This female House finch was seen in the Countrywood/Bancroft neighborhood of Walnut Creek, California.

The green and red bokeh are from a nearby eucalyptus tree.

Here's a nice male Purple Finch (Carpodacus purpureus) who dropped in to pose for me. I couldn't convince him to turn just a bit to the right!

Mainly a seed eater, the Saffron Finch generally searches for seeds and small arthropods on or near the ground.

There has been some disagreement as to whether the Saffron Finch belongs in the family Emberizidae with the sparrows or Thraupidae with the Tanagers.

There are three, separate populations one in northern Colombia and Venezuela; another in Ecuador and Peru and the third in north-east Brazil to central Argentina.

These finches are fairly common, so I've been waiting for a good shot to post.

The giant tortoise is one of the most iconic animals in the Galapagos. El Chato reserve on the Santa Cruz island is home to hundreds of these gentle giants - the perfect place to see them in their natural habitat. It is also an interesting place birds: Darwin tree and ground finches fly between the trees, while yellow warblers add a touch of color to the scene.

A pretty male Purple Finch (Carpodacus purpureus) has been hanging around our feeders the last few days! I guess his parental duties are over for this year! It's nice to see him!

I notice recently that our male birds are beginning to show their Spring breeding colours.

Thank you for your visits!

Viewed from Threadneedle Street.

The finch was not in my house, but it is a house finch. But it was close to my house, so does that make it a peri-house finch?.

I discovered recently that the colouration of house finches can vary due to their diet. Things that contain carotene influence it the most.

... Quick dusting of snow followed by warm temperatures really gets the birds active. Liked this finch there against the late afternoon light on the blue sky.

The male is bright yellow with an orange crown which distinguishes it from most other yellow finches.

The females are more confusing and are usually just a slightly duller version of the male.
