consider it a powerful attack on racism. Others believe it contributes to a “racially hostile environment” and are offended by the language and the portrayal of the slave Jim. In spite of it all, Huck Finn remains the Great American Novel to the many people who have read it and loved it.

Graham, the central character of the novel, awakens into a troubled world after a two-hundred year slumber, much like Rip Van Winkle. The compound interest on his bank accounts has made him the richest man in the world and a very powerful one indeed. A trust known as the White Council used Graham’s wealth to establish a vast political and economic world order, which is now much hated by the people. Word spreads that the fabled sleeper has awakened and the people demand to see him. The Council, which rules the world in his name, prefers that he remain out of the way and places him under house arrest. He is liberated by revolutionaries and he soon learns the ugly truth about this new world, which persuades him to take part in the revolution.
The novel has plenty of action which more than makes up for the author’s socialist inclinations. It has engine-driven “aeroplanes” with 600-foot wing spans and smaller, nimbler “aeropiles,” it has a revolution and a counter-revolution, and there are battles fought in the air for supremacy.

Early collectors frequently had their First Folios rebound, whether because the previous binding was damaged or destroyed or because having their own fine binding was felt to be more important than preserving the integrity of the original volume. Leading London binder Roger Payne (1739-97) rebound nearly a dozen First Folios. He is known for the high quality of his craftsmanship and the excellence of his decoration.
I've been a pretty big Bumblebee fan since 1985, not necessarily due to his kid appeal, but just because I like his design.
I'm not a huge fan of Bayformers (the Michael Bay movie version of The Transformers), and the only two movie toys I have are the Battle Blade and Battle Ops Bumblebees.
The Transformers: Prime show, on the other hand, I really like. It seems to strike a nice balance between Bayformers and G1. While this deluxe class Bumblebee isn't terribly show-accurate, I think he's still a very well designed toy.
Stay tuned for a Bumblebee family photo in the coming months ^___^
