ABOUT THE FILM INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS
Now in its 30th year, the Film Independent Spirit Awards is an annual celebration honoring artist-driven films made with an economy of means by filmmakers whose films embody independence and originality. The Spirit Awards recognizes the achievements of American independent filmmakers and promotes the finest independent films of the year to a wider audience. The winners of the Spirit Awards are voted upon by Film Independent and IFP Members. Awards are given in the following categories: Best Feature, Best First Feature, Best First Screenplay, Best Director, Best Screenplay, John Cassavetes Award (given to the best feature made for a budget under $500,000), Best Male Lead, Best Female Lead, Best Supporting Male, Best Supporting Female, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best International Film, Best Documentary and the Robert Altman Award. Independent filmmaker Caveh Zahedi, best known for his autobiographical films (I Am A Sex Addict, Tripping With Caveh, In the Bathtub of the World), also teaches a personal documentary class at the New School in which students are asked to make a film every week on a given topic. “The Personal Documentary” showcases the work of his students. All of the films are approximately 3 minutes long, and all of them were made in 2010.

SX-70 Sonar One Step camera and PX100 film. A little underexposed but I hope to get better at judging this as I come to know this camera better. I had a brilliant time on this workshop and met some great people today. Though I had my own camera Tom had also brought several cameras with him for anyone who didn't have their own. So you really don't have an excuse not to try it :-)

Brian Desmond Hurst was born Hans Hurst in East Belfast on 12 February 1895 (Hans was changed to Brian during the First World War). He left school at fourteen to work at the Bloomfield linen factory. He signed up in 1914 and fought with the Royal Irish Rifles at Gallipoli.
Following the war Hurst studied art in Canada and Paris. He arrived in Holywood in 1928 where he met the film director John Ford. Ford, a lifelong friend, introduced him to the film industry.
Hurst moved to England in 1933 and began a long career in British cinema. Between 1935 and 1962 he produced or directed over 30 films, including adaptations of plays by J. M. Synge. Ourselves Alone, a 1936 film set during the Irish War of Independence, was censored in the south and banned completely in Northern Ireland. Scrooge, Hurst's 1951 version of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, is perhaps his most lastingly popular film. He worked with the foremost actors of the time including Sir Alex Guinness, Siobhan McKenna and Sir Ralph Richardson. He launched the careers of Lord Richard Attenborough and Vanessa Redgrave by providing them with their first credited roles and paid for Sir Roger Moore to attend RADA.
Irish Hearts is artistically interesting, as it is probably Ireland's first feature length talkie as is On the Night of the Fire, which is Britain's first film noir. His last film, an adaptation of the Playboy of the Western World, was released in 1962.
Hurst died in London on 26th September 1986.
