Leni Riefenstahl was a world-famous actress, artist, photographer and film director. One of her pre-war successes was the documentary film called “Triumph of the Will,” about the 1934 Reich Party Congress in Nuremberg. Her filming expertise not only impressed Hitler but it also impressed the International Olympic Committee who commissioned her to produce a documentary about the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. Her film, titled “Olympia,” was radically different from all sporting films made before it. She chose to highlight the aesthetics of the body by filming it from every angle. The film brought about new perspectives in cinematography and still remains without equal. It pioneered many of the techniques now common in the filming of sports.
Riefenstahl experimented with anything and everything available to her. Camera operators were placed into foxholes and trenches so they could film the Olympic athletes and minimize the disruptions to their levels of concentration. She used miniature cameras in situations where a human camera operator was not a practical solution. Camera units were placed on rails and they followed the athletes around the track as they ran. Additional camera operators were allowed to roam around in the audience to get good emotional and crowd reaction shots. During diving meets, a camera operator dove alongside the diver both above and below the water. No cameramen had ever been allowed to work so close to the athletes at any other Olympics. Sports imagery rose to new aesthetic heights.
"Although the film “Olympia” has become an acknowledged classic, her book of photographs, “Schönheit im Olympischen Kampf” (Beauty in the Olympic Games), is less known but no less spectacular. Sometimes Riefenstahl relied on poses modeled on the antique Greek ideal… But far more original were her depictions of superbly athletic bodies soaring gracefully through the air and knifing effortlessly through the water. Riefenstahl applied certain devices characteristic of the new German photography – strong diagonals, tight croppings, and bird's-eye and worm's-eye views. No longer was the camera an earthbound witness; it took to the air and the water with the athletes.” (Source: William A. Ewing, “The Body”).
Riefenstahl’s book is illustrated with 273 full-page, black & white photographs with picture captions in English, German, Spanish and French.

I've been a pretty big Bumblebee fan since 1985, not necessarily due to his kid appeal, but just because I like his design.
I'm not a huge fan of Bayformers (the Michael Bay movie version of The Transformers), and Bumblebee was really the only design I was anywhere near happy with. Hence, the only two movie toys I have are the Battle Blade and Battle Ops Bumblebees.
The Transformers: Prime show, on the other hand, I really like. It seems to strike a nice balance between Bayformers and G1. While this deluxe class Bumblebee isn't terribly show-accurate, I think he's still a very well designed toy.

Including a photograph of the interior of a caravan. On the wall on the left is a "bath bush" attached to a water tank - an early shower! I'm not sure where the water would go - presumably, you out down a basin of some sort to stand in. The interior is wood panelled, with regular furniture and a hefty collection of hardback books.

Caravanning & Camping Out by J. Harris Stone
The author was the founder of The Caravan Club, in 1907. It's a very readable book, and depicts the very earliest days of caravanning when they were towed by horses and only a few hundred people (if that) had one. These early caravans bore most resemblance to the romanticised images of gypsy caravans of the past, although some looked like cottages on wheels! It's a fascinating read, and there are plenty of pictures. It evokes a lot of nostalgia for a time when there were almost no cars on the road and caravans like this could meander about the countryside and stop anywhere.
The book is old enough that there is no date in anywhere, so I searched about the net to find out about it. Google was in fact unsuccessful - it came up with a few reference to the revised 1931 edition, and an American 1914 edition, but not the one I have. To the British Library! After a few searches there, I pinned it down. It's a first edition, 1913, published by Herbert Jenkins, London (the publisher I knew, but not the date). This is the only reference I've been able to find to this edition on the net. Given that the few references to the 1931 edition I've seen are quoting $70-90 and the 1914 American editions are quoting $100 - $250, I would imagine this one is significantly more valuable... It's in pretty good condition too (although, having said that, one edge of the spine cloth has split from opening it to take the pictures :( oops! It was pretty fragile).

RARE. The last copy we have traced at auction was sold at Sotheby’s on 9 December 1999 (lot 42). LITERATURE: RISM B 3557 and BB 3557; Smith and Humphries, no.191. A revised version of Bononcini's original opera of 1715 was premiered at the King's Theatre in London in November 1720. It was one of only two London operas for which Bononcini, Handel's great London rival, published the overture and arias.

