Feature photos on Flickr

A female stands in water grooming in the middle of a small flock. While the males get a lot more attention, I find the females have a lovely subtle plumage, and the fall reflections on the water framed the scene well.

A larger group spent several weeks on the Lake in the fall, spooked and flushed periodically by Hawks and the occasional Bald Eagle. The species is a frequent fall visitor, and there are occasional northbound migrants in the spring.

A feature of the species that always seems striking to my eye is the short, beautifully coloured bill. It is often described as ‘goose-like’ and it helps them have greater pulling force on the underwater greens that form the core of their diet.

Featured is the New York Falls taken from the Canadian side. A 6 seconds exposure with beams of light coming from Canada to light up the falls. The bridge is called the Rainbow Bridge which was lit a bit yellow/orange this time.

You can walk across this bridge for .50 cents and go into US/Canada. It opened in 1941.

The most striking feature that everyone most often sees on a Ring-necked Duck is the white ring on its beak and not the ring on its neck that gave its name. The cinnamon colored ring on the neck is not always visible and the sun has to shine in a particular angle to make it so. People sometime wonder why is it called Ring-necked when the ring is clearly on its beak. This photo was taken in 2014 when the entire marina was frozen solid except for one little area at the entrance of the dock which was kept ice free and the duck was actively feeding in the area. Last year's spring was so different to this year's in so many ways, it was a lot wetter hence the pond / lake here. It is not a permanent feature but I think it added to the scene. Thi was taken in an area known as The Dog Mills, Bride just north of Ramsey. This is looking south and if you look large you should be able to see Snaefell on the sky-line. Its the bit with two masts.
