On August 21, 1991, 34 years ago, Santa Fe B23-7 6406 leads westbound trailers up the grade of the Caprock escarpment between the sidings of Buenos and Southland in rattlesnake country of West Texas. This is the Texas mainline connecting Galveston/Houston/Dallas with the Transcon at Clovis, New Mexico. The train has just left rugged ranching and oil country and will top out in a few minutes in very flat farm and oil country. Photo by Joe McMillan.

On a warm (for winter) sunny evening out in Waterman, IL, a former Santa Fe SD40 cruises west with the 476 job. Seen here passing the DeLong Co. grain facility.

After waiting for a bit at the former pig ramp until "Run 33" finishes switching at West Wye, CPKC train YKK24-27 eases up the lead alongside the Hansen-Mueller elevator with a gray KCS GP38-2 and several flat cars with a few strings of welded rail. They'll make a brief stop at West Wye Tower for some paperwork before leaving Knoche for Grandview. It's a pretty underwhelming train, but it's cool to see some KCS "battleship gray" again.

This engine started life on the Toledo, Peoria & Western in May of 1977 as the TPW No. 2001. After the "Tip-Up" merged with the Santa Fe, it became ATSF No. 3561, later renumbered to 2370 and even being repainted into the "Kodachrome" paint scheme in the midst of the ill-fated "SPSF" merger. It was repainted again into the "Yellowbonnet" scheme, and eventually sold as the GMTX No. 2370 before KCS picked it up. It was the KCS No. 4029 before being renumbered as the 1921 as a newly delivered SD70ACe took its number. 9/27/25.

Guardar la fe en un cajón

no es recurso para el hombre

que quiere vivir y ser.

No es cuestión de religión

creer y saber ser,

aunque alguno así piense.

Quien cree puede comprender

y comprendiendo entiende

que no hay razón que no lea

con los ojos de la fe,

y ponga razón y fe

en una misma balanza

pues hay que saber creer

y con ello comprender

que en la vida quien no cree

le falta algo a su esencia

para poder entender

que todos los pueblos conviven

con la razón y la fe.

The Santa Fe was donated to the City of Kingman in 1953, at the end of its useful life. It covered over two million miles between Los Angeles and Kansas City.