The original French edition of “In Search of the Castaways” was published by Hetzel in 1867-1868 as “Les Enfants du Capitaine Grant” (The Children of Captain Grant). It included 170 engravings by Edouard Riou which are also present in this 1873 English-language edition.
The book tells the story of the quest for Captain Grant of the “Britannia.” After finding a bottle the captain had cast into the ocean after the “Britannia” is shipwrecked, Lord and Lady Glenarvan of Scotland contact Mary and Robert, the young daughter and son of Captain Grant, through an announcement in a newspaper. The government refuses to launch a rescue expedition, but Lord and Lady Glenarvan, moved by the children's condition, decide to do it themselves. The main difficulty is that the coordinates of the wreckage are mostly erased, and only the latitude (37 degrees) is known; thus, the expedition would have to circumnavigate the 37th parallel south. The bottle was retrieved from a shark's stomach, so it is impossible to trace its origin by the currents. Remaining clues consist of a few words in three languages. They are re-interpreted several times throughout the novel to make various destinations seem likely.
Lord Glenarvan makes it his quest to find Grant; together with his wife, Grant's children and the crew of his yacht, the Duncan, they set off for South America. An unexpected passenger in the form of French geographer Jacques Paganel (he missed his steamer to India by accidentally boarding on the Duncan) joins the search. They explore Patagonia, Tristan da Cunha Island, Amsterdam Island, and Australia (a pretext to describe the flora, fauna, and geography of numerous places to the targeted audience). They face many challenges on their journey– avalanche, hurricane, flood, tornado, erupting volcano, wolves, head-hunters, cannibals, you name it. It’s one of Verne’s most exciting adventure stories.

“Life on the Mississippi” is a classic travel story by Mark Twain, which contains an account of his childhood experiences, as well as his life on the river as a steamboat pilot. It is his first-hand look at navigating the Mississippi by riverboat and the changes that came about after the Civil War. The book was written at about the same time as “Huckleberry Finn” and shares several themes with that classic. Huck Finn makes a lengthy cameo on pages 42–61, a story within the chapter detailing Huck and Jim's attempt to reach Cairo which does not appear in Huckleberry Finn, published two years later.
In September 1883, “The Atlantic Monthly” published a review of the book, in which the following was said: "The material offered by observations on the journey is various beyond enumeration, and much of it is extremely amusing. Hoaxes and exaggerations palmed off by pilots and other natives along the way upon supposed ignorant strangers; stories of gamblers and obsolete robbers; glimpses of character and manners; descriptions of scenery and places; statistics of trade; Indian legends; extracts from the comments of foreign travelers, -- all these occur, interspersed with two or three stories of either humorous or tragic import, or of both together."

It was another fun-filled weekend with Throttle Life and Automotive Rhythms’ long-term consumer engagement 2021 BMW R 18 First Edition as we canvased the DC, Maryland and Virginia area.
First up was the popular Sanctuary at Kingdom Square “Close Out Car Show” with a powerful mix of classics, luxury vehicles, super cars, new and old school muscle as well as our two-wheeled riders.
Next included an early Sunday morning ride to the suburbs of Dulles, VA for one of the area’s largest weekly enthusiasts meet-ups, dubbed the Dulles Dunkin Doughnuts Cars & Coffee. This gathering included exotics such as the infamous DeLorean along with hot rods, muscle cars, custom builds, imports, and a contingent of adventure bikes, bobbers, and sport bikes. Once again, the R 18 happened to be the stand-out.
Throughout the weekend, our R 18 garnered comments from, “now that’s how you spend your money” to “simply gorgeous lines paired with that monster 1800 powertrain.”

“The Chimes” is Dickens’ second Christmas book, the first being “A Christmas Carol.” It continues his social commentaries on the poor. Structured similarly to “A Christmas Carol,” the main character, Trotty, witnesses an alternative future through a series of visions and ultimately is given a second chance to put things right. “The Chimes” was a bestseller in its day, but has since been eclipsed by “A Christmas Carol.” “The Chimes” is illustrated with thirteen engravings by artists John Leech, John Tenniel, Richard Doyle, Daniel Maclise and Clarkson Stanfield.
In all, Dickens wrote five Christmas books: “A Christmas Carol” (1843), “The Chimes” (though dated 1845 it was released in December 1844), “The Cricket on the Hearth” (1845), “The Battle of Life” (1846), and “The Haunted Man” (1848).
After I posted the photos on this car I discovered it was an error car....no windows. I've no idea why I didn't notice before I opened it, but it went straight into a plexiglass container. Going to have to be more careful before I open these I suppose.
