Up close and personal with a female Mallard Duck. She landed about 8 feet behind me, she was voicing her displeasure to the two males pursuing her. After I fired off a few photos she took flight with the two males in hot pursuit. Photo taken at Klineline Pond, Vancouver, Washington this Spring.

Another photo of the Merlin that decided to visit my yard. This was taken in low light because it was snowing, through a window and with a camera held by shaky hands because I was so excited to see it. Taken in Calgary, Alberta.

Thank you for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.

A darling female Rufous Hummingbird sipping nectar from our Hosta Spikes last summer. She was resting on one of the blooms to conserve a little engery while fueling up with nectar. While male mallards, with their lustrous green heads, white neck collars, and chestnut breast feathers, are instantly identifiable to bird experts and nonexperts alike, the same cannot be said for female mallards. From a distance, females may be easily confused with several other large pale brown ducks

Unfortunately, this poor Barn Owl succumbed to the relentless high winds and torrential rain, that we have been getting over the past few weeks. She was found in a dutch barn and the reason for her death was starvation. It is one of the most common causes for Barn Owls in bad weather. Barn Owls hunt over open ground, listening for their prey in the grasses etc, they cannot do this in continuous wind and rain, as their feathers are not waterproof and they are unable to hear their prey.....Very Sad.

Splendid Calopteryx (formerly Agrion brilliant), is a species of odonate insect suborder zygoptera or damselflies which includes, in Europe, only one genus, Calopteryx.

The bright adult Calopteryx is 6 to 7 cm wingspan.

There is a wide, very dark blue-green band on the wings of males.

Females have greenish wings.

Curlews and Godwits show some sexual differences in bill length with females generally having longer bills. However, there is some overlap but this individual has got an extraordinarily long bill so my money is on it being a female

This bird comes daily to my feeders here in NE Oklahoma to eat bird seed. I thought they were strictly insectivores? Has anyone else ever observed this behavior from Tanagers?

Spent all day in the backyard testing out my 90D that I just got back from Canon for the second time....I think there's an improvement!!

Found one morning in my live mouse trap cage!

Less showy than her male counterpart, the female Black Redstart is a charming, subtly beautiful little bird. Very often choosing to inhabit urban areas, her choice of nest site will sometimes bring them into close proximity to people.

During a photography shoot in Hungary, we were lucky enough to have a pair nesting in an old barn, next to the villa where we were staying. The barn was being renovated & despite constant interruptions from the building works, the birds seemed undaunted, flying in over the builders heads to feed their young.
