Chastleton House (/ˈtʃæsəltən.haʊs/) is a Jacobean country house situated at Chastleton near Moreton-in-Marsh, Oxfordshire, England (grid reference SP2429). It has been owned by the National Trust since 1991 and is a Grade I listed building.[1]

Chastleton House was built between 1607 and 1612, for Walter Jones, who had made his fortune from the law,[2] although his family were originally Welsh wool merchants. The estate was bought in 1604 from Robert Catesby, although his residence was demolished to make way for the new house and no traces of the original building on this spot remain. The house is built of Cotswold stone, round a small courtyard, called the Dairy Court.
External and internal features[edit]
Chastleton House is different from other houses of its type in several respects. It has never had a park with a long, landscaped approach such as many other houses of its era. Rather it was built within an existing settlement, Chastleton village, which provided many of the services for the house which would otherwise have been attached, such as a laundry, a fishpond and a bakehouse. Secondly, until its acquisition by the Trust in 1991, it was owned by the same family for nearly 400 years. Its treatment by the Trust was similarly unusual, with a policy of conservation rather than restoration, enabling visitors to see the house largely as it was when acquired.[3] As a result of the Trust's approach, a large number of the rooms in the house are open to the public.
Of particular note is the Long Gallery, with its barrel vaulted ceiling. No other gallery of such a length 72 feet (22 m) and date survive. Like much of the house, the Long Gallery ceiling has been subject to damage. The neglect of the roof for almost two centuries led to the failing of part of the plaster ceiling in the early 1800s, but it was not repaired until 1904-05, when two local men were engaged to make good the losses.[3]
Also of interest is the impressive Great Chamber. Designed for the entertainment of the most important guests and for the playing of music, the design scheme has its roots in Renaissance Italy and is the most impressive in the house. The setting out of the panelling shows some inspiration from the classical, as do the painted roundels around the frieze, depicting the twelve prophets of the Old Testament and the twelve Sybils or Prophetesses of Antiquity. Also in the Great Chamber are a set of Jacobite Fiat glasses engraved with the Jacobite emblems of roses, oakleaves, and a compass rose, which betray the families eighteenth-century sympathies. These probably belonged to Henry Jones IV, who was the president of the Gloucestershire Cycle Club, one of the oldest established Jacobite clubs.[4]
Other items of interest in the house include the Juxon Bible, which is said to have been used by the chaplain, Bishop Juxon, at the execution of Charles I. Juxon’s family lived locally in Long Compton until his family died out in the eighteenth century, when it is thought to have been given to John Jones II because the Jones’ were another family with Jacobite sympathies.[4]
In 1919 a number of significant tapestries were discovered at the house, and were interpreted as evidence for the establishment of a tapestry-weaving venture at the manor house of William Sheldon (d 1570) at Barcheston, near Shipston on Stour, Warwickshire.[5] One of these tapestries is currently on display in the Middle Chamber, and another is in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Chastleton Garden[edit]
The Grade II listed garden at Chastleton has undergone a number of revisions since the completion of the house in 1612. There is no archaeological evidence of a garden on this site before this date: indeed, the North Garden is split by an old field boundary.
There is no map or written evidence to suggest how the garden was laid out by Walter Jones in 1612, but the walls that enclose the garden are 17th century and archaeological evidence that suggests that the garden has been laid out the same way for the last 400 years. It is laid out according to the recommendation proposed by Gervase Markham in The English Husbandman (1613) [6] – a fore court to the front of the house, with the base (or bass) court on one side, which included the stables and other farm buildings. The other two sides of the house should be composed of gardens, divided into an orchard, a kitchen garden and a best (or pleasure) garden, planted with more ornamental plants[7]
At the time, the Forecourt at Chastleton described the entrance area below the House court (the area directly in front of the house). The House court was raised slightly above the forecourt by a small retaining wall, probably with a balustrade on top. There were likely to be few plants in the front of the house in the early 17th century, with the House Court possibly being paved or having two grass plats on each side of the central path like the Forecourt.[7]
To the east of this was the Pleasaunce or Pleasure Garden. This was the Best Garden, which was levelled, but with a viewing terrace along one side which also gave entrance to the church at the opposite end. The design of this garden is not known, but it was almost certainly surrounded by high walls with fruit trees trained against it. The Best Garden was laid out in the circular pattern we see today by Dorothy Whitmore Jones in 1833,[7] although it is suggested that there were already box plants there. Beds were added within the circular hedge in the 1890s or 1900s and then grassed over again by 1972. During the periods of time when money came into the family the planting in this garden was always renewed.
To the north are terraces, levelled from the sloping ground. There is evidence of a medieval cultivation terrace and the remnants of the old boundary wall of the garden. There was a Bowling Green on the Middle terrace and the third terrace may also have been the site of the original kitchen garden.[7]
Today, the middle terraces are the site of two croquet lawns, originally laid out by Walter Whitmore-Jones in the 1860s. His version of the rules of croquet published in The Field in 1865 became definitive, and Chastleton is considered the birthplace of croquet as a competitive sport[8][9]
The Kitchen Garden as it is now was enclosed in 1847 and was formed of the existent garden and from part of the adjoining field. It was laid out as four plots on one side of a broad path and two on the other side, and the kitchen garden today has been recently rejuvenated to form this pattern as well.

