We had a bunch of people get together last night and do some light painting / other random things. For this photo, 6 of us lined up and tried to stay as still as possible for a 30 second exposure while another kid spun the steel wool in the background, creating a field of light to silhouette us. I thought it turned out great!

Tasked with protecting a key asset, she faces an alien entity burning through solid stone — its bioluminescent flesh resisting containment.

Finger steady on the trigger, mind colder than the blue fire ahead.

made by 'soekris engineering' in santa cruz, ca. about an hour's drive from me. I bought this unit in person ;)

it runs 'monowall' which is a free opensource firewall for small and embedded systems.

this unit is soekris model 'net5501'. it has 4 10/100 VIA eithernet chips, a serial port for initial config and boots by compact flash (a throw-away 8mb CF card from an old camera!)

runs FreeBSD 4.11 and is managed almost entirely via the embedded web GUI on the device.

the device is fanless and when booted from compact flash has no moving parts. power is via a 'wall wart' similar to what a calculator might use ;)

photo info: panasonic L1 dslr on a tripod and using self-timer (reduce shake). harsh lighting was unfortunately used as I didn't have diffusers large enough for this size of object. shot in jpg mode and a moderate amount of post-processing was done (sharpening, highlight/shadow, cropping).

probably the most amazing firewall in Berlin. @ least my fave. Consider that you are quite in the center of the city.

20 years ago the situation was already similar, just left to the house was another one in- standing in 90 degrees to this one.

i am curious how long this house is already standing like this (including his lost partner) and how long this house still has to be alone or to die...........

Glowing lava thrown 100-200 m into the air - Eruption at Fimmvorduhals Iceland March 2010

Not the best point of view but the important thing to me was how to handle the fire ....

So this was just a "quick" test, to see how it might work (note to the photog - change ISO to 100 next time!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Fun with fire on the Boise Greenbelt

The French Quarter, also known as the Vieux Carré, is the oldest neighborhood in the city of New Orleans. When New Orleans (La Nouvelle-Orléans in French) was founded in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, the city was originally centered on the French Quarter, or the Vieux Carré ("Old Square" in French) as it was known then. While the area is still referred to as the Vieux Carré by some, it is more commonly known as the French Quarter today, or simply "The Quarter." Although called the "French" Quarter, most of the present day buildings were built under Spanish rule and show Spanish colonial tastes. The district as a whole is a National Historic Landmark, and contains numerous individual historic buildings.

The most common definition of the French Quarter includes all the land stretching along the Mississippi River from Canal Street to Esplanade Avenue (13 blocks) and inland to North Rampart Street (seven to nine blocks). It equals an area of 78 square blocks.

Many of the buildings date from before New Orleans became part of the United States, although there are some late 19th century and early 20th century buildings in the area as well. Since the 1920s the historic buildings have been protected by law and cannot be demolished, and any renovations or new construction in the neighborhood must be done according to regulations to match the period historic architectural style.

Most of the French Quarter's architecture was built during the time of Spanish rule over New Orleans and this is reflected in its architecture. The Great New Orleans Fire (1788) and another great fire in 1794 destroyed most of the Quarter's old French colonial architecture, leaving the colony's new Spanish overlords to rebuild it according to more modern tastes—and strict new fire codes, which mandated that all structures be physically adjacent and close to the curb to create a firewall. The old French peaked roofs were replaced with flat tiled ones, and now-banned wooden siding with fire-resistant stucco, painted in the pastel hues fashionable at the time. As a result, colorful walls and roofs and elaborately decorated ironwork balconies and galleries, from both the 18th century and the early 19th century, abound.
