Fertile - Iowa
Out exploring the countryside yesterday afternoon looking for areas that I have not photographed, or haven't in quite awhile. This creek has never been documented, first time I've ever checked it out!
It eventually flows into the Winnebago River just above the damn. Not much snow currently, but another storm later tonight!

The fertile leaflets of this fern are covered with tiny round spore producing sporangis. Upon releasing the spores, the fertile leaflets will fall off, leaving an open space (interrupted) between the remaining upper and lower infertile leaflets.
Hard fern is dimorphic, which means it has two types of frond – sterile and fertile.

The territorial expansion towards Chinchaysuyo (now Ecuador) took place towards the middle of the 15th century and culminated in the first decades of the 16th. It was initiated by the Inca Tupac Yupanqui, son of Pachacuti Inca, the "renovator of the universe" and true builder of the Tahuantinsuyo or Empire of the Incas. The example of the great Tupac Yupanqui was followed by his son Huayna Cápac, until he submitted under his power the entire "universe" then known, with more than 6,000 kilometers of North-South extension and fundamentally affecting the people of the Sierra, since they felt no interest in the low plains of the West Coast and in the endless Amazon rainforests of the East. This empire included on the one hand the widest diversity of peoples, cultures, languages, cults and technologies, and on the other an extraordinary variety of ecological resources; factors with which thanks to an administrative, economic and theocratic system imposed by the Cuzqueños, the largest civilization that has existed in Andean History was structured.
The Incas had no major difficulty in dominating the Cañaris and Puruháes (in Ecuador) with whom they applied a very common strategy in them: the friendly system of reciprocity with the heads of the groups until they achieved their subordination; This method had given them rapid and successful results in Bolivia and Peru; while in the northern villages they had to apply the severe military conquest due to the stubborn resistance they encountered. Testimony of those fierce battles was precisely that of Yahuarcocha (lake of blood) whose waters were dyed red with the blood of the brave Caranquis who succumbed to Huayna Cápac himself.
The invaders captured from the conquered the long tradition and knowledge they had about agriculture, metallurgy, production of luxury products, extraction of the Spondylus shell, salt, coca, etc. Here they found a prodigal nature, with humid rainforest, mangroves and coastline on the coast; wide valleys, grasslands and fertile mountains in the Sierra. This geography counteracted with the ecological systems of the puna, reduced fertile spaces, or the extensive coastal deserts that predominate in the Central and Southern Andes, characteristic of present-day Peru.
Another view from the Heights of Fodderty and you can see the fertile land and the distant mountains.

These horsetails may have sterile or fertile stems. Sterile stems start to grow after the fertile stems have wilted. The sterile stems tend to be much taller and bushier, with the jointed segments being around one inch (2.5 cm) long with a diameter of about 1/20th of an inch (1 mm). These segments contain one set of whorled, slender, erect branches each. Some stems can have as many as 20 segments and be as tall as 2-24 inches (5–60 cm). The fertile stems tend to be half as tall as the sterile stems and also tend to be more succulent.
This thin strip of blacktop runs uphill from the local cemetery to the top of an adjacent ridge. It bisects fertile farmland among the way, and opens onto wonderful vistas of the landscape. The road has been here as long as there's been a village, and a cemetery to bury its dead. I think about this history every time I come here. The place is literally steeped in history, but also in the marvel of present day living. It's an anachronism in some ways. Like other old farm roads that have persisted with minimal improvement into the modern era. Unlike most roads I walk, cars seem out of place here, but not me. That's the complete opposite of most highways these days that are decidedly pedestrian hostile. There, cars belong but people do not. My dream would be to some day see this road closed to traffic and left to dreamers like me. Fat chance, but that's what dreams are for.
Anyway this is the aftermath of a summer thunderstorm. More accurately the storm is still in progress. The adrenaline part of me observing the approach and photographing the ominous clouds is over. We're in the me walking home, getting soaked in rain stage. But as the storm races east, the sky begins to break to my west spilling a glow of golden sunset over the landscape. This is why evening thunderstorms are my absolute favorite. The ones that strike in the hour before sunset when low angle sun and storm clouds coexist. At this exact moment, rain is still falling, and thunder is booming, but each clap seems a little more distant than the last. The storm is full of energy, it's just moving away. I can relax a bit. I'm already soaked so there's no point running. I can't be any wetter than I already am. And there's something purifying about being soaked with rain water on a summer day. Or in this case on an idyllic summer evening in July. Walking Cemetery Road.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas or the Urubamba Valley, is a valley in the Andes of Peru, north of the Inca capital of Cusco. It is located in the present-day Peruvian region of Cusco. Stretching from Pisac to Ollantaytambo, this fertile valley is irrigated by the Urubamba River. The Chanapata civilization first utilized this area starting at around 800 BCE because of the rich soil used for agriculture. The Qotacalla civilization lived in the Sacred Valley from 500 to 900 CE The Killke civilization then lived in the Sacred Valley from 900 CE until the Incan Empire took over the region in 1420. The Incan Empire ruled this area until the arrival of the Spanish.