Chastleton House was used as one of the locations for the 2015 BBC Two television series Wolf Hall and represented 'Wolf Hall' home of the Seymours.[10]

Gill's Corner (acrylics painting on canvas) by Howard Turner (1934-2017). Features T. Gill Newsagent shop. The knock-kneed gentleman seen outside the newsagents was known as Clogger Kennedy.
Howard Turner specialised in colourful scenes of Keighley in the 1920s and 1930s, often featuring well-known local eccentrics from the period. He had worked as a hospital administrator and he began painting during his working life as relaxation after the challenges of the working day. He took up painting full-time in the 1980s after moving to Ickornshaw where he lived with his wife, artist Sheila Turner. He was a member of the Yorkshire Itinerants group of artists who got together to raise money for charity.

This Week in Bristol Indiana-9-3-2017 Spotlight on Cummins Park: A sign listing the many features directs visitors to the Park, located behind the Elkhart Co. Historical Museum. Although the popular Splash Pad closes after Labor Day, many other year-round family fun features include: the new wooden Train, a swing set, the basketball court and tennis court. A number of picnic tables are located about the park, including one in the woods overlooking the river. A new red Swing by the Splash Pad is a donor memorial to Wilma Berkey as well as a blue bench nearby. The Little Library with books to take or trade is a recent addition. Near the covered Pavilion (no need to rent) is a large grill. Two groups of exercise machines are located along the paved walking/bike path that circles through the woods by the River. The trash cans have new hoods, and the new regular and handicap portable restrooms were donated by Satellite Industries. The historic Cathcart Cemetery is located at the edge of the Park. A tree and a magnolia bush are donor memorials to Mary Ann Landis’s family. Come see for yourself this family-friendly Park! It is named for Cloyce Cummins.
Galway features a number of interlocking waterways which pass through the city and they have played a major role in its development as an industrial town.
The waterway system is a bit complicated and I am still trying to determine the names of all of the streams, mill races and canals. If my description is incorrect you are invited to correct me as necessary.
The Eglington Canal in Galway was built c.1850. It follows a curving path south from inflow from River Corrib Upper and passes under five bridges which have made watercourse non-navigable.
The canal begins to north of Salmon Weir on west bank of Corrib River (upper) where a small harbour is located.
The canal then proceeds south-west splitting into two separate waterways with the main canal continuing to south-west and a shorter but but equally substantial branch proceeding south beneath a road bridge and a modern pedestrian bridge and it the past this branch would have serviced a collection of mills which are built surrounding a small harbour at end of the branch.
The main canal continues south-west before curving back around to continue south-east after passing beneath two recent concrete road bridges. The Canal at these points is narrowed by about two metres eliminating need for more complex structures.
Between these two bridges is second branch which follows a south-easterly route before re-entering the canal south of lock basin via a stone-lined channel.
The lock basin has limestone block lining with limestone coping blocks, timber lock gates and box. One set of gates has been removed and the flow of canal is now regulated by the remaining gate and sluice racks to north of lock basin. The canal then continues to south-east before splitting again with south-east branch passing under William O'Brien Bridge and into Claddagh Quay and second branch travelling roughly north-east before re-entering River Corrib (lower) after passing over stone-lined weir.

