QUICK MARCH !!!
TALL robust plovers with long yellow legs, usually in pairs or small parties of up to ten birds. Favors a variety of fresh and saline aquatic habitats. Difficult to get close to, and very entertaining in their behavior. Seen at Kotu, Banjul, Gambia.

REDSHANKS favor areas of undisturbed damp grassland, moors, and the margins of marshes. Utters a yelping tiu-uu alarm call, the song is musical and yodeling. Always a pure delight to capture these.

We saw 3 owls at the ball fields and one at the library, but none had a background or habitat that was pleasing. After driving around town for a while and looking at the vacant lots (of which there are far fewer due to the building boom) we found this cutie that had a nice nest and surroundings.

Le Geai des chênes est un oiseau commun qu'on entend plus facilement qu'on ne voit. Ses cris éraillés sonores sont désagréables à l'oreille humaine et il n'en est pas avare. Il est assez farouche vis à vis de l'homme et préfère garder ses distances.
Ce n'est pas pour rien qu'on l'appelle Geai des chênes car il est friand de glands qui constituent près de 50% de son alimentation en été puis qu'il cache en automne pour l'hiver.
Ces oiseaux ont une excellente mémoire visuelle et sont capables de retrouver leur nourriture même sous la neige...

The Eurasian Jay is a common bird that can be heard more easily than seen. His loud hoarse cries are unpleasant to human ears and he is not stingy with them. He is quite fierce towards humans and prefers to keep his distance.
It is not for nothing that it is called Jay of the oaks because it is fond of acorns which constitute nearly 50% of its diet in summer then that it hides in autumn for the winter.
These birds have an excellent visual memory and are able to find their food even under the snow ...

During August and September, we observed 4 juvenile Piping Plovers in the same general area of the beach. They were usually in the tire tracks or up in the dunes on the dry sand. Nice images but I prefer my shorebirds in the surf or on the wet sand. It was late in the afternoon with about 90 minutes of light left when we came upon our 4 friends. Were where they? In the tire tracks of course. We had to make a decision. Do we wait and hope that the birds move to the water or continue on our way and hope to find something else to work with. We decided to give them 15 minutes. Boy am I glad we waited. They did indeed head to the water and were outrageously cooperative. They made up for all the hours we patiently waited over the summer. We took tons of images but this was my favorite.

Je me rends compte que les photos prises dans des refuges ou lors de démonstrations ne semblent pas plaire autant que celles captées dans la nature. Mais c'est une réalité pour moi que la pratique apporte le succès et les opportunités sont incontrôlables en nature. Pour moi, la photographie de nature est avant la photographie et un passe-temps. J'apprécie autant une superbe photographie prise en milieu sauvage que celles prises lors d'un safari Africain organisé par des agences et des guides ou dans des Resorts exotiques sous les tropiques où les oiseaux sont attirés à des mangeoires ou celles prises lors d'une démonstration de rapaces comme la série précédente que j'ai affiché. C'est à force d'essais et d'erreurs avec un appareil photo que nous devenons intimes avec lui et qu'il devient une extension de nous-mêmes.
Cela étant dit, voici les 2 premiers clichés d'une série de 30 images consécutives que j'ai capturées d'une chouette lapone en toute fin de journée. Avec très faible luminosité et couverture nuageuse. Sans la pratique et une connaissance approfondie de mon appareil photo, je n'aurais jamais réussi. La Chouette lapone a fait trois attaques et j'en ai capturé deux. A noter que je ne nourris pas et que cette chouette n'était pas nourrie... J'étais avec un ami de longue date et d'autres photographes passionnés lorsque cette rencontre dans un milieu complètement naturel. Pour moi, voir ce magnifique oiseau chasser au crépuscule à la toute fin d'une froide journée de février, est tout simplement inoubliable. Ces photos ne sont pas de qualité supérieure et ont été traitées avec Topaz DeNoise afin d'être présentables. Mon intention n'était pas de les publier dans mon photostream public, mais ils représentent très bien le point que je voulais faire valoir, la pratique est gage de succès.

I realize that the photos taken in shelters or during demonstrations do not seem to please as much as those captured in nature. But it is a reality for me that practice brings success and opportunities are uncontrollable in nature. For me nature photography is before photography and a hobby. I appreciate as much a superb photograph taken in a wild environment as those captured during an African safari organized by agencies and guides or in exotic Resorts in the tropics where the birds are attracted to the feeders or those taken in a demonstration of birds of prey as far as mentioned. It's through lots of trial and error with a camera that we become intimate with it and it becomes an extension of ourselves.
That being said, here are the first 2 shots of a series of 30 consecutive images that I captured of a Great Gray Owl at the very end of the day. With very low luminosity and cloud cover. Without practice and a thorough knowledge of my camera, I would never have succeeded. The GGO made three attacks and I captured two. Note that I do not feed and that this owl was not fed... I was with a long-time friend and others enthusiasts photographer when that encounter in a completely natural environment was extraordinary for me, seeing this magnificent bird hunt at dusk at the end of a cold February day, is simply unforgettable. These photos are not top quality and have been treated with Topaz DeNoise in order to be presentable. My intention was not to post them in my public photostream, but they represent very well the point I wanted to make, practice is the secret of success.

