On this 2016 June afternoon, I had scoured the cliffs to find the two young male fledglings. Finally, I spotted them through a narrow gap in the trees. To get this perspective I scaled the side of the cliff, mounted a rental 600mm lens on my tripod, and, balancing carefully as a monopod, eked out a tiny viewing window. In this frame, a fledgling peregrine peers longingly up at his brother (out of frame on the ledge above) who managed to snatch a meal from Dad during a food exchange. Eventually, the foodless fledgling flew up to the ledge above and snagged a bit of meat.

Always exciting to find the first hamamelis in bloom with its strange configuration in the flowers and its beautiful haunting scent.
I usually find them in Hilliers Gardens but now we have this one of our own, in a pot on the deck.
A little research for the origins of the name of this shrub gave me different answers but my favourite explanation is this:
.....the flexible forked twigs of witch hazel are preferred as divining rods. Regardless, modern witches do consider witch hazel a magical plant, to ward off evil and to help heal a broken heart. 'Hazel' because the plant's leaves resemble those of a hazelnut tree.

Its been two years since my last lightning post. I love doing weather photography but this is not one of my best shots. I missed the lightning storm the night before so I was bound and determined to get out there this night and get a shot. My problem is where do I go, what do I put in front of me to make the photo better than just a shot of lightning in the sky. So....last night I tried using the local little league fields as the foreground to my lightning photos. This worked good because we had intermittent rain showers and I was able to duck into a dugout when the rain came down. But I am not too thrilled with the way the ball field turned out in the shot.
So now I am determined to find a better spot that I can stand when the next storm comes in. I need a place close to home that is easy to get to and has something interesting to add to a lightning shot.
I have heard that we will be having a more active storm season this year so hopefully I have plenty of opportunities to improve from this lightning shot.

With the spectacular granite peaks of the Torres del Paine in the background, it is easy to overlook the small flock of rheas (Darwin's rhea, Rhea pennata} in the foreground. With their excellent cryptic colouration these large flightless birds blend in so well with the fall grasses and bushes on the pampas.

Taken on a gray, cold day on which I encountered snow, rain and freezing temperatures. It was great, except for almost getting stuck in the slick, sticky mud, some of which made it back home with me through the mountains.

Once again, I find myself on the IC shooting the daily transfer from CN’s Glenn Yard to Kirk Yard. On a surprising sunny day this December, train L5369129 traverses its way south through one of Chicago’s most busiest and existential junctions of Kensington. An Illinois Central SD70 (1038) leads a couple of CN corporate painted units such as a GEVO, GP40R, and an SD38-2. Seen here in rare form taking main one under the wire while passing the Illinois Central interlocking tower nearing its 100th year guarding the junction for the Illinois Central, Chicago South Shore and South Bend, and now of course Canadian National and Metra. Us locals and regulars that know the train well, know how hard it is for them to run main 1 here at Kensington, yes I’m sure it happens all the time when were not around but to be there when it does, opens for new shot opportunities such as this.
