Juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron back at Wildwood Lake, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, after an 8-year absence. Several people think this might be a juvenile Yellow-crowned Night Heron. It's a toss up.
It is always a blessing to be in the presence of lekking threatened Columbian Sharp-tailed Grouse. The sounds, the dance… it is all so magical to be a witness to it. Grassland birds are suffering steep declines across their range and are impacted by agriculture, development, pesticides, climate change and fires. 60% of grassland birds in Canada have disappeared since the 1970’s. We must do all we can to conserve and save our grassland habitats so that grassland birds and these grouse in particular can dance on and thrive.
These photos were taken from a blind to prevent any disturbance. The lek was approached before the grouse arrived (an hour before sunrise) and I left after the last grouse departed. It is tiring and your body aches but it is worth it to share in the magic. The beautiful chevrons on their feathers, the yellow eye-combs, the purple air sacs are all splendid and awe inspiring. The boldness of the sounds and dances they make with their stamping feet, outstretched wings and pointed upright tails of a normally secretive species is something to behold.

Our love is six feet under
I can't help but wonder
If our grave was watered by the rain
Would roses bloom?
Could roses bloom
Again?
Sometimes I wonder where my baby’s
itsy bitsy feet will go in their lifetime.
Wherever they go, I can only hope that
they never forget their way back home.

All the land in England higher than 3,000 feet (914 m) above sea level lies within the National Park, including Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. It also contains the deepest and largest natural lakes in England Wast Water and Windermere respectively.
Went out to the Bartel area to look for wildlife this morning. Was lucky the last couple of days to see some Harriers, Rough-legged Hawks, and a few deer.
The fog came in quick and fast, after I took this picture, you couldn't see 50 feet in front of you.
The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

Setophaga townsendi,
From the Morro Bay State Park marina boardwalk.
Morro Bay, California
It took me a while staring at the left photo to see it, but there is a brown caterpillar an inch of so ahead of the warbler and perpendicular to it. Several seconds later the warbler had the caterpillar on the boardwalk and downed it.
An interesting sidelight to me is the bright yellow color of the feet in the right photo. Since I rarely look at warbler feet, I did some homework. Per Cornell's Birds of the World for this species, "Legs and feet yellow at hatch (SMM), medium flesh in juveniles, becom-ing brownish black in adults (Curson et al. 1994)." I DO have a photo of a juvenile with yellow feet, but due to the dark bib and auriculars, this bird may be an adult female. (Thanks, Tom.)
They're all around us, textures, those lines and patterns, seemingly purposeful, sometimes random.
Look closely in nature and you'll find them everywhere, they draw you in, sometimes they are impossibly perpendicular. Here is an example of textures that at a cursory glance make no sense, how could this monolith possibly form naturally with lines that are virtually opposite those a mere few feet below them. Bry will give you the precise explanation, it'll blow your mind, time scales and natural evolution of the landscape which one can barely comprehend. Nature is awesome.
10 exposures went into this image, 4 for the sky and 6 for the foreground, shot with an h-alpha modified Nikon Z6 and Tamron 35mm f1.4 on a Sky Watcher Star Adventurer tracking mount. Foreground exposures are 2 minutes at f2 and ISO 1600, sky exposures are 2 minutes at f2 and ISO 800.
How I feel today.... can't quite get going. :) This image is kind of similar to an earlier post here.... but a little different.... so, thought I'd add it too.
These are feet that belong to a cute adorable lovely kid named Safwan. He is almost 2. He is the most cute little munchkin I have had the pleasure to have around me recently.
This was shot in April, on my day out to the beach. We took him along with us, it was so much fun watching him go nuts over the sand. He found it too amusing, kept grabbing them in his small fist and sprinkling it around, burying his hands and feet under the sand and discovering them again. Funniest thing was while we were laughing our head off, he was extremely serious and busy in his task. He didn't bother to laugh 'with us' =) :P
From Wikipedia: Horseshoe Bend is the name for a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River located near the town of Page, Arizona, in the United States. The bend is locally known as "King Bend." It is located five miles (8.7 km) downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, about four miles or 6 km southwest of Page. Accessible via a ½-mile (1.2 km) hike from U.S. Route 89, it can be viewed from the steep cliff above. According to Google terrain maps, the overlook is 4,200 feet above sea level and the Colorado River is at 3,200 feet above sea level making it a breathtaking 1,000 foot drop. It is also the suicide capital of Arizona.
