Field Notes from Quarantine (SARS), 2009
Katie Holten
(ink on paper, 9 x 12 inches)
From "Landscapes of Quarantine," a group exhibition at Storefront for Art and Architecture, NYC, from March 10 - April 17, 2010.
In November 2009, Holten visited North Brother island, which lies southwest of the Bronx in the East River. Typhoid Mary was held in isolation on North Brother for more than twenty years until her death in 1938. The island’s quarantine hospital was closed soon after, and North Brother has been abandoned and off-limits to the public since the 1960s. It is now overrun by an invasive species – kudzu – and, in the spring, is the preferred breeding ground of rare Black-crowned Night-Herons.
Just tested the Field Notes and doane paper notebooks with my fountain pen. The Field Notes feather and bleed through the paper badly. Very fountain pen UNfriendly. I have a fine point nib too, so it would be a massacre on anything bigger. Doane paper handles my fountain pen very nicely though. Like I said before, it is close to Clairfontaine in the Rhodia, so thumbs up for doane paper and fountain pen combo!

I finally placed my order for some FIELD NOTES. The extras that came with my order were the pencil, a pen, a Coudal sticker and a "general purpose band of rubber".

An Alkaline meadow of Cressa (Cressa truxillensis) on the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve.
EDIT: After revisiting this meadow today I could see that the smaller blue vegetation in the backround is Alkali Mallow and is now flowering. So here we have a blue field of Cressa and in the backround Alkali Mallow (Malvella leprosa).