Enchanted by the pleasant microclimate and the fertile land, Huayna Capac settled here, built palaces and agricultural terraces with a system of aqueducts for irrigation. The place was considered a true example of hydraulic technology and agricultural production. Moreover, the aqueducts are still functional and the terraces are in good condition!

Lomaria discolor is a species of fern endemic to New Zealand. The photo shows a young fertile frond of the Crown fern. At this early stage it is a pale green, but as it matures it turns a dark brown color as the sori (spore-bearing capsules) ripen and become visible as a continuous band on the underside of the narrow leaflets. I was struck by the elegant unfurling shape, another example of nature’s artistry.

Tsewang Dolkar, 53, tending to her mustard fields in Likir, Ladakh.
In the high-altitude fields of Ladakh, where fertile soil is a rare commodity, mustard is a versatile staple: its seeds are pressed for cooking oil, while the stalks are preserved as essential winter fodder for livestock.

Fertile - Iowa
This beautiful little creek to my knowledge has no name. I've asked the folks that live in the area . . . nothing! It's one of many that flow through north Iowa.
They do support wildlife, and provide drainage for farmers that tile their farmland. They are fun to hike, you never know what will bolt out from behind a tree or tall grass.

Perhaps my favorite line in Montana is the BNSF Laurel Sub between its namesake and Great Falls. While not running through the "mountains" so to speak there are 5 tunnels on the line. And since it runs through some wide fertile valleys there are numerous grain elevators both old and new. In addition a few steel trestles provide nice photos as well. Here the Great Falls based "Lost Local" is making its usual once a week run toward Moccasin. They are exiting the 1586-foot Surprise Creek Tunnel.

In a secluded glade of what would one day be known as Europe, a solitary acorn fell from the branches of a mighty oak, nestled into the fertile soil, and began its journey. As it sprouted into a sapling, the surrounding forest echoed with the sounds of the Renaissance. While artists painted masterpieces and philosophers pondered the mysteries of existence, the young oak's roots delved deeper into the earth, drawing sustenance and strength from the land.
By the 1600s, the sapling had grown into a sturdy young tree. Its branches stretched towards the sky as the world around it changed dramatically. The tree witnessed the Thirty Years' War, a period of great turmoil and transformation in Europe. Despite the conflict and chaos, the oak thrived, its roots intertwining with those of the neighboring trees, forming an intricate network of resilience.
As the 18th century dawned, the oak had become a majestic presence in the forest. Its trunk grew thicker and its branches wider, providing shelter to countless woodland creatures. The Age of Enlightenment brought forth ideas of liberty and reason, leading to revolutions that reshaped nations. The oak stood steadfast, its leaves rustling with the whispers of change that swept across continents.
The 19th century brought the Industrial Revolution, transforming societies and landscapes. The forest around the oak began to thin as trees were felled to fuel progress. Yet, the ancient oak remained, a silent observer of the relentless march of technology. Its roots dug even deeper, anchoring it firmly as factories rose and steam engines roared.
The 20th century was marked by two world wars that scarred the earth and its people. The oak, now a towering giant, stood through the bombardments and battles that raged nearby. It bore witness to the resilience of humanity and nature alike, as both sought to rebuild and heal. The tree's gnarled bark bore the scars of time, but its heartwood remained strong.
Today, the ancient oak stands as a living monument to history. Its massive trunk and sprawling roots tell the story of centuries gone by.