In general Dorset Street is an ugly street and many of the buildings are in poor condition but it still features many popular pubs.
The street runs north east from Abbey Street and Bolton Street at Dominick Street junction, north of Parnell Square and Mountjoy Square, and leads into Drumcondra Road at Binn's Bridge on the Royal Canal. It makes up part of the most common route from Dublin Airport to the city centre, and the R132 regional road follows Dorset Street for part of its route.[1] It meets the R135 route at the junctions with Blessington Street, location of the Blessington Street Basin, and St. Mary's Place; other major roads feeding onto this spine street include North Circular Road, Gardiner Street, Eccles Street, North Frederick Street, and Granby Row.
Physically the street rises up from the Liffey valley at its south western end, to its apex at roughly where it meets with Blessington and North Frederick Streets; proceeding north west the street slopes down again on the approach to Binn's Bridge at the Royal Canal.
Some early Georgian houses are dotted along the street, primarily identifiable by the stone Gibbsian door case entrances, and close to the crossroads with Blessington and North Frederick Streets.
Much of the street was redeveloped during the Victorian era, with a number of significant buildings built, such as the Gothic style stone-built Dominican priory, designed by J. L. Robinson in 1884–87 at the corner of Dominick Street, while across from it is the red brick Italianette former fire station, designed by C. J. McCarthy and completed in 1903. Much of the street consists of vernacular Victorian terraces, with shops opening straight onto footpaths at ground-floor level. During the latter part of the twentieth century, stretches of the street were again redeveloped by Dublin Corporation for social housing flat complexes near Dominick Street.

Missouri City's Fire & Rescue service regularly promotes safety with

As Missouri City families prepare to celebrate the holidays, the Fire & Rescue Service cautions residents to remember to put safety first in all of their plans.
In a recent report on Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings, the United States Fire Administration shared these startling statistics:
*An estimated 2,000 occur annually in the United States, resulting in an average of 5 deaths, 25 injuries, and $21 million in property loss.
*The leading cause is cooking and the fires occur most frequently in the afternoon hours from noon to 4 p.m.
*The smaller, confined fires account for about 71 percent of blazes, and larger, non-confined fires account for 29 percent of them.
*Smoke alarms were not present in 20 percent of non-confined Thanksgiving Day fires that occurred in occupied residential buildings
The comprehensive report compiled with data gathered from 2006 to 2008, can be viewed online at: www.usfa.fema.gov/statistics/.
"The welfare of citizens is our Number One priority and we're asking residents to keep these facts in mind when preparing for the upcoming holidays," said Fire Chief Russell Sander. "Our goal is to keep everyone healthy and happy."
Additionally, as residents and business owners around the City begin to deck their homes and companies with decorations, firefighters caution them to use safety measures to prevent fires.
Each year, officials record about 250 home fires involving Christmas trees, and another 170 involving holiday lights and other decorative lighting, according to USFA and the National Fire Protection Association. Combined, these fires cause about 20 deaths and 45 injuries.
Chief Sander reminds residents to follow these safety guidelines to keep their holidays accident-free:
*Check to make sure artificial trees are fire resistant.
*Place all trees away from fireplaces and other heat sources. Heated rooms dry trees out quickly; creating fire hazards.
*Be extremely cautious when using artificial snow sprays; they can irritate lungs if inhaled. To avoid injury, read container labels and follow directions carefully.
*Make sure that lights used indoors and outdoors have been tested for safety; labels should specify. Check each set, new and old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires or loose connections.
*Turn off all lights on trees and decorations when going to bed or leaving the house; a short could spark a fire.
*Keep matches, lighters and candles out of the reach of children.
*Avoid smoking near flammable decorations.
*Make an emergency plan to use if a fire breaks out and practice it with the entire family.
"Preventive measures help protect families," Sander said, "and we encourage all Missouri City residents to make wise choices to ensure they will enjoy the holiday season."

Our skilled artesians are adept at metal fabrication. The metals available for the frames on your water wall have been chosen for attractiveness, durability and ease of fabrication. The most common metals used are copper and stainless steel. The unique marbled or patina finish is applied to the copper of the indoor wall sculptures one piece at a time. A clear coating is then applied to the metal to give it a high gloss finish as well as to protect the copper from naturally developing a green patina over time. On some of our most recent water wall models we will even go further and apply custom artwork or custom patina shading to the metal making your wall sculpture a true piece of unique art.
