How have I never noticed this Ozarks gem before? Right on the outskirts of town, it sits proudly, displaying windows galore and chimneys fashioned from our native stone.

The farming operation is long gone on this central Wisconsin farm. The paint has deteriorated down to bare wood, and the buildings wait for nature to take its toll.

Someone collected the fieldstones for their foundations, cut the trees, made the lumber, and erected the buildings back in the first half of the 20th century.

The buildings hold many lost stories!

Terraces at Ollantaytambo were built to a higher standard than common Inca agricultural terraces; for instance, they have higher walls made of cut stones instead of rough fieldstones. This type of high-prestige terracing is also found in other Inca royal estates such as Chinchero, Pisaq, and Yucay.

I cut through the golf course on my way home on my early morning walk. This gave me a rare view of the back of the country club. I don't play golf but have enjoyed sitting in the outdoor area enjoying a lite meal. Sadly TCC has been sold to Treehouse Brewing Company. They are turning this building into a beer hall and will continue to operate the golf course and various other amenities.

"Two years in the making, constructed of 1,579 tons of fieldstones, about 10 city blocks in length, the sculptor Andy Goldsworthy's serpentine 'Wall That Went for a Walk (Storm King Wall)' meanders between maples and oaks, crosses old farm roads, plunges into a pond and re-emerges on the landscape of Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, N.Y. Before ADA - Here is a fieldstone staircase in one of our Genesee County parks built by the WPA, a Great Depression-era program in the USA. It is built diagonally down this hill with a minimal rise in each stair. This was an attempt at minimizing barriers "before we had to". Now, eighty years later, it is still going strong and looking good in autumn's colors

The Evangelical Lutheran St. Peter's Church in Bosau at the southern end of the Großer Plöner See is a Romanesque fieldstone church from the 12th century, founded by Bishop Vicelin.

Bosau was temporarily from 1150 to 1156 seat of the diocese of Oldenburg under the bishops Vicelin and Gerold. In this respect, St. Peter's Church is a former episcopal church and is therefore also referred to as the "smallest cathedral in the world". The chronicler and priest Helmold von Bosau wrote his Chronica Slavorum here from 1167 to 1172.

The St. Peter's Church in Bosau has been the central venue for the Bosau Summer Concerts for over 40 years.

This setting is along scenic Route 100 in Chester County. It is constructed from fieldstone, which is common in this area of Pennsylvania.

The reason that I know this route so well is that I commuted from my home in Chester County to DuPont in Delaware for 20 years,

This fieldstone house of Provincial Scottish Victorian architecture was built for one of the early settlers in his part of the former Township. The stone for this farmer’s residence and carriage house was drawn from local fields. This is one of six significant residential buildings featured in the 1875 Atlas of the County of Brant. Today it is a private residence with an antique shop.

I posted a photo of the front doors last week (www.flickr.com/photos/195136680@N07/52897739361/in/photos...). The building is made of local field stone, and as you can see, it is held together with a significant amount of hardware. That didn't stop it from cracking and buckling (note the back). It is good that it is still standing after nearly 200 years and that the town didn't just let it crumble.

The church is was probably built around the time of the Reformation (1536) and is situated on Venø island.

It is the smallest church in Denmark measuring only 9.8 by 4.2 metres (32 by 14 feet).

The low ceiling and the limited seating capacity (only about 50 places).

The church is built of fieldstone while brick has been used for the corners and later extensions.

There is no tower as the church bell is inside the gable at the west end of the church.

A morning hike in my local park found me in the sweet spot for the morning light as it shown on this old fieldstone staircase, built via the WPA program in the late 1930s.

"The oldest part of the church is the fieldstone western wall, which is dated to around 800. The Romanesque hall church made of tuff stone was built around 1100 on the site of a previous building, and around 1485 the Gothic choir and tower were added.

The interior of the church was later remodeled in the baroque style and in the 19th century restored to its original Gothic state." Wikipedia

The various elements of "s" caught my eye in this photo.....the morning sun, the tall Sycamores behind the vintage picnic shelter, and the shadows, especially on the fieldstone chimney.

A very frosty morning a couple of years ago in north Iowa. The frost, clouds and light level created a mystical surreal atmosphere on the hill surrounding the tower.

Purported to be the second highest point in Iowa at 1,450 feet above sea level, the view is 250 feet plus above the surrounded countryside. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1934, it provides a stunning 360 degree view from the top of the tower.

The church of Lübsee, built around 1263, is with its location and equipment something very special among the churches of this region. The original cemetery is still a real churchyard with graves, which are grouped around the church as in ancient times. The late Romanesque brick building on a high fieldstone base has a rectangular nave and an indented square chancel. While the chancel is cross-rib vaulted, the nave has a wooden beam ceiling.

The small church village is somewhat hidden not far from Schönberg and belongs to the municipality of Menzendorf, whose beautiful landscape is ideal for hiking.

Zu den wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten im Ort Nagu gehört die zwischen 1430 und 1450 erbaute Feldsteinkirche, die im Zentrum des Ortes in Kyrkbacken (dt. „Kirchberg“) steht. One of the most important sights in Nagu is the fieldstone church, built between 1430 and 1450, which stands in the centre of the village in Kyrkbacken (‘Church Hill’). The organ from 1791 was built by Olof Schwan and is the oldest organ played in Finland that still consists mainly of original parts.

68 Thomas Street: This two storey, three bay house has been covered with stucco, but the fieldstone foundation, door and window surrounds, window sash and delicate trims, reflect the fine craftsmanship of the builder.

This property is for sale and it has what I believe is a Federal style house to go with it. It was all in shade so the light was just too bad to photograph it but worse than that there is a huge for sale sign in the middle that joins the house and the carriage house. So I thought I would find more details about it. I don't know how they will sell it when I looked all over and I couldn't find it ;-)

If I had to guess I would say the home and what I am pretty sure was once a carriage house would be roughly circa 1880-1890

An ancient abandoned fieldstone house just outside of Galena, Illinois looks very spooky and mysterious in the misty, gloomy chill of a December morning. – Legend has it that there are many haunted places in Galena as well as the surrounding countryside. – I didn’t know for sure if this was one of them, so while taking this photograph I decided to keep my distance and not linger around long enough to disturb any restless spirits :) . ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©