Tras ver los cauces de los ríos secos por la fuerte seguía que invade este verano, me sorprendo al ver la cantidad de basura que se acumula en las orillas.
Desde el nacimiento de los ríos, siempre bebo del agua que mana de las montañas. Pero cuando pasa por una civilización, el olor característico a aguas contaminadas inunda su presencia.
Afortunadamente, la naturaleza se encarga de purificarlas mientras se deslizan por las rocas, pero llega un momento que en los embalses se acumula tanta basura, que es imposible purificar.
Solo queda una cosa por hacer, si no hubiera acumulaciones de basura, la vida estaría mas florecida.
No creen que es mas bonito ver un río donde poder ver animales, tantos que todos los días se les puede ver, que ver únicamente basura?
Pues deja de contaminar las aguas por las que bebes cada día, y coloca la basura donde debe estar. En el basurero.
Los operarios saben lo que deben hacer. La naturaleza no sabe qué hacer con esta basura de los ríos.
Se fier à l'heure qu'elle donne est le meilleur moyen de ne pas arriver à temps à un rendez-vous...:-)

Magnifique escapade de fin d'été dans la péninsule Acadienne et la Gaspésie. J'ai repris la photographie et Monique et moi étions plus que dus pour retourner en Gaspésie après plus de 42 ans! J'y ai fait quelque belle rencontre d'oiseau rare comme Jean Blais un gars fort sympathique. Je vais vous présenter dans le désordre comme c'est mon habitude les prises que j'ai retenues.
Le matin du 8 septembre il y avait un grand vent du nord et la marée haute était prévue pour 12h30 à Kamouraska et c'était très nuageux, c'est un endroit que j'affectionne pour sa poissonnerie et les superbes paysages et bâtiments. Après avoir repéré un groupe de Pluviers argenté et étudié leurs déplacements, je m'étais installé derrière une pierre du rivage à plusieurs centaines de pieds d'eux dans l'espoir d'essayer de capturer les pluviers argentés qui sont plutôt farouches mais qui effectuaient une remontée du rivage vers moi. J'y étais depuis plus d'une heure et j'étais trempé et complètement gelé d'être couché au sol patiemment sur le gravier et les algues détrempés. C'est alors qu'un faucon Pèlerin est arrivé en rase motte et a fait fuir le groupe Pluvier argenté tant attendu... J'avais bien fait quelques prises mais j'espérais une prise plein cadre. C'est alors qu'arriva un oiseau inattendu et qui a sauvé mon avant-midi, Un courlis corlieu. Il était encore loin mais par chance il travaillait le rivage en mangeant lentement vers moi. C'est un magnifique oiseau mais plutôt méfiant et farouche. J'ai bien fait une centaine de prises avant de décider que j'en avais assez de geler et de retourner au VR ouo Monique m'attendait patiemment.

Beautiful late summer getaway in the Acadian Peninsula New Brunswick and Gaspésia. I got back into photography and Monique and I were more than happy to return to Gaspésia after more than 42 years! I made some nice encounter of rare bird like Jean Blais a very nice guy. I will present you in disorder as it is my habit the shots that I love.
On the morning of September 8th there was a strong north wind and the high tide was scheduled for 12:30 in Kamouraska Quebec and it was very cloudy, it is a place I love for its fish market and the beautiful landscapes and buildings of the old town. After spotting a group of Black-bellied Plovers and studying their movements, I settled behind a shore stone several hundred feet away from them in the hope of trying to capture the Black-bellied Plovers who are rather shy, but were working the shore towards me. I had been there for over an hour and was soaking wet and completely frozen from lying on the ground on the gravel and sodden algae. It was then that a Peregrine Falcon arrived on a low ground swep and chased away the long-awaited Black-bellied Plovers group ... I had made a few catches but I was hoping for a full frame that never happened.
Then came an unexpected bird and saved my morning, A Whimbrel. He was still far away but luckily he was working the shore slowly eating towards me. It is a beautiful bird but rather suspicious and fierce. I did a good hundred shots before I decided I was tired of freezing and went back to the RV where Monique was waiting for me patiently.
