When I hear the word 'Luggage' I immediately think of Terry Pratchetts Discworld books.
This picture of 'Luggage' was taken at the National Railway Museum in York,.
The lucky passengers aboard this exclusively First Class train, the 11.18am Skipton - Carlisle summer 'Staycation Express', have the opportunity to be fed and watered in comfort while taking in the stunning Pennine scenery as they ride along the roof of England. A lordly experience indeed!
For many of the farmers up here - in a landscape generally only good enough to support livestock, yielding often thin margins with long working hours and enduring some of the toughest winters in the land - it's a rather different story. But then at least there's the compensation of not being hostage to frequent zoom meetings, or the boss hollering down the phone. Such is life.
This shot was taken from the exact same spot as the previous upload, and maybe even the same step on the Lunds footbridge. Typically the hint of sun present for 46115 had well and truly disappeared in the half-hour I sat waiting for this one, but I liked the composition enough to give it a go for the HST.
Closer inspection just top-left of the HST cab reveals what I believe to be Moorland Cottage (in white) stood on the lower slopes of Mossale Moor. The A684 from Sedbergh to Hawes undulates just in front of it. Just below the cottage, and to the right, can be seen the embankment that used to carry the railway line from Garsdale station to Hawes, Redmire and, ultimately Northallerton.
The circa 8 mile section of line from Garsdale to Hawes closed completely in 1959, and track eventually lifted, but proposals have been put forward recently to re-open the route, install a regular passenger service, and so link Hawes to the rest of the UK network once again. I'd certainly be up for a ride to the fleshpots (or more likely coffee shops) of this rather quaint Yorkshire Dales town.
For the record: 43058 nearest the camera with 43059 tailing.

First Class by Xu Bing as part of the Allure of Matter, Material Art from China exhibition at the Smart Museum on the South Side of Chicago.
As a vegan entering this room, I was immediately put off by what first appeared to be a huge tiger rug of some sort. What this actually is instead is an arrangement of cigarettes.

Getting close to flying, these birds breed in the winter these young owls were probably born in January.
Yes, it is mine...you know how you buy that piece of clothing in a foreign country because it looks so right there but on returning home you realize you will never wear it.
Well one year I was in London in January when Harrods had their crazy clearance sales, and the hat was just so fascinating. The next day the reality of packing it for the return trip hit me and I finally had to give up and wear it home.
This is where it all paid off. While I was waiting to board, the gate counter called me up and asked if I would mind being bumped to FIRST CLASS...not Business, but FIRST CLASS. Would I mind??? Well what an eye opener to see how the privileged travel. Most of my fellow first classer's were a rock band and their leggy blonde girlfriends, but it didn't interfere with my best flight ever (and I have been flying internationally since I was 7). It had to be the HAT! So every now and then I pull the hat from the back closet and dream about being bumped to first class again (which of course has never repeated)...hmm maybe I should start wearing it for all my flights.
Thank you so much for your visit!

The Grand Hotel on northern Michigan's Mackinac Island has a long and storied history. It has been the scene for not only an upscale vacation, but also for political events and the setting for several popular movies. It has slowly modernized over the years, but not too much as to ruin its old school charm. It is meticulously maintained and if you are willing to shell out nearly $500/night, you'll have a "grand" time.

I experienced the worst airline service last night ever. Due to a thunder storm flights were significantly delayed. However, having finally boarded, we taxied to the end of the runway with 4 flights ahead of us in the take off cue, just to be told that we had now missed the city's midnight take-off curfew and that we will have to return back to the terminal building along with 30+ other flights (most long haul). Arriving back at the gate, we had to wait for it to be opened and for us to disembark. Back in the terminal chaos reigned! There were almost no staff to be seen and the few that were still there were aggressive, uncooperative, uninformed and shutting down their counters because they have reached a 12 hour work day. At passport control, there was one desk open trying to deal with 10,000 tired and frustrated passengers. Having worked our way through the gates we arrived in an utterly deserted arrival/departure hall. Not a single desk manned. At 01.00 we were all left to fend for ourselves with no accommodation, food or water arrangements made for passengers. I captured a number of images that I hope will convey the juxtoposed service promise and delivery. I fully understand that there are rules and laws, but this event is a shaming indictment of zero disaster planning by the Lufthansa management and Board of Directors. Shame on you. This is a case of staff rights placed ahead of customer service and safety. This is a case of passengers treated as 'Untermensch'!. Most airlines manage to provide a reasonable service under normal conditions but differentiate themselves from others in how they deal with the unexpected. The ensuing chaos last night showed up Lufthansa and the Frankfurt Airport Authorities for what they truly are - sub-mediocre, negligent and wanting!

Here's what this plaque says:
This car was built in 1929 as "River Liard" by National Steel Car in Hamilton and finished at Canadian Pacific's Angus Shops in Montreal. This luxurious first class car was exclusively for the comfort of sleeping car passengers and featured showers, smoking room, lounge, solarium, and a small buffet. In 1941, the lounges and showers were replaced with bedrooms. The car was renamed Cape Race in 1947 and sold to the Upper Canada Railway Society in 1969, who used it as a lounge and gift shop in numerous railfan excursions in the Toronto area
